One of my subs attacked an AK with the name Beryl off the coast of Kagoshima. The torp failed to detonate (damn Mk 14s) and the escorting IJN DD dropped some depth charges on my boat, which thankfully missed.

1--Is the name a typo (by leaving off Maru)?

2--Did a ship with this name actually serve with the Japanese Merchant Marine?

3--Is there an error in the OOB which lists the ship as being Japanese?

Most likely an european ship interred in japan at the start of the war in europe and then commandeered by the IJN or IJA
