Here's a screen shot of the 31st US Regimental Combat Team:

I rescued a large fragment of this unit (about 16 squads and twice as many support) from the Philippines and it has slowly been rebuilding over the last 6 months. With 121 squads and 178 support required, it will take well over a year for this unit to completely rebuild.

WitP needs to take another look at how quickly units rebuild. This unit averages about 1-2 squads a week and maybe only 1 support, even though it is sitting in a base with its Command HQ and well over 100,000 supplies.

Regimental/Brigade units should take perhaps 3 months max to rebuild and division's maybe 6-8 months. Currently I have 2-3 Indian Divisions in India that still have well over a year to go to rebuild from the 1/3rd strength they start the game at. And these units have been rebuilding for almost a full year already.

Hi Jim, disagree here. If you are still keep an eye on my AAR you know about what i'm talking (can not disclose here about details - the enemy is listening!:). I have few units which are in condition similar as your regimental unit but i think that is a fair trade - both for the Allies and Japanese.

Evacuating cadres are, hmmm, questionable i dare to say, (don't get me wrong i do the same) and their rebuildment rate is OK. Latter in the game Allies will advance and Japan will have to evaucate cadres - but then youw will know that you won't see this unit for at least 6 months.

As for your question, i guess that you have more than enough replacements in the pool, right?

Try put a leader with good administrative skills....

The Chinese try one last attack at Sian and manage to reduce the fort levels once again. Unfortunately there is another unit Southeast of the city now and I doubt I’ll get away with any more successful attacks from here on out. Therefore my exhausted units are stood down for rest.

This turn I took a look at my Bogue class CVE Nassau and was shocked to see it had 108 planes onboard. All of the planes in its two groups are in a ready status and pilots are available for all of the planes.

I know CVE’s can (temporarily) increase group size when they are used in replenishment task forces, but I never thought they’d grow like this simply sitting in port at SF.

I tried forming a CV task force with the ship to see if the planes would be reduced once out of port, but the CVE still had 108 ready planes once I put it in the task force.

Has anyone else seen this? Is it a bug or am I missing something obvious here and this is normal behavior?

Here’s a screenshot of the ship:

I found another anomaly with CVE Nassau’s air groups this turn. Even though the groups max number of planes were listed as 54 on the top left, I was able to use the ‘Draw one aircraft from pool’ button to pull two more planes into each of the over-stuffed groups this turn. I then was able to get pilots for the new planes as well. That puts a total of 112 planes aboard the CVE.

The new planes are listed as damaged, we’ll see if the planes repair and become ready next turn. I’m also curious to see if the max number of planes number on the top left updates to 56 next turn.

Here’s a screen shot of the fighter group after I pulled the new planes and pilots:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/14/42

The allies got very lucky this turn in Rangoon. Last turn my intel had shown 4 AK’s at Rangoon, so I moved my Dutch sub O16 into the hex to try and get a shot off at the cargo ships. Instead I was met by 3 MSW’s and a PG. Luckily my torpedo struck home and sent MSW W.21 to the bottom and the subsequent ASW sweep failed to locate my sub.

Japan moved Tony’s into Kai Island to replace his Zeroes and my bombers paid the price as the Tony’s shredded several planes and damaged many more. My bomber group’s morale is shot for the foreseeable future.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kai Island , at 39,78

A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed

3 x B-26B Marauder bombing at 6000 feet
2 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 8000 feet

My aggressive Dutch sub skipper launched a second attack later in the turn at Rangoon, but no hits were scored and my sub again dodged the ASW sweep.

Another deliberate attack goes in at Hengchow reducing my forts to level 4. A couple more of these and that’s all she wrote.

Attacking force 345834 troops, 2766 guns, 15 vehicles, Assault Value = 6264

Allied ground losses:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nemrod wrote me that his shock attack at 45,35 was inadvertent. He was trying to leave the hex and go southeast across the river hex. I carefully watched the replay and saw that only his 35th Brigade attacked. I advised him that perhaps it had moved into the hex (following some old orders he didn’t catch) while other units were leaving.

Regardless, I had been waiting for weeks for my HQ’s to march into the hex from southwest before launching an attack here. They all finally arrived this turn, so I am set for a deliberate attack next turn.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 45,35

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 15646 troops, 173 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1671

Allied max defense: 3993 - adjusted defense: 2649

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
3370 casualties reported

I expected such counter attack that's why I was trying to leave the hex and organize my defense on the other side of the river. The only result after three days of travel was an increase of fatigue from the 20-30 to the 50-60 ,for only 50 miles traveled , and finally this unexpected shock attack from the leading unit. I then stopped all the following units to avoid any new shock attack an ordered air strikes to give some protection while recovering. But despite disruption, fatigue , low supply and bad weather preventing any help from the air Jim's attack failed. I suppose his forces are in an even worse shape than mine.
Good news for me all in all, as it means I have enough time to take Hengshow without too much fears about my supply line from Changsa.
As for Nassau air groups problem,I have no idea.I had some problems too with my carriers airgroups during the july" upgrade", I had too put a foth airgroup (chutais size) on some carriers to keep a decent number of planes on board.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/15/42

The SS Narwhal slips into Midway harbor to lay some mines and stumbles upon a nice fat AP sitting at anchor. Torpedoes hit their mark and the dreaded “torpedo fails to detonate” message flashes by. Swarms of angry Japanese ASW assets then pound the sub hitting her twice. Damage was light.

Ok I found another anomaly with my carriers this turn. Here is a screenshot of two identical British carriers:

Take a look at the air groups. The Illustrious still has its original number of aircraft as they should be with 18 fighters and 15 torpedo bombers. The Formidable however has had its air groups morph and has new air frame compliments set.

When I check the individual groups, they all have their maximum allotted aircraft, so no planes are missing according to the number on the top left of the air group pop-up window. I loaded a 1944 scenario to see if the air group compliments of Illustrious class CV’s change over time, but they still have 18 fighters and 15 bombers in that scenario (scenario #11).

I’m really starting to worry about my carriers. If air group composition is morphing on its own, who knows what I’ll end up with in a couple of months? I’ll be keeping a very close eye on what happens to my CV air groups from here on out.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/16/42

Routine air missions continue as normal. No other significant air missions to report.

Hengchow is hurting, daily bombardments are exacting a heavy toll.

Allied ground losses:
436 casualties reported

Well I’ve decided to send the air groups from CVE Nassau ashore and load them onto AK’s this turn. The AK’s will now unload the air groups this turn back onto the same base which will place almost all of them in a damaged state next turn. Here’s a screenshot:

Once a few airframes from each group are in a ready status, I’ll fly them back aboard the CVE. Then once I’ve got the normal compliment of aircraft rebased back aboard the CVE, I’ll rail move the large remaining fragments of the groups still ashore to a base far away and send the CVE to sea to prevent any extra repaired airframes from rebasing back aboard.

Hopefully once at sea with their normal compliment of airframes, the groups will revert to their normal size and lose the 56 plane limit in the top left of the group window. If the 56 plane limit remains though, I’ll have to keep the fragments back on shore in existence instead of disbanding them into another group to prevent the groups aboard the CVE from over-filling again.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/17/42

In its first combat debut of the war, the P-38 joins in a massive air battle over Mandalay and performs well. I was also surprised at the bombardment results. I had set my bombers to 18000 feet so as not to give my shiny new P-38’s too much of an altitude disadvantage in their first combat. I had assumed the bombers wouldn’t do so well, but I was pleasantly surprised by their results.

Although Japan scored a 2-1 loss ratio in its favor (mostly shredding my obsolete planes), for the first time in the war, the allies score large numbers of Japanese planes shot down in a big battle like this.

As I wrote Nemrod, it’s good to finally be able to compete with Japan in the air war.

Allied ground losses:
2784 casualties reported
Guns lost 42
Vehicles lost 3

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a screenshot of the air losses display showing today’s losses:

As you can see almost 25% of Japans losses were on the ground, so my air to air results weren’t as good as I first thought. 69-37 air to air kills, but only 38 of my losses were decent aircraft.

The buffaloes are junk and will be replaced as soon as I get enough air frames to upgrade them. Of course most of the allied airframe production pools are at zero so I may be using them for another year before that happens.

For god sakes man do NOT mess with the VR squadrons based on CVE . They are replenishment squadrons intended for use in your replenishement TF.

Put them back on the ship ASAP and forget about using it in a aircombat TF.
All sorts of funky stuff will start to hapen if you mess around with these squadrons.
Pray, put it back on ship and use them as intended.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/19/42

Another slow day in the war without much to report.

Japan took Hengchow, but once again the Chinese forces pull out just in the nick of time to save their precious on-hand supply.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Hengchow

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 345116 troops, 2555 guns, 13 vehicles, Assault Value = 6000

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 1

Japanese max assault: 11660 - adjusted assault: 10144

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 10144 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Hengchow base !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

China launches a deliberate attack at Yenen and is soundly trounced in what has to be an impossible feat for them at this stage. Look at the Japanese AV, it’s almost 7 times higher than normal, where the Chinese AV is halved.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Yenen

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 110217 troops, 755 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3336

Defending force 49974 troops, 482 guns, 223 vehicles, Assault Value = 950

Allied max assault: 3289 - adjusted assault: 1878

Japanese max defense: 1023 - adjusted defense: 6787

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 8)

Japanese ground losses:
527 casualties reported
Guns lost 10

Allied ground losses:
1651 casualties reported
Guns lost 49

Well my little ploy with the CVE Nassau’s air groups backfired big time today. I had formed a CV task force and stationed it two hexes west of San Francisco to get the CVE out of the same hex as the base with my two air groups.

This turn both groups had 18 ready aircraft so I tried rebasing the air groups back aboard the CVE. Well ALL the airframes went with the group, not just the ready ones. This of course prevented me from rebasing the other air group back aboard as there were now 54 aircraft aboard the CVE which has a limit of 28, so I wasn’t allowed to rebase anymore planes aboard.

I’m sending the taskforce back to San Francisco in hopes I can rebase the other group aboard next turn. Here’s a screenshot of the fighter group after it was allowed to rebase aboard the at sea task force with all of its planes, including 36 damaged ones:

Sage advice, unfortunately it comes too late to help me with my current predicament as my last post demonstrates. Hopefully I can rectify it once the CVE is back at port.

This is a big problem for me since the CVE squadrons played a huge role in the war by remaining on station over invasion task forces providing air cover and ground support while the larger fleet carriers were off doing other things.

Without their assistance in air combat task forces I think the game may be unplayable for the allies. I only need perhaps 2-8 CVE’s for replenishment duties, no way I need all the CVE’s (something like 50+ built I think) for replenishment only.

This is a huge problem for the allies and makes the game unplayable if this happens to all their air groups in my opinion.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/20/42

These night attacks are pretty much useless, so I’ve switched to night sweeps at Mandalay. The net result at Rangoon was I was simply losing pilots periodically to op losses when damaged aircraft crashed on landing and was causing no damage at all to Japan. With night sweeps, there will be far fewer op losses (less damage from flak) and my pilots will still gain experience for the missions.

CVE Nassau could not rebase its other air group aboard even from the same hex. Looks like I’m screwed with this CVE, I’ll probably contact a Matrix programmer to see if they can help with an edit or something to put them back aboard and reduce their max strength to normal levels.

I’ve been forced to order a general withdraw from the southern rail line in China towards Kweiyang. The main reason is the rail hex in hex 43, 39. Due to the catapult effect of rail lines when it comes to land movement, this line would easily allow Japan to launch surround moves against any units I leave in either Kweilin or Wuchow.

While I have enough forces to defend both bases, I simply do not have enough extra units to hold hex 43, 38 as well. Japan could easily sweep aside any units I might place there and then use the catapult effect to rapidly advance into my rear before my units would be able to march out of the trap.

Also Supply is now all but non-existent at these forward bases and I don’t want the horrible supply routines pulling what little supply I now have left in China forward. By withdrawing I can consolidate the two large southern armies and might actually then have a chance of stopping or at least slowing down the Japanese death star.

Here’s a screenshot of the southern rail line pullout:

For god sakes man do NOT mess with the VR squadrons based on CVE .

Sage advice, unfortunately it comes too late to help me with my current predicament as my last post demonstrates. Hopefully I can rectify it once the CVE is back at port.

They are replenishment squadrons intended for use in your replenishment TF.

Put them back on the ship ASAP and forget about using it in an air combat TF.

Jim

The CVE comes with different squadrons. Some with VR and some with VF combat squadrons. Use the CVE with VR squadrons in your replenishement TF and the CVE with combat squadrons in your aircombat, escort and transport TF. You will get masses off CVE, all are just not equipped with combat squadrons.

With our game reaching a period of inactivity, I've decided to forego the daily updates. From now on I'll post weekly compilation updates until it gets exciting again.

Japan launches a large air raid at Akyab hitting the port there. Looks like he’s trying to attrition my supply there, since port attacks are much better at hurting your supplies than airfield raids are. Not to mention there are no allied ships present there.

Today’s air strike on Akyab caused very little damage to the allies so I couldn’t tell if it was a port strike or not, but I suspect it wasn’t since ground troops were hit. Japan is over-using his bombers to get poor results like this and should probably stand them down.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 11/26/42

An allied sub manages to hit an AK south of the Japanese mainland causing what appeared to be moderate to heavy damage. I have lost far more subs than ships they’ve sunk at this stage in the game, but with the new SJ radar upgrades I’m hoping they start to do a lot better.

Japanese armored division pursuing Chinese units west of Yenen attacks and is repulsed. These Chinese units were only caught because by entering their hex, the Japanese contested it which prevented the Chinese from entering the non-base hex to the north they were plotted to move to this turn.

We’ve agreed to a cease fire in this area to allow for the Chinese to move to their intended hex using the round about direction of going to the base to the west first and then to the non-base hex. Japan will not move into the base until the move is complete since that would then contest that hex and again cancel the units move order.

Man I hate the movement system “issues” in WitP!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/06/42

A big allied air raid at Mandalay runs into a very strong Japanese CAP. Allied losses were very heavy but we did manage to destroy a decent amount of the defending Tony’s and close the airfield. I’m going to try and keep the field closed from now on to keep him from basing CAP there again as I can’t take these kinds of exchanges for very long.

Nemrod and I have agreed to a total cease fire in China for one year. Given the almost complete lack of supply there now I conceded total defeat there and asked him for the cease fire.

I estimated it would only take Japan about a month or two to finish off China and the idea of a big empty country of China sitting there for the rest of the game with about a million Japanese troops sitting around twiddling their thumbs wasn’t very appealing.

Here are the rules we’ve agreed to in regards to the cease fire:

Ok so we’ll simply use the limited 4E groups by year rule. No more than two groups in 42, three in 43, four in 44 and five in 45. For this rule I can substitute 3 squadrons for a single group since many British bombers are broken down by squadrons not groups.

Additionally there is a total cease fire in effect in China until 1-1-44. All units must move to friendly bases within the next month where they shall remain until 12-1-43, when they shall then be available to maneuver around in preparation for hostilities starting on 1-1-44. Air units in China may fly CAP or training missions over their own bases. No offensive air missions are allowed except recon flights. Units may only leave China if they first pay PP.

Also the allies may never launch atomic attacks from any bases in China, even after the cease fire.

I shall keep you informed of the supply situation in China if things begin to seem like the theatre is starting to recover enough for offensive operations by the allies.

I also offered to keep the cease fire in effect until 06-01-44. But the 01-01-44 timeframe gives him the time to launch one last major offensive there (probably in the north) before allied strength really begins to grow.

The supply situation in China is so bad right now, I’ve had all my heavy bombers in India flying non-stop supply runs for the past few months. I will probably commit all my heavies that arrive over the next year to this duty as well until/if China can recover.

Right now I estimate it will take hundreds of thousands of supplies to rebuild the shattered units in China to normal strength. I don’t know if I’ll be able to even ship that much supply in within the one year time frame, but I’ll try as best I can.

The strike on Thursday Island does a lot better in the air to air losses category and lose no planes. Too bad these mediums just don’t have the range to hit Port Moresby, their added weight might have closed that field down. In a very unusual mid-ocean sub attack, the SS Herring surfaces and fires torpedoes twice at AK Nitiran Maru. Both salvoes miss, but then the deck guns open up and score five hits. I doubt they caused much damage.

Given last turns failure to launch, I send my P-38’s from Cooktown on a high altitude sweep over Port Moresby to see if they’ll even fly and they get shredded. I expected them to do much better since the Japanese fighters had to climb to intercept and morale and experience was high (both mid 70’s). Fatigue was non-existent as well.

I do want to let everyone know that I’ve finally got my two VR squadrons back aboard the CVE Nassau this turn. What I did was send the two squadrons to Pearl via AK and when they unloaded I tried rebasing the parent groups to Hilo.

Unlike what happened on the West Coast where both damaged and non-damaged aircraft rebased at the same time, both parent groups moved alone and the large fragment groups remained at Pearl. So I immediately loaded the fragments back aboard the AK’s to prevent them from rebasing to the parent formation as they repaired and sent CVE Nassau to Pearl ASAP.

Well it worked (sort of). I rebased the small parent formations aboard as the CVE was getting close to Pearl and unloaded the two fragment groups from the AK’s. But once the Nassau reached Pearl, the SBD group drew a bunch of air frames to try and flesh out to 54. So when I disbanded it into port and the fragments reformed automatically with the parent groups, I ended up with 39 F4F’s and 95 SBD’s aboard the CVE.

Here’s a screenshot of it:

Since my nighttime sweep missions over Mandalay don’t seem to be helping pilot experience, I’ve switched my night fighter group at Imphal to air strikes at Pagan. This is going to be a routine mission so I’ll refrain from further reporting unless something actually happens.

Nothing else to report really, other than my routine strikes at Mandalay and Myitkyina went in today and the normal three Japanese training raids flew as well. I suspect that with the cease fire in China things are going to be very boring until I can finally manage to launch my first counter-strike.

Here’s a copy of the email I sent Nemrod after my last turn:

quote:

Well the air frames on Nassau are balancing themselves out, F4F’s went up to 54 (normal compliment for a VR group) and the 95 SBD’s is down to 60+ this turn. Guess it will eventually get back to 54. Pilots however have stayed on board to the tune of 95 SBD pilots and 76 F4F pilots. Oh well beggars can’t be choosers I guess, at least they’re back aboard.

I spent some time seriously pondering my options this turn. Man the possibilities are endless. Conserving my forces for 43 was a good idea, I just don’t have enough to do everything I want to do, so I have to decide where to strike. If I do well I can move from op to op with my main force using it to get things rolling in all the different theatres. If I screw the pooch and you’re able to smash my force, I’m stuck till 1944 before I can do anything. I’m finding it tough to decide just how to proceed and in what order.

Guess I’ll have to get used to this new phase of the game where I decide the tempo and pace of things. I’ve been reacting to you for a year and a half real time, it’s going to be hard to switch gears at first.

The other big pain is I’ve basically had most of my shipping busy shuttling supply and reinforcements all over the place and I’ve found huge amounts of my lift capacity are far out of place. I’ll have to reorganize a lot of routine convoys to get everything where I need it. I should have been doing this for the past 3 months due to the lead times necessary to get things where needed. Combat forces can be moved rather quickly, but my lift capacity takes months to get anywhere. I’m truly envious of the interior lines you get to operate within. You can reposition and shuttle forces in half the time I can.

Jim
