Some of you may not know how the US soldiers wrote home during the war. Their letters had to be written on special forms that were then censored and then photographed. The folks at home received this "V-mail" in small envelopes. The V-mail pages htemselves were very small, maybe 4 inches by 5 inches.

I've scanned a V-mail my Dad received from one of his friends that was a Lieutenant in Europe:

My Dad was 11 yeras old when this was written to him. "Sammie" is my aunt, who was 18 and very pretty at the time.

It says:

Page 1: Germany, 14 Feb 1945

Dear R.L.,

Received your very welcome letter of 24 January and it was swell hearing from you. As you see, we are back in Germany after full participation in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. In answer to some of your questions, R.L., it is correct that there is a veritable 'graveyard' of German planes in England, mostly of those shot down during the historic 'Battle of Britain' in 1941.

The piece of chute I sent you was American. R.L. I forget the empty shell I sent you but I think it was

for a .45 Colt pistol.

R.L. I'd sure like a picture of you and Sammie too.

We all keep pretty busy over here, R.L., and so don't think too much about being lonesome The war really absorbs you and sometimes I think it's harder in that respect on the folks back home because time here seems to fly by.

Well, R.L., tell all the folks I said "hi" and I'd like to see y'all once again... hope it will be soon. I'll scrape together a few more things for you. Write soon.

Cheers i could read most of the first page, but the rest was lost on me.

Very interesting to hear a 'man on the ground' so to speak perspective on the war, thanks for sharing it.
