Did you know that the ancient Egyptians' maps had north at the bottom? The Nile flows north, so naturally they had it flowing down on their maps.

Just another piece of useless information......

Just got an email from my school saying that the grades for my term finals will be posted on Tuesday. Still quite confident I'll pass, but there was a little twinge in my stomach when I read it.

Don't blame yourself, Robert; the risk of actually finding an American member of the forum that's interested in the World Cup was infinitely small. The chance of that happening was about as high as Tubbsy making sense... or losing weight... or quitting coffee... did I say making sense?

I really liked Saving Private Ryan as a war movie. What I've seen of Band of Brothers looks good too. I'll add Platoon and Casualties of War in there. But Ryan was the best.

So, Speedy....will this improve diplomatic relations with Turkey in your own, personal Empires in Arms saga?

There was something missing in saving Pvt Ryan for me...not sure what that was. Plus, I wanted to tear off the head of that cowardly pvt that watched his buddy get killed and #$%# down his throat. No scene from any movie has ever angered me as much as that one did.

Band of Brothers was overall very good. Platoon also a favorite. I had a highschool history teacher that was a tank commander in Nam. He had many of the same things to say about what it was like being over there as what Platoon had to say. Glad it wasn't my war, my respect to those who served.

Platoon, Band of Brothers, Battle of Britain, The Longest Day, Das Boot, Cross of Iron, Blackhawk Down and I actually kinda liked We Were Soldiers.

In other news, Stupid Criminal of the Day takes us to the UK:

A 12-year old boy was walking home when he was stopped by a big, nasty robber who told him to hand over his cell phone or he'd beat him up. Unfortunately for the criminal, the boy was World Champion in karate for his age group, and he proceeded to break the prospective robber's nose, sending him packing. Talk about poetic justice!

Ah yes, Das Boot. Very good. Took my wife to see it when it came (before we were married), and she left the theater sobbing. There was a long line of people waiting to go see it with worried looks on their faces.

I remember watching it many a year ago, and feeling sooooo bad for the poor bastards who'd made it through such a long patrol only to be slaughtered in an air attack on their submarine base...

They apparently built a U-boat for the movie and spent quite a bit of time tooling around off the French coast. There were a lot of flashbacks, from what I heard.
