I had just posted it over at SZO forum, might as well post it here as well,as an afterthought and greeting to all 'Harpoon' veterans. After my purchase of TOAW3,Matrix games released another three quality wargames in successions, posing a dilemma and a potential financial crisis that would suck my purse dry~~~ Since i am not really into tactical wargames, partly due to previous quality wargames like Combat Mission and Steel Panthers already in existence, and that the phase system utilized by Panzer Command isnt really to my taste,my money vote was being contested btw Harpoon3:ANW and COTA. As wargamers new and old alike would know,Harpoon series is a representation of the wargaming's glorious past, while COTA the revolutionary future. Nevertheless, despite the numerous improvements implied in COTA over HttR i still feel that the engine hasnt realised its full potential and some features left desired are still unexisted(like minefields, more complex air and naval system),and thus i put my purchase on hold for the series till the next installment. Furthermore, the novelty of naval wargame genre and the established community lures to me even more to run off with a copy of Harpoon3:ANW. Nonetheless, i was hesitant in finalizing my purchase, and a great deal of the reasons behind is its retro graphics, which suspiciously hails back from gaming era that of Space Invaders and Pacman, and i thought the latter's graphics looks more contemporary than those of Harpoon3:ANW! The turning point is when i downloaded the demo for Harpoon Classic 2002(the Harpoon3 demo was being taken off the AGSI website) and played it,and from then i realised that Harpoon series possess an enigmatic charm that defies craving for conventional aesthetic appeal. I was so engrossed that i played it for hours that i couldnt get my hand from moving the mouse pointer from clicking on Harpoon Classic 2002 shortcut, and deciding to follow my instinct i made my online purchase of Harpoon3:ANW. Expectantly, i click on the Harpoon3:ANW exe. file icon more than i had expected. Perhaps,I posit, that part of the allure of modern naval wargames like Harpoon series is the suspence and thrill of scouting for target and neutralizing it,whilst hoping to get away with it unnoticed, together with its edutainment value and the sense of achievement through overcoming the steep learning curve imposed by technicalities of actual naval warfare, and this in turn allows for the breadth and depth of the game itself. In all,i am still struggling to understand the mechanism of the game fully, and the articles here show me the rope(along with current affairs intertwined with it), Harpoon certainly a hidden gem,so long one is able to overlook its aesthetic shortcomings.
