i've been tweaking with the player ratings. i've got a couple of questions about player ratings and what they affect. if someone could answer them it would be appreciated.

1) what player ratings come into play when calculating interceptions? i.e. catching is one, but how about the intelligence rating or the coverage rating.. do they come into play? any others?
2) discipline; besides penalties, what else does this rating affect? i.e does it affect a player's ability to run precise pass routes, etc.
3) intelligence; would this have an effect on running back's ability to pick an open rushing hole?
4) hands; does this affect other things besides fumbles? i.e. a player's ability to "get his hands in there" and tip a pass away?

thanks

These questions are not being ignored, but only David can answer them, and he is quite busy as one could imagine.

Some of these may actually be changed in what they do slightly as the AI improves.

What would you like the stats to do?  What would you have Hands do?

oh i know they're not igonored. David's got a lot on his plate.

and this is minor issue, i think. mainly affects perhaps, for a lack of a better phrase, general manager strategy.

the hands ratings for defensive backs at first glance seemed to be very close to a reciever's.
the thinking behind this may go something like this:

my team needs a reciever, and i have a defensive back who i would like to convert to a reciever.
which can happen in real-life (i.e like position swapping in Madden).
if i have a db i can convert, then i don't need to trade, draft one, or sign one as a free agent. saves me picks or money, etc.

now when i do this the ratings of the converted db as he becomes a reciever should i guess be somehwat lower than a regular fulltime reciever. i.e there is a penalty for the conversion of the db.

so in other words, the simulation of converting a db to reciever is the thinking here.

thx for the reply

1. Coverage and Catching (Defense) effect the chance for an interception. In the manual you find

How close a defender gets to a receiver is determined by his Coverage SA. A high SA will have the defender within
a yard or so of the receiver. A low SA can see him as far away as fi ve yards. A low SA means more completions
but far fewer pass interference calls.
When the ball is thrown the closest defender to the target will, depending on his Coverage SA, either break on the
ball and try to knock it down, or simply wait for the receiver to make the catch then tackle him. If a defender is too
far away from the ball to knock it down he’ll simply go after the receiver.
Any time the defender can knock the ball down there is a chance he could catch it. The chance of a defender
intercepting the ball is based on his Catch SA and random chance.

2. When you convert a DB in a WR then is there no penalty. But i think a DB generated by the game has a lower catching rating than a regular WR so have a similar effect.

In the real world, there is more than just physical ability to consider when converting a player; there are many position skill changes as well.  Most games cannot reflect those skills changes.

Some computer leagues that allow position changes will give the player a penalty for a period to reflect the transition.  Some leagues do not allow drastic position changes at all.
