They mostly work automatically as an expendable defence.
If you want to see them work you can set the logging on and read back over what happened. You'll see countermeasures deployed in effect as a negative to a torpedoes chance to hit.

Generally speaking though, there's a decent chance that a sub once detected and localised is dead .

Sorry im not getting this

Also, im not seeing weapon calculations:hit chances, modifiers etc, how do i view them

Here is another suggestion on how you might get the decoys to work more effectively.  I used it recently in a Multi-player game and found it quite useful.

I was in command of Walrus-class SSK and I was being hunted by Ka-29 Helix ASW helos.  They dropped torpedo after torpedo onto me and my decoys managed to stop 5 before the sixth finally got me.  [I would consider that effective.]

Although this is by no means definitive, this is what I did.  After each torp engaged my sub, an Ensonification decoy was fired.  The AI will not automatically re-load this countermeasure for me because there is already another WhiteNoise counter-measure in the mount.  So, I hit the F5 hotkey and re-loaded it manually.  In the end, I expended 5 of these decoys before the last torpedo got me.  It might have been pure luck, as well, to explain my survival.

If the match you are mentioning is the same we played the other day then yes... you were really, really lucky...

"Luck is only Perseverance meeting opportunity."

At least, that is what my fortune cookie tells me.

Yes it was our Lone Wolf encounter with the PlayersDB.  I was actually beginning to think / hope that you might run out of torpedoes!
