1957 Update - August 1st, 7 days until the trade deadline (Now using Beta 3)

The Pirates are currently sitting 3.5 games behind the NL leading Cardinals with a 60-43 record. The Reds are starting to fade, and are 9 games out of first. In the last two months of the season, the Pirates play the Cardinals only 4 more times (8/27, 8/28, 9/15 Doubleheader) . Those are going to be 4 very important games!

The AL race is crazy as well. The Yankees have a 1 game lead on the Indians, a 2.5 lead on both the Red Sox and White Sox, and a 9.5 game lead on the Tigers.

The Pirates aren't actively looking to trade this week, unless something interesting is proposed by another team. The Pirates are also seriously considering calling up 21 year old SP Draftee Dick Drott. In AAA this year, Dick is 9-2 with a 2.04 ERA. He's K'd 104 while walking only 54.

Ok, the Pirates did end up promoting Drott. He will take Friends spot in the rotation. Could this be the pitching spark the Pirates needed or will Drott wither under the pressure of the big leagues?

1957 Update - August 10th

The trade deadline passes without any action for the Pirates, but Early Wynn, the Pirates #2 starter has gone down with a moderate arm injury, and will be out of action for 2 weeks. Taking his place will be veteran pitcher Bob Friend, who only recently moved to the bullpen to make room for Drott.

Oh, almost forgot, the Pirates are now at 66-44 and TIED FOR FIRST in the NL!!! Let's hope the loss of Wynn doesn't hurt the team too much....

1957 Update - August 21st

Things are going all the Pirates way this month. The Bucs are winning, the Cards are losing, and the Pirates now have a 75-47 record and a huge 6 game lead in the NL.

Wynn's injury didn't slow the Pirates down, and the rookie Dick Drott is doing a great job posting a 2-1 record and a 3.18 ERA in 4 August starts.

With Wynn feeling better and back in the rotation, the Pirates are looking to pull ahead in the final weeks.

Over in the AL, the White Sox have pulled away a bit and have a 1.5 game lead over the Yankees and Indians.

1957 Update - August 30th

Drama in Steel Town!!! After losing 2 games to the Cardinals, the Pirates now find themselves only 3.5 games up on the Redbirds. To make matters worse, Pittsburgh slugger Stan Musial sustained a serious ankle injury and will be out for at least 2 weeks. Musial was batting .320 with 19 homers before he was injured. Roberto Clemente has been called up from the minors to add another bat to the bench, and Dale Long will take over the job at 1st base.

Gonna be an interesting September!

1957 Update - September 13th

Well, the Pirates wanted excitement and they got it. With only 11 games to go in the season, the Pirates hold a slim 2 game lead over the Cardinals. In the AL, the Red Sox hold a half game lead over the White Sox, with the Indians only 2.5 back.

The Pirates will play the Cubs once, the Cardinals twice, the Reds twice, the Dodgers once, and the Giants 5 times to end the season. Stan Musial will be back for the final 10 games.

Here we go...

1957 Update - September 15th, Doubleheader with the Cardinals

With only 3.5 games seperating the two teams, this double header in St. Louis is huge...

Game 1: In his 4th complete game of the season, Frank Lary (10-9, 3.94 ERA) held the Cardinals to 5 hits and 2 runs on route to a 5-2 Pirates victory!

Game 2: Dick Drott gives up 5 runs and falls to 2-2 since being called up from AAA, as the Cardinals take one back from the Bucs, 7 to 6.

It's now September 16th, the Pirates have a 3.5 game lead in the NL, and the Red Sox have a 2 game lead in the AL

Goodman follows with a single and the Boston threat continues. There is a meeting on the mound, but the manager decides to keep Drott in the game to face Virdon who is hitless in two at-bats. The decision pays off, as Drott strikes out Virdon on 3 pitches to end the inning.

6TH INNING - Ted Williams walked to open the Sox 6th. Kaline singled and the Sox are once again threatening. Drott has thrown 108 pitches so the Pirates decide to pull him out after one heck of a gutsy performance. The Pirates bring in Friend to face Zauchin. Zauchin flies out. Klaus pops out. Goodman bats for Boston with two outs. The 0-2 pitch is grounded to Maz at second and the game is over!!!! Pirates win again!!!

Player of the Game: Dick Drott. His pitching and his ability to work out of jams was the story of the game.

1957 World Series - Game 3 (Pirates lead series 2 games to 0)

Early Wynn (13-9, 3.64) vs. Tom Brewer (9-6, 3.58)

** The Pirates through 37 year old Wynn on the mound. Can he match the performance put in by 21 year old Drott?

Game Summary:
1ST INNING - Robinson and Musial both walk to start the game. Eddie Mathews comes up and hits a BLAST TO LEFT, it's outta here!!! Pirates up quickly, (3-0).

1ST INNING - With the bases empty, Virdon hits a solo shot to center. (3-1)

2ND INNING - With one out, Thomas walks, Wynn hits a single, and Robinson walks to load the bases for Mathews. Mathews is unable to copy his first inning performance and grounds into a DP.

4TH INNING - Tom Brewer is pitching ok, put the Red Sox bring in Bill Henry anyway.

5TH INNING - With one out and nobody on Eddie Mathews goes yard for the second time in the game!!! (4-1)

5TH INNING - Early Wynn is pitching a heck of a game, only allowing 3 hits and 1 run through 5 innings of work. The Pirates will let him bat in the 6th so he can go another inning or maybe more.

6TH INNING - Hurd comes in for the Red Sox to face Robinson with 2 outs and nobody on base. Robinson smacks a triple to right center. Musial hits a single up the middle for another RBI. (5-1) McMahan is brought in for Hurd and gets Mathews to ground out.

6TH INNING - Wynn gives up his second solo shot of the day, this time to Goodman. (5-2) Following a Virdon strike out, Ted Williams goes yard!!! It's now (5-3). Yet the Pirates leave in the crafty Wynn to face Kaline. Kaline doubles and Wynn is sent to the showers. Littlefield comes in to face Zauchin with 1 out and a runner on second. Zauchin singles and Kaline scores. It's now (5-4). Klaus lines out, but with 2 outs, Hal Smith hits a 380 foot blast over the wall in left to put the Red Sox on top!!!!! (5-6) Ben Wade is sent in to relieve Littlefield and gets Malzone to fly out. But the damage is done and the Red Sox are ahead!

7TH INNING - Bill Virdon goes deep for the second time in the game and gives the Red Sox a 2 run lead! (5-7). Kaline and Williams both reach base and Wade is done for the day. King is brought in to stop the bleeding and gets Zauchin to strike out.

8TH INNING - Leo Keily comes in to pitch for the Sox. With Frank Thomas on first and one out, Clemente is asked to pinch hit for the pitcher. Clemente grounds into a fielders choice and sits on first with two outs and Robinson coming to the plate. Robinson walked to bring Musial up. Musial hit the ball deep to right and it bounces off the wall for a double!!!!! The two runs score and we are all knotted up at 7!!!! (7-7) Eddie Mathews is intentionally walked. Burgess flies out and the inning is over. Wow, what a game!!!

8TH INNING - Friend comes in to pitch the 8th for Pittsburgh, and Miksis comes in to pinch hit and immediately smacks a single. Stephens comes in to pinch hit and flies out to center. Miksis steals second even though Pittsburgh had called for a pitch out. Malzone is K'd by Friend for out number 2. Now Eddie Robinson comes in to pinch hit. He flies out to left so we go to the ninth inning all tied at 7!!!!

9TH INNING - Brodowski comes in to pitch for the Sox. The 1-1 to Mazeroski is a breaking ball that hangs over the middle third, OH - HE GOT ALL OF THAT ONE!!! IT'S GONE!! Mazeroski has hit a HR in the 9th inning to give the Pirates the lead!!!! (8-7) The home crowd has been stunned into silence!!! Now that's why I traded for him!!! YEE-HA!!!!!!!! With two outs, the Pirates have men on second and third with Robinson coming to the plate. The Red Sox bring in Morrie Martin. They decide to walk Robinson to load up the bases and face Stan Musial. The 0-0 pitch to Musial is grounded up the middle for the out and the Red Sox escape any more damage in the 9th.

9TH INNING - The Pirates now put their faith into closer Roy Face. First up is Goodman. Strike 3!!! Second up is Virdon who attempts to bunt for a hit but grounds out. 2 outs, bottom of the 9th and down by 1 run. Up strides Ted Williams. (This is where this game needs a single pitch mode!!!) Ted waits on a 2-0 fastball and knocks it straight back up the middle for a single. The Red Sox are still alive. The Pirates protect the lines as Kaline steps to the plate. Kaline works the count to 3-2... Here's the pitch... hit to the left side... the SS has it... throws to first... GAME OVER!!! Pirates win!!! Pirates Win!!! They now have a 3 game lead in the series and can wrap it up tomorrow!!!

Player of the Game: Bill "Maz" Mazeroski. Almost, but not quite as dramatic as real life... Still - pretty damn cool!!!!

6TH INNING - Robinson makes an error, and Klaus reaches first to start the inning. Hal Smith singled to the left side, and that will do it for Lary. Littlefield comes on in relief and Malzone CRUSHES the ball to deep left center, giving the Red Sox the lead, (4-5). Littlefield gives up a couple more hits and then Ted Williams steps to the plate. BOOM!!!! Another 3 run homer for the Red Sox, and they are now up by 4!!! (4-8) Littlefield is yanked for Jim Bunning who gets the next two outs.

8TH INNING - Not paying close enough attention, the Pirates manager leaves Jim Bunning in the game to hit for himself. The 0-2 pitch is hit DEEP AND FAR.... THAT BALL IS OUTTA HERE!! A solo shot for Jim Bunning pulls the Pirates to within 3!! (5-8) Brodowski comes in to pitch as McMahan is boo'ed off the field... Frank Robinson is up and BOOM!!! OH MY!!! BACK TO BACK HOMERS FOR THE PIRATES!!! They now only trail by 2!!!! (6-8) Musial grounds out, but Mathews walks, bringing the tying run to the plate! Burgess flies out for the second out. Up strides Maz, can he be the hero again??? Nope, he strikes out... double crud...

8TH INNING - With only one out and two men on base, Bunning is pulled for Bob Friend. Friend gets Kaline to line out and Zauchin to ground out.

9TH INNING - The Pirates last chance at a sweep. They need two runs... Paul LaPalme comes in to close out the game for the Red Sox. Bob Skinner opens the frame with a single, and the drama in this game continues!!! Groat is due up, but the Pirates send up Roberto Clemente as a pinch hitter. Clemente grounds into a double play and the Pirates are down to their last out with Thomas up. The 0-0 pitch is hit into right for a single and Dale Long comes in to pinch hit for the pitcher. Long is struck out and the Red Sox avoid the sweep!!!

Player of the Game: Ted Williams' HR proved to be the difference in the game.

1957 World Series - Game 5 (Pirates lead series 3 games to 1)
It's 45 degrees in Boston and the wind is gusting out to right...

Vern Law (1-0, 1.42) vs. Vinegar Bend Mizell (0-1, 6.75)

Game Summary:
1ST INNING - The Pirates come out of their corner swinging in the first inning!! Following a Thomas single, and a Temple walk, Stan Musial hits a shot over the left field wall to give the Pirates an early 3-0 lead in the 1st. Then, with 2 outs, Skinner singled and Mathews doubled him in. (4-0) Dick Groat followed with a single and the Pirates were up 5-0 before all of the Boston fans had taken their seats! (5-0)

1ST INNING - The Red Sox get their bats going in the first as well as Kaline knock in Goodman for their first run. Klaus then hit a SAC fly to score Williams (5-2) With the bases loaded Law walked Malzone to score Kaline (5-3), but was able to get Mizell to fly out to end the inning.

2ND INNING - The Red Sox put another run on the board as Kaline grounds out, but scores Goodman from third (5-4)

3RD INNING - What a crazy turnaround. Just when it seemed like the Pirates were on their way to winning the series, the Red Sox put up 3 more runs in the 3rd on a home run by THE PITCHER!!! Vinegar takes advantage of the wind to right and hits a 3 run dinger to put the Red Sox up. (5-7) Goodman doubles and the Pirates put Ron Kline in to pitch. Kline proceeds to walk Virdon and Williams to load the bases. Kaline gets a single and an RBI (5-9)

4TH INNING - Are the Sox going to score in every inning??? Virdon hits a triple that knock in 2 more runs for the home team. (5-11)

5TH INNING - Hope you like offense. The Pirates Eddie Mathews hits a 480 foot bomb to straight away center to put another run on the board (6-11) Groat then followed up with a homer of his own, pulling the Pirates to within 4. (7-11) Bill Henry came in to pitch for the Sox following the back to back homers.

5TH INNING - Nellie King came in to pitch for the Pirates and gave up a double to Kaline. He then walked Zuachin and gave up a walk to Klaus to load the bases. Smith flied out, but Kaline tagged up and scored. The Sox have now scored in 5 consecutive innings.

6TH INNING - This is nuts... With 2 on and 1 out, Frank Robinson hit a HR to center to bring the Pirates to within 2 runs! (10-12) Henry was then lifted for McMahan. Skinner and Mathews then singled, knocking McMahan out of the game, and bringing in Kiely. Groat lined out to center, and Virdon threw out Skinner trying to score from 3rd.

6TH INNING - Yup, more runs for Boston!!! Virdon hits a 2 run shot to extend the Boston lead yet again. (10-14) Then Ted Williams knocks one out on the next pitch! What in the wide, wide world of sports is going on here???? (10-15)

7TH INNING - Morrie Martin comes in to pitch to the Pirates in the 7th, and the Pirates go quietly.

7TH INNING - Ben Wade comes in to pitch for the Pirates, and gives up a 2 out double to Malzone. Morrie Martin bats for himself so the Pirates look forward to a scoreless inning. Sigh... Martin doubles down the line scoring Malzone. (10-16) Un-freakin-believable

8TH INNING - Stan Musial opens the inning with another solo shot. (11-16)

8TH INNING - THE RED SOX GO 1-2-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9TH INNING - I fully expect the Pirates to come back and tie this game up after everything that has happened. Mathews walks, and Brodowski is brought in to pitch. Groat fouls out. Maz fouls out. Thomas flies out and the game is over. Final 11-16.

Wow, that was something... 35 hits, 27 runs, 5 HR's for the Pirates (2 for Musial), 3 HR's for the Red Sox. Only one error.

Player of the Game: Bill Virdon. 3 for 5 with a HR, Triple, and 4 RBI

Eeek.... This series ain't over yet folks!!!!

For those following along at home - that 11-16 scoreline is as rare in the beta as it is in real life: i've managed almost 200 games in the beta, now, calling all the shots on both offense and defense, and have never seen such a line!

Yeah, but this was at Fenway in the 1950s. A definite hitters' park, wasn't it? I haven't played in it yet -- I do in-game managing in the NL parks of that time.

Yep, it was at Fenway and the wind was blowing 17 MPH to right.... Just an absolute crazy game. Glad to be taking the Pirates back to Pittsburgh for game 6!!!

1957 World Series - Game 6 (Pirates lead series 3 games to 2)
It's 44 degrees in Pittsburgh and the wind is gusting out to center at 10MPH... Wonder what affect the wind will have today!!

Frank Sullivan (0-1, 5.06) vs. Dick Drott (1-0, 3.18)

Game Summary:
1ST INNING - Uneventful, for a change!!

2ND INNING - Uneventful... this is weird given all the other occurances of the series so far!

3RD INNING - Malzone doubles for the Sox, but is thrown out tagging on a fly out by Moss. Each team has one hit through 3 innings.

4TH INNING - Finally some offense for the Pirates as Burgess, Mazeroski and Skinner all single to load the bases with only one out. With the infield in, Groat singles to right center and the Pirates plate 2 to take the lead! (0-2) Thomas follows with the 5th straight single of the inning, but Skinner is thrown out at home. (Note to Shaun: The PbP just read "runner out trying to take extra base" Maybe it could be more dramatic for a play at home?) Drott is then the 6th straight Pirate to reach base as Goodman makes an error at second and the bases are loaded for Frank Robinson who strikes out to end the threat.

5TH INNING - Nada, Pirates still up by 2.

6TH INNING - Goodman triples to left to start the Sox 6th. Kaline grounds to short with the infield in and Goodman has to hold. Same thing happens to Zauchin and the infield moves back with 2 out. Stephens grounds out and the Sox are still scoreless through six. The 21 year old Drott is doing great!

7TH INNING - Finally some excitement for the Red Sox. With two outs, the Red Sox have Ted Williams on second and Malzone on third. Bill Virdon coming to the plate. Drott has already thrown 93 pitches, so there is a meeting on the mound to discuss options. Finally, the Pirates decide to leave Drott in the game, intentionally walk Virdon, and pitch to Goodman. The move backfires as Goodman singles driving in a run for the Red Sox. (1-2) With the bases still loaded and 2 out in the 7th, Drott is taken out for Bob Friend who will face Kaline. Friends first pitch is smacked to right for a single, and game six is tied at 2!!!! Friend stays in the game to face Zauchin, and Zauchin draws a 4 pitch walk!!!! Friend is taken out of the game to a chorus of boos!!!! Littlefield is brought in to face Stephens. Stephens singles to right and another run scores!!!! It's now 4-2 Red Sox. Littlefield strikes out Hal Smith and the inning is finally over. The Pirates fans are stunned... (4-2)

7TH INNING - Kiely comes in to pitch for Boston in the bottom of the 7th, and the Pirates go down 1-2-3.

8TH INNING - Jim Bunning comes in to pitch the 8th for Pittsburgh and does well.

8TH INNING - Jack McMahan pitches for the Red Sox in the 8th. The Pirates go down in order again.

9TH INNING - After 2 Boston singles with 1 out, Face is brought in to pitch for the Pirates. He gets Stephens to fly out, and Smith to ground out.

9TH INNING - Can the Pirates come back or will we have a game 7????? Paul LaPalme comes in to close the game for Boston. Mazeroski singles the 0-2 pitch to right! Skinner walks to the plate as the tying run! Skinner flies out to center and Maz has to hold at first. Next up is Groat. Oh No!!!! Groat grounds into the 4-6-3 DP and the game is OVER!!!!!

Gentlemen, we are going to have a GAME 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Player of the Game: Frank Sullivan - 6 innings pitched, 2 earned runs, 4 K's, 1 BB

Oh no! Is it too late to log a bug? Clearly Shaun left the "if ((team == BostonRedSox) and (down by three in a seven-game series)), make a miraculous comeback" in from 2005.

Good luck in Game 7 - going with Wynn again?

Will he have the dominance of his first five innings from Game 3, or will he melt down like he did in the sixth?

Yep, going to go with Wynn again... and I'm hoping that Mazeroski can provide some much needed magic as well! I hope to play the game tonight...

Shaun already told me that he's rooting for the Red Sox, and the series has been run with multiple versions of the Beta and Release Candidate... I can just see him making little tweaks to the code as we go along just to give the Sox a little boost.

Hey Sullivan, if the Pirates blow the 3-0 series lead, I'm blaming you!!!!!

It would only be appropriate if Mazeroski hits the game-winning HR in the bottom of the ninth. I'm crossing my fingers.

Hey, Al, you wouldn't be accusing Shaun of "loading the dice", now would ya?

One more thing -- I'd love to see a webcast of game 7 -- now THAT would be so cool.

poor PadresFan is going to have to give us the complete play-by-play, as he's playing it out.

Hey, I've got no problem doing something like that, makes it a hell of a lot more fun for me if I know others are reading.... I'll probably just do inning by inning posts... That way, someone who reads the thread days later can still simulate the drama by stepping through each message one at a time...

That's good for me -- inning-by-inning will provide plenty of drama -- what's the Vegas odds on game 7? Pittsburgh's at home, and a home field advantage does exist, right?

My best guess is 5-2 odds in the Pirates favor. What's the pitching matchup?

The Pirates have announced Early Wynn as their starter, but the 'Sox manager is playing coy...

PadresFan, what time is your broadcast going to start? I'm tuning in!

OK -- I'm tuning in some good rockabilly & blues on the short-wave -- the black stations have some Muddy Waters stuff -- on another station I heard Cash's "Walk the Line". The cooler is stocked, and I'm getting stoked.
