I think I started playing the version of Harpoon that became Classic 97 back in the early 90s, when there was only one set of scenarios. Sometime around 2002 I reached the point where I could beat about half the scenarios, no matter which side I played, without editing them. I was really proud of myself. I bought a Mac PowerBook so that I could try Harpoon II, and it didn't really impress me. This version, however, although it looks the same as Harpoon II to me, also looks like it has potential. Unfortunately, I ran into a lot of trouble just going through the tutorials. Fortunately, this forum has been a great help, and I am almost ready to start a real game. Other than the illegal action by ships issue that I mentioned elsewhere, I'm having video issues. I was trying to Alt-Tab back and forth between the game and the manual and found that the game screen doesn't refresh until you move the mouse, which uncovers one very small screen segment at a time, or push a button. Unfortunately, its hard to get enough screen refreshed to find a button. Another issue is that when I try to drag windows open horizontally, it doesn't always work. What I end up with is a narrower window and part of a window border. The only way I can get rid of the window border fragments is to create a zoom window and drag it around like an eraser. Tracking windows seem to be very flakey, and I avoid them like the plague. Basically, I would like to see a little more work on the windows, which don't seem to have changed much since Harpoon II. How about docked buttons to bring up the Game Status and Unit Status windows? I know its nit-pickey, but I spent a lot of time as a programmer and specialized in user interface design. Some of the UI decisions made in the design of this new version seem a little . . . unexpected.
