begins in around 3 days.

Looking forward to starting at Sydney; a Swans game, the Maritime Museum and Aquarium, perhaps a Zoo trip, the usual Bridge and Opera house views, a day trip to the Blue Mountains.....

At the end, Cairns; with the Reef, rainforest and possibly a jaunt to the tablelands. Plus the beach and some fishing possibly.

These two are pretty easy; Canberra's only definite right now is the War Memorial. I haven't studied it that close. And Melbourne is pretty open for the moment.

Dates are 22 thru 28 in Sydney; Sydney Marriott
28 thru 1st in Canberra; Olims Canberra
1 thru 4 in Melbourne; Melbourne Marriott
and 4 thru 8 in Cairns; Pacific International
Name is Davidson; all you locals feel free to give me a call or leave a message so that might hook up for a chat.

I remember that Andrew Brown and Jrcar are over in the Melbourne area and mentioned meeting up, that would be great; and in addition to Herbie in Sydney there was Joe98. I don't know that I will have my phone on over there, I might rent one if feasible and not overly high on charges. Plan to have Internet access though, so can use this at the worst.
Looking forward to the flight, in an almost perverse way; almost double my longest and that was when I was 18, not 44.....eek. Ok, back to the preparations, talk to you all later.

PS. Friend of mine is looking for me to get some shots of an Emily, he says that he thought there was one on display there somewhere, anyone know?

H'mm in Sydney starting tomorrow for one night, so will miss you there...

Staying in Melbourne 23 to 29 (I'm doing a week long corse, staying at South bank) so my wife would kill me if I came down again, however if you wanted to see the Tank Museum on the Mon or Tuesday at Puckapunyal I could meet you there, even pick you up from Seymour Railway Station (about 1.5hrs via train from Melbourne, easy journey).

I don't know of any Emily, sorry.

Cheers

Wife? Oh, that's right, I forgot why I can afford to go to Ozz for 3 weeks now......
Anyway, I'm not doing any auto renting there; mainly to avoid the probablity of getting turned into a red smear on the Nightly News.....
I do love the town names...Puckapunyal just rolls off the tongue....might have to go just to say I went!

Good choice on not driving.

The Joke:

Guy is hitch-hiking along a road when a car pulls over with a bloke and a sheila (guy and a gal) and he asks of the driver

"Are you going to Pucka"

The Bloke says

"No mate she's me sister".

Anyway the Tank Museum is only open on the last weekend of the month and during the week after 1000 hrs. As I work on the base I can drive to Seymour (about 10 mins) to pick you up. The trains are fairly frequent in the morning and leave from Southern cross Station, which is relatively close to you, catch the city circle tram I think (you can walk as well).

Cheers

Rob

Gotta love Aussies. You almost forget that most of the population are descendants of hardened criminals... At least their main export to Denmark is very nice.

Lies, all lies. They had to stop sending convicts here when the gold rush in the 1850s meant that every man and his dog was desperate to get here anyway. All of a sudden it didn't seem like such a nasty, isolated place to send people.

Anyway, given our weather, they should have left the convicts in England and moved British Empire HQ down under.

As for Princess Mary, I knew her at university and I could tell you a few stories old mate.

Whilst you are in Melbourne, why don't you check out the RAAF Museum - Point Cook

A bit harder to get to but well worth the effort!!

quote:

from their web site

Opening Hours

Tuesday to Friday: 10am–3pm
Weekends and Public Holidays: 10am–5pm

The Museum is closed on Mondays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Melbourne to Point Cook/Werribee Transport

If you don't have your own transport to the museum but still want to visit, then we have some good news for you. You can now hop aboard the Werribee Park Shuttle, which departs Melbourne daily to Point Cook and Werribee, including the RAAF Museum. This service operates from Melbourne seven days a week and takes in the Werribee attractions, including the RAAF Museum, Point Cook Homestead and Coastal Park. Bookings are required - phone C&J Squires Mini Coaches on (03) 9748 5094.

Fly In to the Museum

You can arrange to fly in to the RAAF Museum by contacting the Airfield Manager on (03) 9395 1937. Airfield landing fees are waived for legitimate visitors flying-in to the museum.

OK, I was only joking about flying in. Point Cook is only 25 minutes from the center of Melbourne....

The resoration hanger in the virtual tour was interesting. A very incomplete Mosquito and a very servicable looking Mustang amongst other things.

A few years ago, as well as being able to watch the technicians at work in there, one could go for a fly in a (converted 2 seat) CAC Mustang at Point Cook. I don't know if that's still possible. I assume that's the Mustang in the hanger.

I went there just before I joined the RAAF as a technician so I found talking to the guys who worked there most interesting. It's a good way to see what goes into aircraft maintenance in general and restoring historical aircraft in particular.

Cheers, Neilster

Point Cook sounds interesting; 25 minutes vs. 1 1/2 train ride to the tank museum is also attractive.  Though, I might do both if I get really pumped up. Sitting in Chicago O'Hare Airport right now, whiling away the time to departure......

Still no idea on an Emily in Australia?  I might have to look around the net and see what pops up.

Great ideas by all so far; looking forward to seeing the country and people.
Bye.

I know of a couple of Lancasters (in the War Memorial at Canberra and at Bull Creek, Western Australia), a B-24J Liberator (under restoration at Werribee Victoria but not on public display), sundrious other twin engine bombers in various locations around Australia but I am not aware of any Emily.

You aren't thinking of the aircraft below:
quote:

ID Number: P02270.023
Maker: Clackson, R
Physical description: Black & white
Summary: Canberra, ACT, 1955. A Japanese Mitsubishi Ki-21, Army Type 97 heavy bomber, allied code name 'Sally', stands in a hangar at RAAF Base Fairbairn. A sign painted on the nose of the aircraft reads: 'Tokyo Rose'. The aircraft, which was surrendered during World War 2, was later scrapped. (Donor R. Clackson)

Thanks Reg.  I will have to take the time to look around and ask.  Been busy today taking a bus tour of Sydney on one of the red Explorer buses and then ferried over to Taronga to see the zoo as the sun came out.
Now, off to dinner and see what is happening tonight in Darlinghurst/Kings Cross area later.
Good show by the Socceroos tieing that game, I caught the ending this morning live as I woke up; Newell is a hero now.....

Eat something very garlicy. Garlic is very good for the immune system. Not so good for attacting the opposite sex. If you eat beetroot afterwards, it really helps the death breath.

Doing both can be combined by adding fresh garlic to an Australian style hamburger with lots of beetroot. Does anybody else have beetroot on their hamburgers? If not, give it a try. It's tops.

Cheers, Neilster
