How does one determine the "direction" of an escarpment? My initial assumption, based on the graphical representation on the map, doesn't seem to always agree with some historical maps that I've looked at. According to the manual (and other sources), the question of whether a unit is on the high side or low side of an escarpment seems to matter, but I can't find a definitive description of how to determine which is which.

Page 39 of the manual, section 13.9.7, modified by the Whatsnew entry for manual errata with regard to that particular section.

Little by little, you are restoring my faith in your TOAW knowledge.  Of course, I'm assuming you are right, since I don't have access to my manual for another few hours.  If it turns out that the Whatsnew entry of the manual errata doesn't do the trick, you will have set yourself back by at least a week.

I have to redeem myself...Jarek (Legun) just spotted a bug in CoW and TOAW III that was widely assumed to be a "feature" by many of us...for years!

For penance, I think I'll start off with 20 Hail Norm's and self-flagellate myself throughout an entire, unsaved turn of DnO...

Do I even want to ask the obvious questions?

1) What's the bug?
2) How does it affect the game?
3) When is Ralph going to fix it?

The important question is #3, to which the answer is the next patch.

The followup question to the answer is answered with "a TOAD Tuesday"...

I did wonder when that figure of twenty-seven combat rounds came up.

It should be available from the start menu. Or just go to C:\Matrix Games\The Operational Art of War III and click the What's new file.

Not to be difficult, but I looked at both of the places that were suggested and I couldn't find an answer to my original question. I understand the combat and movement effects of escarpments, including the revisions in the WhatsNew section.

What I don't find is a description of the graphics for escarpments. Specifically, when one is looking at the map, how does one determine which side of the escarpment is the higher side (and therefore the one with the combat bonuses). Is there some rule about placement or some element of the graphics which would show this?

Incidentally, the issue arises because some of the escarpments (in several scenarios) don't seem to match the actual terrain. In fact, they seem to be reversed. This may be a mistake on the part of the designer or perhaps I'm just missing something. Unfortunately, I'm at work and can't pull up any maps, so I can't reference specific hexes in particular scenarios.

The hex in which the escarpment is in is the "up" side.

That's what I thought, but it doesn't seem to always hold true on some of the scenario maps that I have looked at. I think its just a designer's oversight, but I haven't actually designed any scenarios or done any maps, so I wasn't sure. Fortunately, the "important" parts of the map seem to be correct, as far as I can tell. The only discrepancies I've noticed are on the fringes of the map, where wise and/or sane players

As long as Alam Halfa ridge (in North Africa) actually appears as a ridge and not a depression, thats good enough for me.
