I witnessed spontaneous combustion in action yesterday. The town garbage dump caught fire, sending a big fat plume of white smoke billowing into the air. After about a month of hot weather and nearly no rain, it's highly likely that it ignited all by itself...

This reminds of the (sort of true*) story: they crossed fireflies with tobacco - theory being they could make cigarettes that light themselves...

* they did insert firefly genes into tobacco - causing the leaves to glow under the right conditions...

That's a good one. Are you listening to Glen Miller

WiTP question. I have 3 brand spanking new cruisers in Palembang. Can I bombard those dastardly Japanese ground units even though I own the base? Pretty Please

Next question. I sent mine layers to Wake. With orders to return to Pearl. How come they aren't mining.

What have I done wrong?

Do they have mines? Did you replenish in a very big port?

In order to lay a minefield, first, you have to take her out in public so that she doesn't think you're ashamed to be seen with her ... then, buy her a couple of drinks ... while she's getting sloshed, talk about how sincere you are and how intelligent she is ...

Oh, wait a minute. Sorry. Do you have those layers on "do not retire?" Also, did they start from Pearl? Further, take a look at an individual ship. Is it loaded with mines, or do you see the dreaded red zero (and I don't mean Brady von Richthofen)? Finally, are they on "mission" speed?

You SHOULD be able to. Always fun because you can reload and keep shelling The Thread out of them. However, if the enemy does take the port, there is a glitch in the game which may cause your ships to scuttle...

That was a good one pasternakski. It's good to see you here. I will verify mission speed (I think I had them on full). Thanks.

They need to be set for mission of MINE WARFARE.

AFAIK, they should be set to RETIREMENT ALLOWED, not DO NOT RETIRE.

They need to have mines (check on your ship screen if they do) - at this point (Jan 1942 for Allies) you can only get them at a size 9 or 10 port (which has supplies). Later you can use MLEs, but you need not worry about that now.

The speed the TF is moving shouldn't matter - i routinely use CRUISE speed in backwater areas to save wear and tear on the ships.

Well I think it's worth a try. Seeing as it is the AI I can always replay the turn and send them out into the middle of the Indian Ocean. Thanks Robert.

Be aware that you might have to change the home port. Rarely, ships that are assigned (say) Palembang may scuttle whether they are in the port or not when their home port is taken.

This has never happened to me (thank The Thread) but it has to some people. At least one player had his carriers scuttle because of this bug (although i disremember all the details right now).

I'm not sure about this, but I THINK a bombardment TF has to originate from a base different from the one it is trying to bombard. Let us know, willya?

Also, if these are Dutch light cruisers, they ain't gonna accomplish much. Also, I have had problems with bombardment TFs consisting of Dutch ships just hanging up at the "one phase movement" distance from their assigned destination and not doing anything.

Nothing against the Dutch. I'm part Dutch myself. Not that there's anything wrong with that...

Ah, when I think of the greatness I could have aspired to had I not lost over 1,500 posts in the great "hacker slash" of 2004. Some of 'em were really terrific, too, like my impersonations of a guy named Chiteng, who liked to pretend he was a scholar of history but mostly revealed himself to be a wad of bung fodder. He still posts his sad, sad tale of woe over at Vinny's Streakhouse.

I remember you from back then.

By the way the Dutch light cruisers were toast when a IJN battleship bombardment task group came to call. Ce la vie.

Well Pasternakski, you have helped me again. You were helping someone over in the main forum assign carrier task force leaders. Every one of my transport forces (some 40 or 80) have auto assigned leaders. I now have to go find Marc Mischner and a few others and bring them home. My own @#$%$^@ fault. No more auto assigning of leaders for me.

Well, it's 1/29/42 in my game. Fully 80 percent (by my estimate) of the IJN is in the DEI.

I have 2 USN carriers going around ubderneath Austrailia. I was hoping to spring something. I may rethink this.

2 carriers are on their way to northern Japan to try a nuisance raid. If they get detected they turn around.

I am trying for 1 more ambush at Kendari using Repulse. We shall see.

This next turn will be executed tomorrow.
