In WITP it is still possible to divide Japanese carrier based fighter squadrons into three divisions of 9 fighters correct? Possible because of the 5 unit maximum for carriers, this is handy because it allows much more flexibility...one can provide CAP, escort and LR CAP simultaneously, whereas with only one, LR CAP is an all or nothing practice, hardly useful for fleet carriers to practice.

If this is still possible, can anyone give me a reason why the Japanese should be the only nation capable of this extra tactical flexibility? The USN/RN squadrons can't divide, even if there is room.

I always hoped for a more useful/flexible mission tree for aircraft, something that could allow for simultaneous LR CAP and escort/CAP assignments, ground attacks as secondary missions etc. Oh well...

In a quick test with the Kaga I was able to divide her 21 plane fighter unit into three 7 plane elements.

Being able to split IJN CV groups is because the group is a "Daitai", not because of the available slots on the CV.
In game terms, only groups of a certain size (group type) can split.

As to why historically, ...?

Based on michaelm's answer, you can just change the size of the carrier squadrons to groups I believe and you will be able to divide them. It won't affect max size or anything else I believe.

This is rather unfortunate for the Allied player. So basically a game definition/programming decision has given the Japanese yet another advantage. Hmmm...

Don't think you really need to worry about the IJN having an advantage in the game. It's rather lop sided by history to start with. Kina like a chess game where one player starts with less than 1/2 of the good pieces .....

OK, I'll bite. This was probably done because you play the allies. If you decide to play as Japan, let us know right away.

So Don, did you see the routine Mike put in to automatically make the dice roll worse if running on a machine with Ron's serial number?

What, did you expect they'd get that part right first try Ron? Probably mis-typed the code so that those playing against you get hosed.

Ouch! Are you past the point of no return and basically succumbed to be bummed?

Well, this is the WITP forum, not a relationships or state of the union etc forum.

The state of the game must be pretty good if Ron is reduced to trolling with bait like this.

Ron, have you tried changing an Allied CV air unit to a group and then splitting it in the game? Could be worth testing...

I thought you were the one being dragged kicking and screaming back into court, not me. I'm not bummed over anything today. I'm really confused about what could have given you the impression I was.

In the editor? No because I was not aware that VS units merge into VB units, freeing up a spot for a three way split of the VF unit. Probably just wreak havoc on the group size.

You are right. As long as the US starts with a VF, VS, VB and a VT group, splitting the VF would create 6 groups on a carrier and they can only have 5. You would have to combine the VS and VB group into one.

Okay, Ron, your drunk hallucinations are really starting to drive me up the wall. (Of course, that is most likely your evil scheme.) Just what exactly is it that you think I said to start all this?

All I know if you want 9 plane LRCAP it really does not help. I have noticed in my games that LRCAP with small amounts of planes is worthless. So I think we are making something out of nothing.

I'm sober...maybe that's the problem. Don't worry about it...my mistake.
