I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the production point system may be more complex than necessary.

There are factory points, population points, resource points, production points, research points, supply points, factory point multipliers; then there are transport capacity points and amphibious capability points, not to mention the usual varied attack and defense points that are found in all wargames - except that they are more numerous here.

Each kind of point has one or more sources or uses, but depending on various factors, they may not all be used all the time - for example factory points may only be used if there are available population points, but then only if the population points come from certain territories. Some points are cumulative from turn to turn but some are not.I know that factory points are lost if not used, but I don't remember about population points or supply points.

To make things even more complicated, it is difficult from the screens to determine exactly how many points of one kind the player has.

Other kinds of points are OK with me, but are the various points used for production really all necessary? Why not simply give each area a number of production points combining factory, population and resources? You could still have rules about their use, for instance you could still limit conquered territories to use their production for research, as is the case now. and Russia could still move its production pionts to the Urals.

Make no mistake, this is a great game, one of the best grand strategy games . But would anything be lost by simplifying production a bit?

Yes, some realism would be lost. The Caucasus are very important strategically as they have a lot of oil (resources), but they have no factories. England has lots of factories but few resources and must be linked by ship with parts of the world that have resources. Population is an obvious limit on how large your armed forces can be. We think it's all needed or you end up with something very very simple like Axis & Allies which is great fun but has very little historical reality to it.
