Hello talansoft veterans. Perhaps someone can help me get West Front and East Front to run on my computer. Both games used to work on my old computer but I've had no luck with my laptop. I did a google search regarding the XP compatibility and came across this thread in another forum:

XP compatibility

I've pretty much followed the advice step-by-step, first reinstalling West Front / East Front then dowloading the newest patch and copying it over the other files in the main folder. I've reset the computer, changed the screen resolution and fired the game up from the CD. I'm able to see the intro video and select either a campaign or scenario but as soon as I try to start the scenario I get an error stating there is no CD in the drive and to insert the proper one. I know the CD works because the autoplay works, as does the scenario editor.

Is there something I'm missing here? Is there some other trick needed to make these old games work on an XP system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'd really like to play these games before they're re-released.

Cheers

Right click on the desktop shortcut icon for each game.  Under the "compatability" tab try Windows 95 or 98.  See if that helps.  I running WF on my XP computer at home with no problems.  Hope this helps.

XP Compatibility may also be needed for installers too.

I have XP 64 OS and was able to get Europe in Flames to load just fine. Havent tried Rising Sun yet.

EiF if you remember is a complete set of the games (less RS). It works just fine on XP. Patched and ready to go you are back to CSing in no time.

works fine on my xp. Coupel thoughts:
1) try without patch. I vaguely recall I may have had issues after the patch. try this last since a pain to reinstall :-)
2) make sure you keep the install directory either where it defaults or at a the base level of the C drive
3) maybe most importantly make sure your CD maps to a conventional drive letter like D or maybe E

Did you do a search in the "groups" part of google? this problem sounds vaguely familiar to me from years ack

Here is what I did. During Installation I opened the CD (did not use autoplay) and right clicked on the "setup icon" went to properties/compatibilty and set it to Win98 from there. Then I installed the XP patches afterwards and both West Front and Rising Sun Gold work perfectly. Now if I could just get "Age of Rifles" to work perfectly. I can get the game to play, but NO SOUND! (cry) ;)

Thanks for the advice everyone but this peice of &*#$ still wont work. Ravinhood, after you installed the game and applied the patch did you apply the Windows 98 compatibility to the .exe file as well? I tried that too but no luck. Also, did you alter your screen resolution at all?

Where did you get your patch for WF from? I'm assuming that's what you meant by the XP patches.

There has to be something wrong with the game when loading the scenario files from the CD. Each time I can choose a scenario but as soon as I confirm it gives me the following error:

Cannot locate the CD

Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart the application.

This is a load of crap. The CD-ROM is drive E:, the autoplay even loads up when I start the CD so it knows darn well where the CD is. Is it because my player is a CD burner as well? Ah geez, now I'm just clutching at straws, this is frustrating.

Try there, that's usually where I start my patches searches for older games. I downloaded those files almost 3 years ago so I can't remember exactly where I downloaded them from. I don't recall exactly but you might end up having to use the German mirror to download. The Germans seem to be the only ones maintaining really old game download sites for patches....

Also, no I didn't change anything other than the installation method as I told you above. It was set from setup for Win98 mode.

I just loaded West Front again and it loaded like a charm. I'm running 1024x768 and 32bit color. I must say the GRAPHICS I forgot how much better they were than SPWAW, wow, I must start playing this one again.

I do remember I had issues getting mine to work until I downloaded that patch. I usually muck with a game that doesn't work on XP till I get it to work, but, I can't for the life of me figure out why "Age of Rifles" won't give me sound. All the settings are correct and heck I got "Master of Magic" to work on XP and that's a DOS 15 year old game and WITH SOUND! lol

Also one last thing, you could just get "Eagle Strike" from HPS, it's more or less a WF update and plays pretty much identical.

Hi All,

I had a few problems with installing my East Front game, but I solved them. Never got any CD errors however. What I did was install East Front from the disk then patched with the 1.08A patch (*Make sure you get the one that does not include the campaing expansion CD.) The game was good to work then, but the battlefield was all messed up graphically. The change for me was to reduce my screen color to 16 bit. After that all has been fine. I did not mess with any XP compatibility issues, I juet left stuff where it was.

Thanks,
Duncan

Grrrr! <hurling CD out window> I don't suppose anyone knows how to run these games without the CD? I seem to recall copying all the files to my hard drive a long time ago and getting it to work.

Thanks for the link Jason. My problem seems very similar to that of PhilVet. I'll try to change my CD letter and reinstall (though E: should be good). I've been trying patch 1.06, which you don't recommend, so I'll look for 1.05 and give that a go.

I'll let you know if those changes do the trick after I get home from work. Only six more hours until I try again <crossing fingers>.

Woohoo!!

Jason, I could kiss you. I got West Front up in running and I'm in the midst of kicking the allies out of Crete - brilliant. I think the 1.06 patch was the root of my problems. Hopefully East Front will work too... once I get around to installing it. Thank you, thank you.

If anyone else has the same issue, here's what I did for WF (essentially following Jason's advice from his thread in post #9 step-by-step):

1. Completly uninstalled WF.
2. Instead of installing via autoplay, I opened the CD and set the compatibility on the setup icon to Win 98 (as per ravinhood's advice). Not sure this was a needed step but it didn't hurt. I then installed the game to its default directory (mine was C:\Program Files\Talonsoft\West Front).
3. Jason's patch link from his thread in post #9 didn't seem to work so I went to the following to get the US 1.05 patch:
ftp://209.164.73.216/pub/patches/campaign_series/ (mentioned in the thread from the link in post #1).
4. Downloaded the patch to my desktop. Unzipped the contents to the same folder. Selected all the unzipped files and manually placed them into the West Front folder.
5. Ran the game and started a new campaign (in my case an LCG). I made sure to save the campaign in the West Front folder as oppossed to "My Documents."
6. Watched the campaign kick off, arched my fingers and said, "Excellent."

Now to find a way to lower the SFX volume so I can run Windows Media Player in the background.

Cheers all and happy gaming.

Sin,

If you get around to installing East Front (I not II) it can be tricky to find the V1.08a patch. I finally found it via some finnish download site I think. If you can't find it let me know, maybe I can post it somewhere for you. Oh, if you have the EF expansion disk, it won't work anyhow, you will need the other V1.08 patch.

Suggestion for Matrix:
How about hosting patches for the old versions of the Campaign series until you publish the Matrix addition. (Which I hope will be soon.)

Thanks,
Duncan
