I thought about it I really did.

Load up 8 Army Corps c 30 Divisions, 1,000 tanks, 2,000 crated fighter and FB's, add a million tonnes of supply and cover it with every carrier in one impenetrable CAP and then land on Okinawa direct.

I dont know I may be stupid but it felt like cheating a little. Not really in the spirit of this game since I took over. (Previous Allied C in C's wobbly especially may have had a different view given Hangover's success but I suspect not)

I am expecting heavy resistance and I did consider Formosa and even Luzon.

I rejected Luzon because of the sheer number of enemy bases plus Urban bonus at Manila makes me wary

I rejected Formosa because China is quiet and SEAC Subdued and again a lot of large enemy bases make his intact surface forces a real threat.

I almost went for Malaya and Singapore with 1st Aus Army (3 Corps) but decided they had been in spearhead to long and needed some refit time before I try that - but watch this space in Autumn 44.

Again I thought about it but decided if I am going to get into the fight then i may as well dive right in.

One lvl 7 AF operational in the Marianas is game over for the Japanese defense

350 B29's operatong 120 miles from an emeny base for a week will reduce the whole place to rubble I dont see anything standing up to B29's at short range low fatigue low ops losses Ill turn every island into slag with napalm and 1,000 lber bombs

Good luck, you´ll need it!

Do you think it would help your plans to start a little more intense recon over Northern Japan?
Do you have bases on the Aleutians to start some longrange recon? (3 squadrons of catalinas, some older bombers and some unexperienced new bombers?)
Just make him unsure where you want to go. Collect unused ships in Dutch harbor (even damaged ones) and increase overall activity in the north, use Canadian units to increase units there, split them in small parts to make them look more dangerous, etc.
After doing that, or while doing that send some small units via sub to india and make recon missions. Keep PzB busy, make him unsure where you want to go. Maybe he will send troops there or only let them there and does at least not bring them to the fight.
Send small units into all islands in the area to look after his strength there.
Mine the ports of his most important supply sources, mine the whole DEI area, mine the coastal hexes so his TFs will use deep water what will help your subs to sink some tankers.
You do not need large minefields, they do only have to be found so they will make his TFs make little course changes. Keep him using all his vessels so you could sink them while on sea by searchplanes etc. He can´t ignore mines in his convoy routes.
A mine block western of Saipan between Japan and the islands would be helpfull, too. Use only little numbers to make the mines dissapear in a short time but let him find them. Have you MLs you don´t need anymore? Put them into some forward bases and hope he will find them.
Defensive mines are your enemy (and I am sure there will be lots of them all over the place), but offensive minefields which make his TFs go longer ways will help you.

I have nothing to spare for the Aleutians beyond a pair of AK's unfortunately

Thunderchild is sucking in almost every unit I can find.

My Subs are a lot more dangerous now so mining is not IMO the best use for them I have massive wolfpacks out there.

OK a new plan is beginning to emerge for after the conclusion of Thunderchild.

It is aimed at the Autumn campaign season and will be spearheaded by 1st Australian Army after it has finished off the post Hydra mopping up.

Codename Operation Medusa

The operational order is as follows.

1st Australian Army (Lavarack)
with 9th US Corps (Currently on Noemfoor)
ABDA Corps (Securing Sulawesi at present)
1st Aus Corps (In reserve)

will assault MALAYA - its payback time for Hangover !!!!

Provisional planning is for 1st Aus Corps to land directly onto Singapore as a direct assault while 9th US Corps secures Johore Baru and ABDA Corps secures Malacca as a minimum I am counting on 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 11th, CAN, 1st Aus Cav, 1st US Cav so about 10 Divisions in total.

I am provisionally considering a date of 1st October 1944 for this assault while CENTPAC is in remission following Thunderchild.

Forces for this operation will be primarily Australian, Dutch and NZ probably with the Canadian Division in support.

After landing and securing an objective it is the allied intention to fly the British Burma Corps HQ (Lt General Slim) from China to Singapore where General Slim will begin planning for SWPAC's next objective after securing Malaya...... that operation will be codenamed Operation Sobriety.......

TF's are a moving.

Carriers raid Tinian for the first time backed by Superforts.

My intention is to close the AF ASAP and then start on the Port.

Once I close the AF the superforts will keep it closed while my Carriers hit ground forces and ports

OK In terms of TF's I have 3 on station (6 Fleet CV's) at moment with the Bennington and Ticonderoga TF en route with a replenishment TF and 2 Escort Carrier TF.

A 3rd Escort Carrier TF and the other replenshment TF are providing air cover for the Invasion Fleet which is leaving Entiwock at Cruise speed.

The Hornet/Wasp TF has left SWPAC heading for Entiwock.

A 6th Carrier TF has just left Pearl for the West Coast for a quick refit as they are now at 15 sys following high speed runs trying to catch PZB's raiders.

I am so glad that PZB wasted KB this would be a lot harder if he hadnt.

As a fleet in being I would have had to honour the threat.

I get another CV in about 45 days then its a while until the next few.

Just added it up 12 USN Fleet Carriers, 1 RN Fleet Carrier, 20+ Escort Carriers, 9 Light Carriers....

By my maths that c 2,000 carrier aircaft covering this invasion and a further 700+ on the replenshment TF's with about another 300 on uncommitted carrier trained sqns ready to rotate into the fight   now not all of those are committed at once but.......

I estimate 2 weeks for the invasion to get there so that will allow 24/7 pounding of the base.

I ordered the 29's to go in and close the AF today will be a max effort strike day trying to close the AF

Out of interest... What are you expecting to meet at your target in terms of infantry, fighters and fleet units?

I am expecting a minimum of 1,000 AV, about 60,000 troops and a 1 in 4 chance of 240mm CD guns plus probably some armour....

But it is flat terrain whereas Saipan and Pagan are mountains so I will avoid the x3 mountain multiple.

In aircraft and ships I just don't know is this PZB's line in the sand. He has a powerfull surface fleet and I am still short of this type of units (my surfact TF's are CL leaders with 7 Fletcher Class DD's).

He has 12 BB's but one is in dry dock.
Potentially several CA's will be back from yards and probably 1 or 2 CV's (I dont think Japanese yards can have fixed more than that yet).

Our surface fleets are evenly matched excpet for my mass of Fletcher class DD's and DE's but my heavier units are overtasked with other roles.

BB's in bombardment and Invasion TF's
CA's in Carrier and Invasion TF's

The real question is will he use them or wait for a joint Kamikaze, surface assault.

I expect 1,000's of aircraft but with stacking limits and my ability to close an AF at will with Superforts (although keeping all 4 suppressed will be tough) and the attrition to his pilot pool following Minotaur and Hydra I am not sure how hard he will fight.

The no.1 advantage I have and that I am trying to exploit is the lack of time between my operations.

Because of the long pause in ops in late 43 I have been able to pretty much be on continuous attack since Feb 44 hopefully this is keeping his trained pilots low.

OK one more turn of all out effort and my replenishment TF will be up with the carriers.

I am going to move them through the Marianas to try and stop PZB from bringing in Battleships,

I will wait in situ for 2 days more until my TF's replenish then they will go for it.

Would you consider downgrading some of your reserve squadrons ( or squadrons in quieter sectors) to previous versions of the Corsair ( youmay only have 30some F4UDs but you have 1200 of its immediate predecessor and that's not exactly a bad aircraft)  and antecedents of the F6F Hellcat in order to free up forces for your main thrust?

I understand you may not have many reserve squadrons to downgrade or quiet sectors but downgrading wherever possible would allow you to rotate these slightly obsolescent squadrons into the fight whilst allowing you to keep a core of your best squadrons outfitted with the best planes possible. This would tend to ease your replacement worries and allow you to mount more sustained operations.

Isn´t downgrading only possible with PDU on? I think when this game started PDU was just a dream. Else I don´t think PzB would have Oscar IIs on duty.

This is a pre PDU game. So I think downgrades are not possible.

Ah, sorry, I thought downgrades might be possible without PDUs... Sheesh.. Reminds me why I didn't get the game until I heard PDUs were enabled. Sorry about the poor advice then.

The advice was good just not possible in this game.

I would not want to be trying this battle if the Japanese had 1,000's of Tonies and Tojos on defence rather than Oscars and Zekes.

My casualties are worrying and my CVR's dont seem to be replacing my bombers. Also my sorties are gettign low and to rotation of carrier TF's are not keeping up.

I am considering trying to laugh the whole battle off as a bluff to PZB delay for 3 days.

Withdraw all my TF's to Entiwock re arm replenish and then come back turn the amphbs around for a turn as well.

What do you think would he fall for it ?

I dont want to risk an invasion with my pilots so tired and low on sorties I will think about it a little

Today I hit Guam tomorrow I have ordered a stand down of bombers while I sweep and recon to try and figure out his strength

I am expecting a minimum of 1,000 AV, about 60,000 troops and a 1 in 4 chance of 240mm CD guns plus probably some armour....

But it is flat terrain whereas Saipan and Pagan are mountains so I will avoid the x3 mountain multiple.

Well, you had better hope you shut down the airfields on Tinian and nearby as he has show n he can airlift 15-25,000 troops in very short order. The Mariannas are also close enough that barges might be a possibility for intra-island transfers. Did you consider that in your calculations? If not, that's maybe a total of 100,000 troops he could get to Tinian, all well supplied. It's a good decision not to go for a place with mountains, that would be a killer.

And what level forts are we talking about? Level 9, I suppose?

What is the strength of your invading land forces? You've done a good job of detailing the naval and air assets assigned to this, but I've missed the force strength of what you're putting ashore -- they're the ones that will need to do the fighting after all!

I see that you've been kocking down his air assets and gradually closing a lot of airfields. Can you keep that up and make the whole area a no-fly zone before you send in the transports? Or at least make his air attacks be at long range -- that should make a for a lot of unescorted bombers and enable you to inflict more damage on his troop/supplies. It would also silence a decent number of CDs which in the past have really caused mayhem amongt your invasion forces.

It'spretty much irrelevant to close airfields to prevent reinforcement by air.
Mavis and Emillys will do the trick anyway.

I have 170,000 men and about 500 tanks on the way plus two Corps HQ and lots of arty but to be honest I am wondering whether to proceed.

The unit count is rising at Tinian and despite my best efforts I am being outproduced by the Japanese.

I have identified 3 Divisions on Tinian plus an Ultra Heavy Arty Bde and at least some vehicles which means tanks (my worst case projection had 2)

I physically cannot keep my Hellcat Sqns at full strength whereas the Japanese seem to have an inexhaustable supply of fighters. (Hellcat pool is almost exhausted when what is aboard my carriers is gone thats it. I lose 40 - 100 per day depending on what I do and if they shoot down 200 - 300 enemy planes so what I cannot replace my losses the Japanese can.

Also keeping Tinian closed to prevent air transport is almost impossible due to the engineers and supply he has there.

I am very depresssed about the whole thing.

(For all players PDU's will make invasions by the allies in 44 without LBA to cover them impossible IMO I am only keeping up at present because the Hellcat eats Zekes and Oscars a 1:2 or 1:1 exchange rate is disastrous IMO for the allies if all those Oscars were Tonies or Tojo's I would be toast (or god forbid Franks)

OK I will give it a few more days and see what happens a decision will be required before I land any toops I may go ahead just to see if it can be done.

I am coming round to a view that this may just not be possible without a few hundred more superforts and more carriers.
