This weekend (until July 3), HarpGamer.com has set up a server for ANW players to try out MP. This has been generously offered by the HG owners so that your own computer does not need to be taxed with both playing and hosting the game.

Take a look at HarpGamer

You can also find opponents on the HarpGamer forum.

Hope to see you there.

I *THINK* they've taken the server down.

I'm still having an inordinately hard time connecting and STAYING connected.

EDIT: Okay, maybe some other time. It is completely unplayable...and NOW keeps disconnecting me.

Yeah, I reported the same thing to Tony and he said that he will re-start the Server the old way.

He said that he was trying another method so that the Server would re-start by itself if it crashed.  I guess it doesn't work that well.  It doesn't appear to be a game problem.

Okay...back to its old tricks again......

I took out two of your patrol boats, got a victory message, then elected to keep playing...then the "hangs" started again.

Sorry to hear about that.  The server is down and Tony is re-setting it.  I hope that the problem lies with me.  I have a slow machine and Dial-up connection.  A High-Speed connection with 512 mB RAM is recommended and I have neither.

By all means, please try again.  I think that Tony will leave it up for the weekend and you can try playing someone with a faster connection.

Well, I hate to say it, but I'm running a 2Ghz Pentium-M with 2GB of PC2-4200 DDR2 and a 2GB paging file, and the thing is STILL chugging like I'm asking it to run Quake IV on a TRS-80.

When I finally got the Task Manager to pop up, it wasn't sucking down massive amounts of memory insomuch as completely monopolizing the processor.

I know that my system is ancient so it runs like a pig, but some of the other guys have found it okay to run.  I really don't know what to suggest.  I still think that it was the fact that you were playing me (with a Dial-up) connection being the reason why you experienced problems.

There are other newbies going to be playing this long weekend so I encourage you to come back and try with one of them.  They said to try in the afternoon [EST] as the best time to find them.

I have heard that mentioned by another player, too. Don't know if there is anything we can do as players, though.

Looking for help...

Is there a way for me to adjust the Harpoon3Server so that it doesn't make these quite large .evt files in the MPLogs sub-dir?

Thanks!

I see the same thing, and I have a PIV 3,4GHz and 2GB memory. It seems that ANW will monopolize your processor no matter how powerful it is.

However I often acted as a server (and played as a client connecting to myself) and on my system we reached 1:30 compression without problems even in medium/large scenarios; we never at a problem at playing MP itself (except for the occasional crash, but I save often, and relaunching takes a minute). Easiness of setting up and playing is not an issue, at least here.

Just played a nice game with Brad, sadly my Sea King had no surface search radar and Brad's Burke quickly sent it to the sea. Thankfully I was driving a Tico so I was able to use the brute force approach and activate my radars to protect myself. We ended in a near stalemate, Brad's missiles weren't getting thru and I had no idea where he was.

So, why's everyone hanging around a forum when there's a free server up?

Lots of games yet to be played.  C'mon, over!

Just played about 7 games with Evaamo and had a great time all evening.

Thanks again to everyone who showed up and for HarpGamer for allowing the use of its server.

Tony's given us a few more days with his server on HarpGamer.  Hope to see some new folks on it or on HarpGamer IRC to arrange a game!

You know I thought about this on my way into the bank the other day and laughed for a few. Really nice to see folks enjoying Harpoon 3.
