I'm using isolated Allied (occupied) bases for training. I set my fighters on ground or airfield or port attack and they gain experience. Once they reach 60 exp things are going to slow down and it would take a couple of months (six?) until they reach 99.

Forming a ultimate crack air group is possible only if your opponent playing Sir Robin and he is totally inactive. Otherwise i would be forced to use fighter daitais on frontlines.

(NOTE TO READERS: please don't start disscusion that is totally unhistorical/unrealistical. I think this is a nice pay off. Allies run in their holes and waits for 1943 and brand new toys and Jap get a chance to train their fighter groups).

Here is a map which would, i hope, help for following war summary in the first two months (post 494.)

Andy was quite active with Z force and sunk couple of transports, two CLs and couple of DDs near Kendari. I've return the favour but neither of us lost any capital ships in DEI.

you will have great ops losses - in my opinion it is not worth to go higher than 80
even 75 is enough as later each pilots lost to accidents need few next flights
i noticed sth like 1.5-2% ops losses during training against  no enemy

How did you get so far till jan 1st in Malaya? Did you have more landings like Kuantan, or just beefed up Khota Baru?

I see that you have not taken Tarawa and stuff isnt your opponent huirting you from there (LBA and stuff)?

I need any advice regarding achievable objectives cuz I really screwd it last time, by wanting everything immediately.

I see now, you arent using historical 1st turn, well my question stands for hist 1st turn and afterwards. THX in advance.

hi Sneer,

You are probably right but i will try - i need those pilots for Taiho and Unryus because i expect Andy would wait for next couple of months. I want to have chance against his carriers. Don't know if would help it but i need to try...

Ursa MAior:

NO, i've played conservative in Malaya. Landings at Khota Baru and advancing from Songhia. Andy chooses to defend at Johore Baru and withdrew to this base. Landing on Kuatan is risk unless you don't have KB in Malaya (that's means attack on Singapore on turn 1). I believe that you will find more details in AAR first page.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/08/42

Unfortunatly, Andy learns lesson and brings DMSs at Apamama. Pitty, i mined harbour yesterday with 10 subs including two minelaying subs.

Top IJAAF pilot Chiba is now stationed in Japan and he is spending a time with his lovely wife, as you may recall. But his younger brother Bonsai Chiba is still on the frontline...

Dear brother,

Yesterday we were on routine mission to Chengtu. My comrades from 33rd and me didn't expect enemy opposition in the air - veterans from our Sentai still telling us stories about last air campaign in the China where 59th Sentai achived glorius victory against white merecenaries. I feels that my comrades have a great respect for me, but I'm not suprised. My brother is central figure in every tale, my brother is top IJAAF ace!...

As i said, we didn't expect enemy but near Chengtu enemy aircrafts appears suddently! I was confused because i never saw such aircrafts before. After initial shock we took our position and dives on wierd enemy planes. The combat was brutal and we shot down four enemy monsters without a single loss in my Sentai. I didn't score, my mission was protecting Hashimoto. He shot down two enemy beasts, but he told me latter that this wouldn't be possible without me! He added, i felt my back was safe and i could concentrate on these strange enemy planes. My hart was full of pride and i barely sustain the tears...my dear brother, i'm eager to go in another fights against white mercenaries but i promise that i would be careful. Somehow i feels that we are going to face with more unknown enemy ac in the feature,

Banzai, Bonsai

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/10/42

Despite the fact that i'm the best Japanese strategist ever i can not fight against Godess Fortuna!... When i run the turn, i thought... excellent....

PACIFIC

Two enemy AKs found their way to my mines but i realised latter - damage is pathetic...

TF 1049 encounters mine field at Apamama (86,92)

Allied Ships
AK Steel Ranger, Mine hits 1
AK Tuscaloosa City, Mine hits 1

INDIA/BURMA

Perfect planing and my raiders found the enemy once again! hehe, i thought, i will teach Andy a lesson "don't send unescorted ships to the frontline".

Night Time Surface Combat at 26,24

Japanese Ships
CL Abukuma
DD Makinami, Shell hits 2, on fire
DD Kuretake

Allied Ships
AK Empire Impala, Shell hits 18, on fire, heavy damage
AK Empire Glade, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 3, and is sunk
AK Empire Kingsley
AK Empire Flamingo
AK Empire Hunter
AK Empire Haven, Shell hits 4, on fire
AK Empire Trust
AK Empire Ranger

My commander is skilled one and he crossed the T and pathetic enemy transports were forced to respond with front mounted guns. But, this message means nothing obviously (i've noticed that several times before)

Abukuma done her job hiting Impala and Glade. But one of enemy transports hit new and expensive DD Makinami (DD equiped with radars). Kuretake remain silent... after all my commader just crossed the T...

The battle was over and i thought, ok she will make it to Rangoon after i saw CR... unfortunatly it seems that Makinami spent all of ops points and didn't move back during night phase...

She was easy target for enemy DB from Diamond Harbour...at least 2 Dauntless are lost due ops losses - phew! (overall air losess for today are 13-5)

Day Air attack on TF at 26,25

Allied aircraft
SBD Dauntless x 15

Allied aircraft losses
SBD Dauntless: 1 damaged

Japanese Ships
DD Makinami, Bomb hits 8, on fire, heavy damage

My subs still looking for enemy conwoy, while 4 DDs will wait for one more turn and then will try to engage the enemy.

CHINA

Yunan and Kunming AFs are now moderatly damaged (30-45) and Andy doesn't have many units in these bases. I need to rest my bombers but i'm confindent i would be able to close down last two operational Chinese AFs!

Day Air attack on Kunming , at 39,33

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21 Sally x 54
Ki-49 Helen x 54

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
38 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

Airbase hits 22
Airbase supply hits 10
Runway hits 95

Chungking was attacked with 240 Army bombers, Chengtu with 35. I will tranform China in the Moon!

Another push on the south Australian railroad. We are waiting for enemy....

yeah, i recall thread started by Tom Hunter... unfortunatly no one listen to him....

dont worry? and you are referring to?

What would you advise me: upgrade my Navy in Feburary 43 or wait for Andy one or two months?(he could try to exploit that upgrade)?

worry about outcome of this war ...
about upgrade .... I had big fears but fortunately Raverdave cooperated and i can make it - but in my situation i will probably wait for allied upgrades time cos there will be less to hunt
Truth is that you need it but you need decisive battle even more and now enemy has foothold in Cen Pac so further offensive moves in Marshalls are possible within next 4-5 months
if only you could convince him you are upgrading ......
but you have at least 3 months to decide

hehe... i'm not worried about outcome of the war. My Empire will last for another 1000 years

hmph... are you proposing propaganda? Yes, i have a three months to decide...

What i will do is upgrade 2 Taiyo class CVE (one arrives with 1/43 upgrade) and Kagero class DDs....

about propaganda
i spent last few months of discussing inability of Japan combined fleet in going after allied one in an offensive action without LBA cover- you can even find it in my AAR when Raver was close to Wake invasion - i almost convinced myself and lack of any offensive movement backed this enough to find my enemy moving on the border of my perimeter without fighting readiness

Looking good Pauk! Nice read and kewl maps
On my way to a well earned big city weekend in Krakow with something cute

My experience is that KB becomes extremely vulnerable by late 43.
So I suggest that you use it to your best abilities during the first 6 months of 1943.
Bag as many enemy major surface units as possible, bleed his navy and remove carriers
that won't respawn.

I'm now learning how to cope without having a massive Japanese carrier fleet in early-mid 44.
It's going pretty well actually! I don't have to worry about loosing my precious crack air groups
and my island carriers can't sink Andy has also 'softened' up a bit and doesn't see the need
of sending super-ultra-heavy carrier formations with an Uber CAP each time he want's to accomplish
a mission. This opens up more opportunities for both sides.

Greetings guys...

Sneer:

Yes, i recall it. Unfortunatly i had similar strategy for Andy but i doubt that this strategy will work after Raver's dissaster. He would be careful, and my only hope is, as you pointed, convince him that i'm upgrading.

quote:

ORIGINAL: PzB
and my island carriers can't sink

I hope that this something cute is old girlfriend, Japanese are pretty conservative people...

Thanks for compliments... Since nothing really happens i have spare time for fun and stories about IJAAF pilots (Herbieh-san was inventor of this form, but he is concentrated on Navy - hope he don't mind for borrowed stuff)

You are right, i should bleed his navy but KB doesn't have many routes to sneak into his perimeter. I think i have decent chance to sneak into Noumea - East Australia sea but don't know if i could find something there. I'm not a big fan of raid deep into his teritory (east of PH) since he uses picket line (single AKs, PCs...) and i learnt this lesson early in the game...

Somehow i believe that Andy wont wait for late 1943 to attack and that's why i think i should preserve my carrier force. Even if he wait for late 1943, i have a cunning plan for him:

Using the KB as decoy! I know it may sound crazy but this is only possiblity to delay him:

this idea is based on following reasons:

- Allied got CAP bonus and by the late 1943 they have extremely strong AA - i can't face with that and my attacking ac's would be oblirated.

Instead of this i can remove all bombers from my CVs and leave only fighters on them (i wont put additional fighter groups on CVs, i consider it gamey). I will form several CV divisions and keep them in same hex. Each division will be strenghten with good AA platforms (Kongos).

When Andy attacks somewhere he can't count on 4E bombers i will move my carriers near invasion target and near my air bases. Army fighters (Tojos) will provide LR CAP for KB. I know that they are only 20% effective over CVs but 100 Tojos are one additional Daitai...

Of course this is only idea, but, after i saw what Andy did to your KB in 1943/4 i think this is only chance to delay enemy...

As for island carriers that you've mentioned, i started laughing when i saw it. As you know, Croatia was part of the socialist (communist) Yugoslavia. In such regimes everything had to become myth, so our leaders made a myth of Yugoslav Army... one of them was, "we don't need stinking carriers, we have our islands, our unsinkable carriers"

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/11/42

My bad luck continues. Nothing works as planned. Well, perfect planing once again failed due bad luck....

Andy and me playing cat and mouse in the PI. There are still two bases with isolated enemy forces and i using them for training purposes. His subs are in that area for a week and i managed to found them today....

ASW attack near Iloilo at 42,56

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 32
PC Ch 12
PC Kyo Maru #13
PC Kyo Maru #12
PG Unkai Maru #1
PG Nagata Maru
PG Kyo Maru #8
PG Ikunta Maru
PC Kunashiri
PC Hachijo
APD APD-38
APD APD-37
APD APD-36
APD APD-35

Allied Ships
SS Peto, hits 2

Super ASW TF didn't help although enemy sub was in port hex. Well, Ron, i bet you are satisfied now!

One of my numerous subs on Ceylon-Diamond Harbour found the enemy. But, once again i start screaming loudly in my lonely room...

Sub attack at 25,24

Japanese Ships
SS I-11

Allied Ships
AK Empire Kingsley, Torpedo hits 1

Oh, yes that wasn't all. My Bettys took off from Rangoon and tried to engage enemy conwoy but they were unable to locate enemy....

My light SC TF ordered to intercept other enemy conwoy heading to DH. Lots of ships can be found there these days... what he is planing... does he mean bussiness in Burma or just try to convince me that he would attack there?

Pauk,

Just a suggestion but what would you think of mounting a concerted strike on his outpost line. Repeated at irregular intervals it could net quite a few AKs and PCs. E.g. Lets assume he has 5 AKs in a picket line. Well, it isn't much but sinking 5 of them and then 1 month later doing that again will rob him of a few AKs and PGs.

In addition you could "shape" the next confrontation between your carrier fleets since he will, undoubtedly, plan some sort of trap for your next sortie. It might or might not be doable depending on where his picket line is and how it is covered but it might be worth considering at the very least.

greetings, Nemo

sounds good, but his outpost line is located on PH-WC route. It would take quite a lot time till i bring carriers there and return. I had thoughts about that (perhaps i could caught him off guard and find few capital ships and sink them), but the problem with that is:

what if i found the whole Allied CV fleet on that route. And my CVs are far away from the friendly ports....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/12/42

Raiders weren't successful and they are returning to the Rangoon. But I-170 gives a consolation - previously damaged AK Empire Haven got a torpedo and sinks...

One more enemy AK is home for the sharks....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/17/42

It seems that Kunming and Yunan are closed. Chungking and Chengtu are also closed but ever since Chinese withdrew to Chungking i have a problem to keep Chungking damaged at high level (80+).

Chinese "lumberjacks" withdrawing straight to the Chengtu (now the majority of them are in wooded hex 60 miles east of Chengtu) and i won't be able to give them another beating.

I slowly moving units at Chengtu-Chungking-Sian crossroads towards Ichang (and after them to Naning. Andy guarding Kweiyang-Kunming road in the mountanious hex - i have to avoid these troops and attack Yunan through Naning-Yunan road.

In Australia, i will wait few more days until my Sasebo unit came closer to cut off supply/retreath path to south. Then will bulk of my "Darwin Defence Army" march and deal with Aussies (if he doesn't retreat before that.)

AK Oregonian reported sunk (near Ceylon).

Unfortunatly, Andy put more ac on search and found my surface TF near Amandan islands which were waiting for conwoy return from DH. I have to cancel intercept mission and they are sailing to Amandan islands.

AK Empire Raleigh, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

One AK is sunk and i doubt that TK will survive. Lets hope that Andy would keep damaged transports on route to Ceylon. I have plenty of subs in ambush....

DD raider force send to interception position (north of Amandan island). If enemy doesn't spot raiders i could found something day after tomorrow.

AUSTRALIA

Playing a cat and mouse there. Not much hope to caught Andy off guard.

PACIFIC

Enemy invasion TF spoted 120 miles east of Nauru island. That means i will lost Nauru soon. Weak CAP over Tarawa but i have only 50 Bettys available for strike on Tarawa. Damn! If i was more careful i could send LBA and catch enemy bombers on the groud while P-38s are busy with LR CAP duty over invasion fleet.

I've ordered Zeros on Mandalay to sweep Tarawa, just to keep Andy busy...

I have one DD division near Jauilt and ordered them to get into position for interception enemy invasion fleet on their return. Damn again, if he ordered invasion fleet to sail one day earlier he would meet with 6 DDs at Nauru...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/20/42

Usual bombings (Japanese) in China and Mandalay (200 bombers!).

I wouldn't bother with AAR, but my glenn equipped sub found somethin interesting

Doubt that Andy will go for the Marshalls, but KB have to be ready. I suppose that he planned "twin-operation": Perth and Marshalls area with assumption if KB shows in Indian ocean he would attack Marians.

I thought about waiting him at Perth with KB before but couldn't affort myself to park KB for several weeks that far away from the main frontlines. If i was little more gambler i would have a couple of British ships in the bag... oh well....

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Good. This will suck Aussie pool significantly. I guess that evacuated Oz division from the Broome (in May) is near 100 TOE but probably drain all squads from the pool. Defeated units won't have many replacements on hand and will take more time till these units are bring back at full strength.

I doubt that Australians are capable for offensive actions without their American friends
.

I guess that these defeated units suffers a morale penalty which certainly isn't bad!

All in all Andy lost 53 VP for ground losses this turn (i lost 5 VP). And my tk division got 6 experience points (58).

Are you going to chase them? 5 or 6 forced retreats will completely decimate an enemy force for many months to come as I found out in China... A force which, initially, took over 2500 AV to shift was, in the end, being pushed back quite easily by just 400 AV after a few forced retreats. This could be an opportunity to shatter these forces for many months to come.

Hi guys,

Nemo, i intent to pursue the enemy, of cours. But i don't expect Andy will leave these units in the hex. Today my inf divs arrived in hex and joined tk division but keep in mind that we are fighting on railroad so enemy will probably retreat tomorrow... this playing of the cat and mouse can continue until my units arrives under enemy LBA cover or they arrive to the Charters. I ordered attack for tomorrow but i don't hope for much.

I was tempted to order my tk division to attack enemy units yesterday (tk units can pursue enemy from turn to turn) - enemy disruption is high, supply is lost when units retreats but decided not to attack (i didn't have any support from the HQ units). After i sen't turn i changed my mind, but it was too late (we shall never know what would happend)....

Jumper, assault value depends on many factor, as you know. One of them is support - base units have lots of support and they are helping your units (together with HQs) to boost support numbers. So that is main reason why i using BF in attack formations. If the odds are favourable for me they will assault on enemy lines too - why wouldn't they get some experience?

As Esteban said, "there is no rear echelons in my army"

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/25/42

INDIA/BURMA

Another sub sneaks into port and damaged enemy TK. Both subs are on route to Rangoon (rearming).

Sub attack near Diamond Harbor at 28,23

Japanese Ships
SS I-158

Allied Ships
TK Empire Steel, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

AUSTRALIA

Andy didn't bring transports to Perth or they are behind warships. Best option for me is attack via railroad - this will give me another week of HI producition in Perth.

Day Air attack on Perth , at 7,100

Allied aircraft
Seafire x 5
SBD Dauntless x 17
Swordfish x 48
TBF Avenger x 14

Japanese ground losses:
13 casualties reported

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 47

Aircraft Attacking:
17 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet
14 x TBF Avenger bombing at 14000 feet
8 x Swordfish bombing at 10700 feet
18 x Swordfish bombing at 10700 feet
14 x Swordfish bombing at 10700 feet
8 x Swordfish bombing at 10700 feet

Tank division bombarded 1st Australian Army. From the assault value it is visible that i would defeat him. But, 1871 AV seems too much even for the tank division?

Ground combat at 36,93

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 6543 troops, 81 guns, 270 vehicles, Assault Value = 1871

Defending force 22932 troops, 170 guns, 63 vehicles, Assault Value = 502

Allied ground losses:
26 casualties reported

Enemy shows in big numbers at Derby-Perth crossroads. But, i'm not impressed with that.

Ground combat at 13,94

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 39914 troops, 329 guns, 425 vehicles, Assault Value = 1458

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Allied max assault: 1358 - adjusted assault: 1258

Japanese max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 1258 to 1

Defeated Japanese Units Retreating!

PACIFIC

Enemy tankers reported at Noumea. 10 enemy transports reported moving sw from Tarawa. I ordered KB to move to Buin but not decided yet if i'm going to intercept these tranports. I'm not sure if 10 or more empty tranports worth information to Andy where is KB. It would be better to ambush his CVs since Brits are in Indian ocean (finally) - so hiding KB can be better than few stinking tranports...

Yeah, I know.. You had no army HQ in Darwin? 3 inf.div + other units.. You should miss much more support than the BF can offer..

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/26/42

Not much to report. Australian 1st Army retreated south. I have a new plan there - my units moving back on Alice Springs-Charters-Darwin junction and than will move south towards Alice springs 60 miles. Meanwhile Emilys will recon Alice to fool Andy that i'm going for that base. If he move back Aussies i will send my army east from Alice springs road (to the railroad) and attack him.

CR - usuall stuff. I bombed Yunan, Chungking and Akyab, he bombed Mandalay.

CVL Ryuho arrives and relased 50 navalshipyard points. Brand new CVL sent to Truk (one Taiyo class CVE is already there) and will joins KB in Solomons area. After that i will be ready for the combat patrol deep in enemy teritory.
