OK, I went back to this old classic after not playing it for years. Guess what? As the Russians I still lose every time! I might get one Norwegian boat, but all three of mine get nailed each time.

Would someone post some help? I feel like a real nOOb, but hey, I'm losing sailors left and right out there

Also be wary of civies in the way. They're not always what they seem.

You know, this is why I really looked forward to getting H3ANW. It's very cerebral . After reading "Fleet Tactics" I am ready to try out a few things, but I'm still making rushed decisions. The VCR playback is a great feature, btw .

The Norwegian Penguin missile are passive arent' they?  They use IR, only problem is their very short range.  Watch out!  If you had to fight those Norwegian PT boats in the fjords where surface radar would be a mess you would be really screwed.

I finally won as the Russians...... lost a boat, but got all theirs. I'm not sure of the etiquette for posting spoilers, so I'll not say how I did it, unless someone wants to know

I've posted nearly 100 After-Action Reports. There is a section for it here.

What I normally do is just put [Spoiler Alert] at the end of the title.

If you have the energy, you might want to support the game on other fora, too. Here are some sites that openly welcome AARs:

StrategyZoneOnline

HarpGamer

SimHQ AARs

SimHQ Harpoon

FilesOfScenShare

All host separate AAR sections where any member can freely post reports. No need to send them in or ask an admin, either. The feedback has been nothing short of spectacular with many folks coming to try the game after reading them.

It's an essential book on the fundamental of naval tactics & strategy by Capt. Wayne J. Hughes, USN.

Fleet Tactics orignally published in 1986
The latest copy recently publish in 2000. Fleet Tactics and Costal Combat

Both of these books were written by now retired US Navy Captain Wayne P. Hughes. They are pretty short (just around 300 pages). In it he mainly explains the evoultion of naval tactics since the introduction of steam, breech loading weapons, and eletronics. For each chapter he sites major naval engagements or battles of that era or used that technology or tactic and how they evolved through testing and actual use. For example he talks about the introduction of radar at sea and talks about the series of naval engagements between the US Navy and the IJN during the SW Pacific campaign and how the US Navy commander mis-understood how to effectively use radar and this lead to serious losses (Savo Island and Cape Esperance) and after radar was better understood by some commander this lead to battles which the Japanese navy was the major loser and not the US fleet (such as actions by 31-Knot Burke and his Destroyer Squadron 23 or the Battle of Vella Gulf)

Another book to look for is called Soviet Naval Tactics
This is by a Milan Vego and ex-pat Yugoslavia that was one of the first foreign officers to attend the soviet verison of the Naval War College. His book is just a little larger and drier in material. But it presents and overall on how the Soviets view any naval engagement as a matter of mathmatics and application of science. For example in a chapter on how to defend against an offensive naval landing. He shows how the Soviet navy drew up a mathmatical formula on how many sensors were needed to just search out to the maxium effective range of coastal gun batteries to give them the most effective firing solution. Another example is how to defend a bastion against foreign submarine interferance, he describes how again the Soviets came up with a forumla on if the bastion is so big and you had so many subs and so many aircraft where the subs were supposed to patrol and how often the aircraft and where they were going to lay thier own sonobouy streams to present as tight a net as possible. This formula would then all change again if you were added a couple of surface ships to the mix as well.

Thanks Yankee, now I have go spend more money. :) I have "Fleet Tactics" and recently rejoined the USNI so I could get discounts on their books and get the Proceedings. I figure it will pay for itself quickly. I just ordered "Soviet Naval Tactics".

Edit: Last night I started rereading "Fleet Tactics" and Hughes was talking about the book "British and American Aircraft Carrier Development" and I almost bought that. It talks about the use of wargaming, and military exercises in the development of the carriers and their use.

One of my favorite tactics in DP is to split one of the boats away from the main group and light it up like a Christmas tree.  Find the enemy, take a fix and bearing, launch my birds, go dark, hope to god they didn't get a good enough fix and vector the remainder in from a completely different direction. :D

aka Radar picket. And a vital (though short lived) role that can be!
