I have a question that I was wondering if anyone could answer.

I'd like to bombard a Japanese held base (Bali) with ships stationed in Kopang. I'd like to head south into the Indian Ocean, swing west to within six hexes, and then have my ships run in at night and bombard. I'd like to use the vastness of the Indian Ocean to help conceal my movements and to help keep Bettys from discovering them. The problems lies with their retirement. Because of the way the game is set-up, I can't set my ships to run due south back into the Indian Ocean. Instead, after bombarding, they will head directly back toward their homeport of Kopang, passing all the Lesser Sunda Islands, which will keep them closer to Betty range from other Jap held bases.

Is there a way to keep them from retiring due east towards Kopang, and instead have them travel due south into the expanses of the Indian Ocean? As the game now stands, it would have been nice is if it allowed one to set-up rendevous points whereever one wanted, instead of always having to set a port as a destination.

Thanks.

You can always set a mid-ocean hex by setting Patrol/Do Not Retire, but it'll take an extra day.

Yes, I can set Patrol/ Do Not Retire on the way there as a rendevous point PRIOR to bombardment...but AFTER bombardment will the ships return to the hex that I set as the P/DNR hex? Or will they steam merrily on their way down the Sundas past two or three enemy held bases?

Do you still own Christmas Island? If so, set that as the home port. If not, set a dot hex you still own if there are any in the general direction you want to go.

Crap...I never thought of that. I can set home port as Perth! That should take them out a ways into the Indian.

P.S. Where the heck is Xmas Island? I don't recall ever seeing it on our map.

I use Andrew Brown's map and it's south of Java. Not sure if it's in the stock map.

That explains it. We're on the stock map, we plan on using the other in our next go-round.

I really like ABs map. Christmas Island isn't very useful other than a recon site. It's port/airfield maxes are 0 for both (one may be a 1 but I doubt it). Anyway, build a level 1 airfield and you can place some recon planes there for an early warning sacraficial lamb.
