I have dabbled with the uniforms. I have found that if I try to edit the colors, the shadow and detail of the item disappears, like on the pants, the shadding where the thigh pads are located. How do you overcome that issue?

if your paint program supports layers
you add a layer with the color you want and then turn it into a muliply layer

it's usually a drop down list next to the layer
in paintshop pro or photoshop and I think gimp is the same too

Or, if you dont have a program that supports layers (aka, you're stuck using MSPaint), just download a uniform that uses the same color pants and/or helmet that you need. Between the game defaults and the various uniforms on fbmax.com, I dont think there's very many un-used colors.

Everything else can be done without layers. The pant stripes dont need any texture layer on them, and neither do the jerseys. The ones included with the game dont have any and they still look ok. Not quite as good as some that have them obviously, but not that bad either.

Layers do make it a lot easier but it's not impossible to work without them.

This an example of the U3 file. This one has some texture on it.. but, like I said, it's not necessary. The red areas are the side panels.

Actually the jerseys that come with the game are textured, but it's a different texture...more of a mesh-like. I like the ones like the above picture better.

You're half right. The ones it throws in the folder when you create a team are textured. The ones that are part of all the initial default leagues are not.

One more question, sorry for being such a pain...

Ok, I see where the stripes go under the arms on jerseys.

Can someone show me the areas on the rest of the parts, shoulders, sleves, pants, ect where different graphics can be placed or a different color?

Ktulu is giving you alot of good information and his uniforms are great. Thought I would try to help answer your last question by showing some of the things I do. I use Paint Shop Pro so I use layers. It lets you create templates with many layers with many effects that you can turn off or use as you want. My jersey and shoulder templates have many layers that I have added, below is an example of some. Just showing you this so that you can see that basicly let you imagination run wild, you can pretty much put anything anywhere you want! The only limitation I have found is how the game applies the skins to the figures in the game, some areas get distorted so its a pain trying to place any type of line or graphic in certain areas.

I would say, look at the screenshots of the uniforms people have done. If you find one that has something you want to do, download that uniform and see how it was done. Otherwise, trial and werror goes a long way as well.

Also make sure you have the uniform viewers (available at FBMax) so you can see things as they progress. The viewer doesn't show the numbers but it shows everything else.

`Definately having the viewer helps . For the first month I had the game , I did`nt know where and how to use it . So as i made uniforms i had to keep turning game on and playing quick games to see how uniform looked . If your so so at making uniforms , it helped to mix and match if you see things others have done . Just have to hope you find the right shoulders and other parts in colors you want or your frankenstein monster , look bad . Umm great name or scheme for a team .

I made a template for myself that overlayed a colored grid on each component of the uniform. The scales of the individual uni parts are different (one pixel wide on the pants does not equal one pixel on the shirt - very unfortunate) so I then added some additional lines to help sort things out. The green line on the pants lines up with the green line on the shirt, there's a purple arrow where the shoulder bmp overlays the rest of the shirt, etc. The look pretty goofy but they do get the job done.

It might just be more confusing but if anyone is interested, I can posted them.

I have tried the advice of downloading a uniform to check out what was done and I am still not getting it. I understand the concept of layers but can't seem to get them to work right.

I have downloaded the Edmonton Eskimos uniform to play with. I load the U3.bmp for the jersey. I would like to remove the Eskimos from the uniform but I don't see any layer that contains just that. I can color over the logo but then all the texture is lost for that area.

What is it that I am not seeing or understanding????

Not all software uses layers, if the graphic program your using doesnt use layers then you cant see the individual layers. Which brings up something else, when the uniforms are created and saved for the game they are saved as BMP files, which are single layer files. So even if someone creates a jersey u3 file with say 10 layers, when they save it as u3.BMP for the game, it is reduced to one layer. You can use a uniform that came with the game or one that someone created to see where items are located on the files, but you cant make changes to layers. Your better off using a graphic program that uses layers, and use the templates to create uniforms. I think in another thread someone mentioned a program that uses layers that is a free download.

So, to use layers, do we then have to save the templates first into a format that uses layers such as JPEG or GIF??

Not totally sure what your asking but here is an answer. When you create a new uniform using the templates, to keep the layers as a work in progress you have to save the file in a format that allows layers, sorry Im not sure which files allow layers beyond the ones I use with Paint Shop Pro. Once the file is saved into a format that does not allow layers, such as BMP, you then only have one layer and cant open the layers that the original file might have had. So when you download uniforms made by someone, those uniform files are saved as BMP files, so are now one layer, so even using Paint Shop Pro or another graphic program that uses layers, you cant open up the layers that the person used to make the bmp file. However you could open the file and using a program that uses layers, add layers to the bmp file. For example if you downloaded the colored uniform pieces or helmets that you can find on FBmax, you could use layers to add logos, lines, etc. to them. Then when you are done you could save it as a bmp file, which would then merge the layers.

Hope I didnt confuse you more, maybe someone that has more knowledge/experience can add something.
