I am at a point in a game versus the AI where I really do need to start sweeping up all those fragments of units and all those single ships that are dotted around to make some sense of it all. Other than going through the list and doing this all manually are there any other ways? It would be really nice to be able to tell all those single AP ships sitting out in the wilds to come back to brisbane or somewhere....

Roger,

I don't know of any easier way, but as a practical suggestion if you decide early on on a "collection and staging point" (eg Pago Pago, which has a continuous convoy run from SF clear of Japanese held areas) then its less of a PITA to simply send any spare shipping you find laying around as you are attending to other matters there and every so often go there and assemble convoys to put to use.

As the war progresses your staging base should be filling up with engineers, infantry, supplies, fuel, repair ships, HQs etc etc so there should be plenty of work to do. If nothing else, such a base gives you somewhere to send all the auto replenshing supplies and fuel out of SF and LA on the way to the front without having to set up manually piloted convoys with mid ocean destinations and remain on station commands, etc etc etc.

Yes there is an easier way, but its not in this game.

Well I guess it all comes down to the fact that the war in the Pacific is all about shipping and logistics.  I guess this is why it takes me an hour to do a turn against the AI.  I hate to think what I would have to do against one of you individuals on this forum with your truly devious minds.

I don't know an easy way either, I think thats really the beauty of WitP though. its just so huge, its almost beyond the capabilities to manage all by yourself.

as Ian R  suggested though, assembling them all into a couple key locations really helps. of course the initial collection of them is a pain, but its worth it in the long run.

In SPI's War in the Pacific, there were 7 maps and 3000+ counters.  A friend and I managed to get the game set up in 2 days and looked at the first turn but never played it.  I do not have the room to set the game up for more than a couple of days or a week at most.  That is the beauty of this game.  Even though it took me 7 hours to input the first turn, I did it over 3 nights.  It's great.  over the last 3 days I have played 7 turns.  However, now that the long weekend is over, I may get only 1 turn every 2 nights ( I am playing AI).  I do not have to worry about this game getting in the way of my family trying to use the house since they live here too.

the old boards games were great, but I had a hard time finding people that could go it the long term on games. I had to make fantasy rules to get my friends to play scenarios of squad leader (lining up all the units onto opposite sides of the map!). so not only is computer wargaming great for the physical mess, but its also great for connecting with wargamers across the country/globe.

I have definitely found this forum as useful for talking to other wargamers.

I had both of SPI's mega-games - War In Europe and War in Pacific.
Against the AI, I sent all my AK/TK through Pago Pago to and from San Fran (for South and/or SouthWest). From there I kept a list of where my TF's would go eventually. The AI will send subs between Noumea and Suva, so you will need to pick way points south of those bases (3 to 6 rows south) to avoid them. Strictly supplies or fuel are done by 5 ship TF's -gets you into practice of not putting all your eggs in one basket for PBEM.
