I have just witnessed a bombardment by Japanese forces against Chinese forces in a Base hex Level 9 fort. The odds report went like this (4012 Japanese) to (1550 Chinese)
What am I seeing here if I assault now will my Japanese forces have the same Odds

no.

during bombardments you are simply seeing the unadjusted or "basic" assault values of the two sides.

During combat...the basic assault values are adjusted based on a myriad of factors and you receive an "adusted assault value"

If, for example, you attack and have not prepped your LCU's for the target base....your adjusted assault value could be an eighth of what the basic assault value is.

Huh? Can you explain that? I thought prepping a unit enhanced it's assault value.

Yes Nik, please to elaborate. I thought prep points only helped your AV. You're saying that few or no prep points directly fractions your AV?

I understand that lack of prep points during an invasion will increas disruption and disablements, thus lowering the AV.

But are you saying that an LCU attacking a other in a ground battle (say in China, not an amphib invasion), with low or zero prep, actually has it's AV -REDUCED- because of the low prep?

Perhaps a better way to explain it is that Preperation points can both enhance your ultimate AV...(the adjusted Assault value that is spit out when LCU combat is resolved) or ensure that the adjusted AV at least is not degraded too much.

Example: Japan LCU has a base AV of 500 points. Japan player decides to attack Rangoon but the LCU has 0 preperation points for Rangoon. Combat might go something like this "AV wise"

Base Assault value = 500
Maximum assault value =550 (based on variables...leader rolls, exp and morale...fatigue and disruption etc)

*Adjusted Assault value* =40 (again factoring in the above but also including terrain modifyers and preperation point for the target....here is where prep points are vitally important...because no prep for Rangoon....the adjusted assault value was badly degraded to a fraction of what it potentially could be.)

Preperation points in general on the attack tend to help ensure that the attacker assault values don't get degraded much. defender preperation points tend to get a boosted AV (above the base AV) because in addition to prep points they can also benefit from terrain defense factors such as urban bonus so, to use a typical example again (hypothetical)

Defender prep for Rangoon = 0

Base assault value = 200
Max assault value = 240
Adjusted assault value = 130

Give that same unit 100 prep for the target base being defended, you may see it as:

Base assault value = 200
Max assault value = 240
Adjusted assault value = 500

(If the above happened in combination with a 0 prep attack listed above...for sure you'd get a 0:1 modified odds result)

In the end it's the adjusted assault value that counts.....base assault values can be misleading since they can be enhanced....left around the same or badly degraded.

This is why in general preperation points benefit the defender more than the attacker because defenders can combine prep point modifyers with defensive terrain bonus factors to seriously boost their adjusted AV. (or in other words....two units with the same level of prep for a base....the defender has an advantage unless mitigated by other factors such as disablements or high disruption (due to bombardments and/or previous assaults or due to lack of supply)
