I was just curious. I here about them here or on the news. I understand a lot of them went to the Gulf Coast after Katrina.

Yeah. I spent some time down in Louisiana after Rita hit. (The National Guard will send you on short notice, all expense paid, tours of the most inhospitable places on Earth. ) There were a lot of MREs that civilians got for free and then sold on Ebay. We got a truckload of the British version of MREs. I brought a bunch back. They are pretty interesting. They actually are 24 hour rations. They were originally for civilians but were not handed out because they included beef and there was the fear of Mad Cow disease. I ate a bunch of them and feel fine. (Twitch, twitch)

Yeah, well... That's the tragically hip MTV for you. At least they selected a proper Mistress of Ceremonies this year. HammanaHammanaHammanaHammana!!!

MTV has been dead since 1989, its just that no one has told them yet.

Are MRE's and that freeze dried stuff you see in the camping stores anything alike?

Not at all any more. The old MREs (1980s to early 90s) had a lot of freeze dried stuff, but now there is practically nothing that is freeze dried. It's basically pasteurized, homogonized stuff that's packaged to last forever.

Is this so? The camping stuff I am familar with is dehydrated and vacuum sealed. As long as the vacuum seal is intact the food can't spoil. Bacteria need two things, water and protein to grow. Things that have no protein, like olive oil are safe. So they remove all the water from the food so it can't spoil.

I thought I recalled MREs being the same, but I could be wrong about that.

They used to have a lot of dehydrated stuff, like the old pork or beef patty but now they look like "regular" food. You can open them up and eat them cold, but they taste much better after being heated. They have a shelf life of something like 5 or 10 years and once you reach that date, you open one in a lot to see if it's still good every year or so. I have a bunch in my basement for travelling and camping and just put the month and year I got it on the bag. I attempt to rotate the stock. The oldest one I currently have is from 1999.

Alas, not true... bacteria and fungi can grow in stuff without protein. Heck, some bacteria* will even grow in anti-bacterial soap!! Nasty lil' critters!!!

Also, eventually the packaging will allow gases (including water vapor) to diffuse directly THROUGH it, although if you have extremely good, thick, and multilayer packaging (like MREs) you can slow this way down.

*(Pseudomonas, especially)

I only worry about two bacteria: salmonella and botulism. Both are addressable by ordinary means of sanitation and food care.

The rest? Well, we've co-existed peacefully for all my life.....so far.

Having served as Infection Control Officer for a good chunk of my professional life, i am (maybe) a bit more cognizant of bugs as far as specific entities, although you are correct in saying most of them are addressable by ordinary means. Other things that can get you are also pretty much taken care of by normal sanitation measures. One exception is Clostridia - make sure your tetanus is up to date!

There are some respiratory bugs that you can catch by breathing, but most are pretty uncommon these days (except in closely packed quarters like an airplane). Most (not all) respiratory bugs are well handled by handwashing.

Ah-hah! Using sneaky professional terms to talk about botulism and tetanus!

Found an interesting website on Clostridia: http://textbookofbacteriology.net/clostridia.html

The last story (at the very bottom) was especially entertaining and WITP-appropriate!

Also learned that botulism is technically not an infection but an intoxication, and that only infants can be infected by C. botulinum. Very interesting.

So.....is my wife infected or intoxicated by estrogen?

Nice one!

Never heard anything about donkeys being immune, and i suspect it is probably untrue in view of the writeup...

Curiously, i have read that OWLS can metabolize cyanide, although i've never tried testing it...

Well, it's official. The Ohio Army National Guard now has a brand spanking new (figuratively, of course) SSG Mogami.

I didn't get any pics. (Smacks self)

I'll get some when he starts drilling and gets his uniforms. I'll also get some from Origins. (Smacks self again)

Did he count as a retread, or a complete rebuild?

Just a retread. We gotta ease him through 3 years so he can retire.

The important thing he asked me about was Origins. Beer is $5 each, so he wanted to know where the nearest VFW was so he could get cheaper beer.
