Despite all the terror western media made, the Mir went down without damaging anything. Congratulations Russia.

Terror? Speaking from Canada, our news went to great lengths to establish Russia as the pre eminent space jockey and that they have vast experience is bringing their "stuff" back safely. Was fascinating to learn.

Yes, and Pentagon planners are now wringing their hands, and thinking to themselves, "if the Russians can do this, then how accurate ARE their missiles?" This was meant as a joke, but, sad to say, it's probably true.

:) It'll take years before they can get the "Red Menace" out of their brains... Probably just as well, they are the ones paid to worry.

Ok, terror was the wrong word. German newspapers (yellowpress) tried to make people afraid. They told the people that there was a high possibility, that the Mir would fall on Hannover. Almost all other newspapers and broadcasters discussed the "problem", not saying that the big possibility was about 0%.

Ah, the power of the press. Can you imagine if they said it WOULD hit Hannover. There would be mayhem in the streets. Sad that they could be so irresponsible with little downside for them.

This is typical for the German Media. They tend to make people afraid. The war in the Gulf, the war in former Jugoslavia or just the very unobjective debate about the possible/realistic dangers of nuclear power stations are just some examples for this. Sadly most people tend to believe bad news instead of looking at "background information" (not refered to you Frank)

German media is not that bad actually. I've seen American media acting the part of a fearmonger when it comes to nuclear power.

The damn press weasels will do anything to sell papers and fear gets peoples attention. It's undoubtably an international problem. The US media was doing their bit to scare people. Although Hamburg was about half a world away from the intended impact area! The Russians have gotten a bad rap over the years, they have been VERY inovative in a lot of areas T-34, AK45, Sputnik etc, etc. Just because they don't do it 'our' way don't mean it doesn't work just fine. Right now they are going through a very difficult time, they will be back!

Russian machines are ment to be a little primitive (for German point of view, or maybe with not so many aplications) but very reliable. I myself have got a russian binokular and I like it very much.

Sometimes maybe we should remember the motto that was said to be posted in the office of Admiral Gorschkov, "Perfection is the Enemy of Good Enough"
