I read in one of these sights that as a newbie I should set the comps ai at 30. What does increasing the ai # do. Does it give the computer better dice rolls or harder to kill. Or, as I hope, does it cause the computer to use better tactics?

It allows it to cheat more. It DOES NOT affect its intelligence ( or lack there of)

The key to playing the AI is keeping your core forces relatively historical. The best human vs AI matchup is the USMC vs Japan, as the strength of the Japanese helps offset the AI's weaknesses, especially in the attack. Once the war transitions into the "fortify and fight to the death" phase, it gets much tougher.

As the Marines, you start in the fetid jungles of the Solomons and elsewhere for the first five or six battles. Afterwards, it becomes a succession of D-Days from mid-1943 onwards. It is essentially two different wars, but it's a slugging match all the way, with two heavyweights going toe -to - toe.

What Erwin said is correct. USMC vs. Japan is as good a challenge as you'll get against the computer.

Do NOT set the AI Level to 30 if you are a new player. Setting the AI Level to anything except XXX increases the AI effectiveness. Leave the AI Level at XXX until you can beat the computer regularly.
