Well that should teach the US submariners not to engage above the surface

Armed merchant ships should fire back but i also question wether the semi civilians onboard could actually hit anything with their popguns. And it is not like a subcaptain would just surface, stop and wait 15 minutes so that the merchants could take aim before proceding. A drilled sub crew would probably hit the target several times before the crew on a merchant ship could even get their popguns in the right direction. But who knows perhaps the subcaptain had not drilled his crew in the use of the secondary armaments and thus several men fell overboard and someone creamed a sodacan into the breach!

(Yes i know, sodacans where not standard equipment in US armed forces until after the nam war)

Actually, I usually pray for that. Whatever wonderous math the game system is using, it seems to improve the sink rate dramatically. You score 2 torp hits and an AK will probably survive. But score 2 torp hits and 3 hits with the deck gun and down she goes. While I dont see how 3 5" holes in the side can dramatically contribute to sinking a ship, but it works.

Actually, in another thread here there was a discussion of Coca-cola creating the canned version in response to a WW2 military request...

Realy? Well would not surprise me, having served with US armed personel I can say that they have more chips and drinks than granades and ammo in their combat webbing.
