As though we needed proof that Marines are crazy, I'm watching a show about an incident in the first Gulf War where five Marine Recon soldiers charged, on foot, an entire Iraqi armored battalion.    What's worse, the Marines sorta won.

(It confused the Iraqi's so much that they stopped, which gave the Marines time to call in air support.  Which gave them enough cover to bug out while the fighter-bombers and choppers blew the *bleep* out of the tanks.)

Well, according to the top of the page, I am the only one here. I guess I will just talk to myself. It is 07:11 EDT and the rest of the family, including the dog, are still asleep. I guess I will just talk to myself. This is going somewhere.

Well, there was at least one incident where Iraqis tried to surrender to a UAV!

i wonder is this is where they used the (iirc) thing called a "SFW" (Sensor Fuzed Weapon).

This thing is something out of a sci-fi movie. The weapon project was cancelled over 100 times but they still managed to complete it.

You drop one of these things from a plane, and it can take out (up to) 40 tanks using some really amazing technology. They used exactly 2 of these in the war in one incident, and routed a large Iraqi armored formation. The 2 weapons fell on the front third of the Iraqi formation, devastating it. The other 2/3 of the Iraqis saw what happened and beat a hasty retreat. This was supposed used in a desperate (for US forces) circumstance (but i am not sure if Marines were involved).

i haven't been able to find the exact circumstances of the attack - closest i've found is this:

" Combat proven on April 2, 2003 in Operation Iraqi Freedom, SFW took out multiple Iraqi tanks in a single pass."

iirc, the attack was in something like batallion strength, and an F-16 dropped the SFWs.

Re-reading the original post, it could not have been - the 5 Marines vs. a batallion was supposed to be in the FIRST Gulf War (1991), not in 2003.

From what I saw on the incident, the first aircraft to arrive was carrying basic cluster bombs. I saw another show (amazing what's on the History and Discovery Channels these days ) on the SFW a while back and ya, its scary.

What's even funnier, is that the spearhead of the Iraqi unit was five tanks. The marines must have figured, "five tanks, five marines, that's a fair fight!"

(Actually, they were part of a recon platoon watching the Saudi-Kuwait border during the air phase of Desert Storm. The Iraqi's responded by capturing a Saudi border town and went right thru the Marine OPs in the process. One team failed to see the red signal flare that signaled the platoon leader's decision to bug out. Which is exactly what observation teams armed with nothing bigger than a 7.62 MG should do when being overrun by an armored unit. They just got extremely lucky.)

Maybe I should have said all the gods of hedonism.

Bacchus: god of wine
Dionysos: god of wine
Accasbel: Celtic god of good mead
T: god of good food and spam
Nik: god of pizza and mentally ill bunnies

Yes, the price for upsetting the gods of hedonism is to be visited by the god of hangovers.

Heh... Billious, the Oh God of Hangovers...

The God of Wine gets to do all the drinking, and the Oh God of Hangovers gets to feel the effects afterwards. No wonder he's up for Disgruntled God of the Epoch...

Just follow the Roman tradition. Always have an empty statue niche for the God(s) you haven't found out about yet and make some kind of suitable sacrifice to he/she/them on occassion.

For myself, I prefer not to worship the poreclin throne. So, I do not intake too much. This also saves me $$ for other things. But hey, I made some margaritas the other night and enjoyed them in the hot tub.

Everything in moderation. I like a good glass of beer once in a while, but I won't just empty bottle after bottle down my neck like some demented garbage disposal. Did enough of that when I was 16, 17 and 18...

I have never acquired a taste for beer (Blasphemy,I know).  After about halh a glass, it loses it's taste for me.  I do prefer British beer (in UK only please, we've been there twice) to American beer.  I do like wine, I really enjoy going to the wineries to get it.  I also like margaritas and other mixed drinks.

I've never met an alcohol I didn't like EXCEPT schnapps (spelling). Nasty stuff!

I remember going on a date when I was 16 with a girl and a bottle of peach schnapps. It was all down hill after that and the next morning I was worshipping Ralph. BAH!

I can also drink scotch in small amounts. It does need ICE. Ice was not always plentiful in UK.

Never had an alcoholic drink in my life and never will.  Somehow, I don't think I've missed out on anything as a result.

(The short answer is, "A severe allergic reaction to alcohol.")
