Hi Andy,

Personally I think you just surprised him by the audaciousness of it. As he said he was only 1 day away from reinforcing it so it was already in his plans to build it up. You just beat him to the punch.

I am not sure what the requirements are to activate the Kamikazes (too lazy to look it up) but if they have been activated, it will be interesting to see if they have any better luck penetrating your CAP. Supposedly they are supposed to be more accurate in making their attacks than with bombs but accuracy doesn't matter much for a plane on the bottom of the ocean.

I hope it was surprise !!!!

OK I have the next 2 turns combat replays but I am at work so I cannot post them.

I did shoot down 300+ aircraft for a about 70 losses what was interesting is that of the losses the Japanese suffered only 50 were 1st class aircraft in the air and the losses in A2A were 1 for 1 if you consider only Jacks, Georges and Franks v Corsairs, Hellcats and P38's. Over 100 Oscars and Zekes were destroyed as well but worryingly for any allied player in a PDU game Franks, Georges and Jacks were remarkably resiliant !!!!!

On day 2 I raided a number of bases but Zamboanga was swamped by a massive raid which shut down the AF and allowed some Judy's to put 4 bombs into Miami

My TF en route to Wasile where it will fuel up re organise and head in. THIS operation is not the smash and grab that the last few have been !!!!!

As I am out for beer tonight I am unsure if I will get a turn back tonight but if I do I will post a deployment plan for my Carriers.

Today PZB managed to get his suicide planes to launch. The crippled Miami and a DD went under.

Not good.

Zamboanga is shut from the air.

I am probably going to to re order the fleet a little.

At present the fleet is configured for a Marianas style invasion and I need to adjust to the new operational plan.

i.e. Less transports as I am not trying to land as many troops, remove Battleships from Bombardment TF's into SCTF and increase number of escort carrier TF's to allow supply convoys to be well escorted.

I will also unload 1 of the assault Corps at Wasile and reload after they have had some R&R as they have been on board ships for three weeks now.

I also need to work out if I really need all the carriers I have available I would relly like to refit 2 or 3 more in addition to the 3 currently in yard hands at SF/PH.

OK the TF's are refueling at Wasile I will be sending several carriers back in soon to try and destroy enemy aircraft before my transports go in.

I am also LRCAPING Zoamboga now from Tomini which has hit lvl 2

I destroyed a lot of transports on the AF more he needs to produce

OK guys my carriers are moving into positin south of Zamboanga and my transports with 3rd Corps are starting to gather off of Wasile.

NOTE Anyy Allied players out there not only am I out of Hellcats but now the USN Pilot pool has ran out....thats right unless I stop attacking for 2 months in order to train pilots the way the Japanese do i will have 30xp pilots flying my planes for the rest of the war.

PDU's are going to completely screw the ability of the allies to do anything in 44/45

Enemy concentration at Davao sending in the heavies to exploit it escorted by P38's I dont want my carrier planes to join in as I need to preserve the pilot pool and I cannoit afford losses.

(Its weird the USN being so sensitive to losses of fighters and pilots)

I need to be very carefull here guys.

The crop of navy pilots currently on my CVR's are the last of my trained pilots. I lost to many pilots and planes in the Marianas campaign USN pilot avaialability is going to be a MAJOR issue from now on even more so than the empty Hellcat pool.

I need to eliminate the threat of Kamis to allow the Borneo invasion to proceed or else I will need to postpone everything for a month to perform some pilot training of my own.

If I can get the Bornoe TF ashore in one piece then LB AF's in the area will allow forward deployment of P38's and P47's and allow my carriers to withdraw.

I am setting a limit I will allow 400 more USN casualties (being the trained pilots currently on my CVR's) if I suffer more casualties than that eliminating the threat from Kamikazes then I will withdraw and rest for at least 4 weeks.

Amazing that it is the USN that is running out of pilots !!!!

That is amazing. I would never have imagined that it would be the USN to run out. PDU is certainly a double-edged sword.

This isnt PDU in PDU it is going to be a lot worse with no oscars or zekes every IJA Gp will be Tonies/Tojos or Franks

Every IJN (non Carrier) will be in Georges or Jacks.

I think PDU may be impossible for the allies in 44

Anyway time will tell

In a game where India isn't captured, I would think it would be possible for the Allies to set up some training areas in Burma in 43. Plus with PDU's it is easier to train in obsolete planes and then upgrade to frontline units once the pilots are trained up.

Can you some set up some training units on Kavieng or some of those bypassed bases in PNG?

But at what a cost........

Today my fleet ran straight into a KB that I thought was still in yard hands.

PZB is reinvading Zamboanga and managed to get a lot of troops ashore. My Carriers ignored the trasnports and attacked the Pheonix like KB sinking (I hope 5 Carriers and a CVL) but his heavy surface units are unscathed and despite losing a lot of aircraft I lost c 250 USN pilots.

Zamboanga is lost unless I divert the Borneo invasion force and I suspect they cannot get there in time so I will go on to Borneo.

I have to expect that Zamboanga will be taken by the Japanese a la Kai Island.

I have never been so depressed over a crushing victory.

I will stay with my initial drop dead line if I lose 150 more pilots then Borneo/ Singapore and West PI will be undertaken only via Land Based Air Cover which will greatly slow down the move forward.

Obviously my Hellcat pool is empty again as well but it is pilots that worry me.

The losses I suffered at the marianas plus those I am suffering here make me very depressed.

The USN has been bled white and with only 60 replacement pilots a month I am unsure how I will be able to progress in 45.

I will say this a deep strike against Hainan or Formosa is OFF and I am reconsidering the Singapore op. I must advance under LBA cover.

God only knows how the allies are expected to attack if PDU's were in operation and it was Tonies/Tojos and Jacks instead of Zekes and Oscars.

I suspect that PZB thinks the loss of 5 carriers is a disaster but while a tactical defeat I think this battle is at best a strategic draw.

I expect Zamboanga to fall tomorrow and I am withdrawing my Carriers a little to screen the TF's heading towards Borneo.

I should be happier than this to sink 5 Carriers

Well what a turn I forgot to stand down my bombers and they went in to sink 2 Jap CVE's ..... the pilot and plane losses were not worth it.....

I lost another 150 USN pilots today so I am right on the edge of go/no go.

I have decided to GO although I accept this may be the wrong decison.

One CVE actually sank and a 2nd will sink tomorrow fortunately I managed to get the air group off of the carrier that will sink today. The damaged CVE's Wildcats will be used on my Fleet Carriers.

Yup thats right folks Wildcats are going back on USN Fleet Carrirs as its the only way to have any fighters at all I have plenty of F4U1D's but only three sqns of USN able to take them.

My CVR's managed to avoid damage and they will suffice to bring my fleet carriers up to about 90% of complement of aircraft and 100% on pilots but thats it the cupboard isa now bare.

I have plenty of Marine pilots but I am out of USN ones and all the pilots I will get next will be 30 xp ones. I need options folk any bright ideas ?

The only one I have is to start using Marine F4U1D Sqns on carriers but I am not sure thats fair on PZB despite the fact that the F4U1D is now officially carrier operatable. I had been avoiding using F4U1D Marine Sqns on Carriers as it causes a lot of ill feelings in 43 not sure if that should apply in late 44 before I raise it with PZB I would like opinions ?

Andy

OK some more info.

I have 3 Unused Hellcat Sqns with about 110 fighters they are in the Marshalls where it was intended to rotate them onto my carriers I will need to redeploy them ASAP to the front.

In additoin Saratoga is at Pearl in refit with 40, Yorktown and Intrepid are on the West Coast with Bellau Wood with about another hundred F6F's.

I get Hangkock in 15 days and Randolph in 45 so that will give me 5 refitted or new build fleet carriers to reinforce operations but at least 5 att he front now will need a months yard time soon I am running my fleet hard.

The CVR's have about 150 Hellcats and enough pilots

The pool has 48 in it but no pilots.

Overall the situation is not good

Hi Andy,

I've been following this awhile with interest, though this is the first time I've chimed in.

IRL, Marine Corsairs were flying off carriers sometime in 1944 (I'm not sure what month) and by Feb 45 at least 8 Marine corsair squadrons were on CVs & (mainly) CVEs. IIRC they were particularly intended to combat the kamikazes. I personally don't think it would be unfair at the date you are, particularly with kamikazes already active and the F4U1D in production. However I agree - certainly raise the issue with PzB first as there's no sense in creating ill-will.

Four Marine Composite Airgroups were training for deployment aboard escort carriers to provide close air support for Operation Downfall.

What date did the USN start using USMC Corsairs on carriers? If you are past that date then it is historical. I do agree, as a Jap fanboy, that it would be a nasty turn of events but history is history. I just wouldn't want to see them onboard every carrier in the fleet. Plus, aren't the USMC pilots only carrier capable, not carrier trained? If so, your ops losses will go up.

Still, even though your USN pilot pool is empty, 60 replacement pilots a month is far better than the 10 PzB gets. If those trained pilots are mixed in with neophytes, you should be able to train them rather fast using operational missions. PzB has many bases with substantial forces on them that would be perfect for training and and at the same time reduce his troop's effectiveness to the point that you might be able to begin eliminating them in time.

Just my thoughts,

Chez

EDIT: My source indicates that the F4U-1D began carrier operations in November, 1944.

Dates vary but it was late autumn I think so we are not past the date.

10 Sqns were assigned to operate off of Essex class carriers to support the fleet in ops around the Phillipines in response to Kamikaze threat so arguably since Kamis are active I should be able to use them and yes Operational losses were very high.

Re Pilot replacement while I agree training is possible I will not use it. I accept that my Japanese opponents will in order to make the game interesting but as the allies I refuse 100% to send sqns onto ground attack missions to make them better dogfighters if it happens as a side effect of genuine ground attack missions I will live with it but to organise training "schools" on ground attack is the ultimate in gamey to me.

Given that when on ops and winning I lose 200 pilots a day against hordes of Chinese trained pilots 60 are not enough to keep up with losses but I will overcome somehow. I will need to put all sqns in rear areas onto the training mission ASAP and hope it gets them to a reasonable size quickly. (P.s. including newly arrived carriers I am probably getting 150+ per month as all my new carriers arrive with experienced pilots - I assume....)

Anyway I dont have the time remember I am on a clock here and I dont have enough sqns that I can divert so to train that way I would need to shut down my carriers for 2 months its just not feasible.

Actually the F4U1D airframe pool is not in great shape either so I doubt it would help much anyway

But any dreams of a USN roaming around the sealanes is a fantasy I am going to have to grind forward. The last few months have proven that the USN cannot operate independently (now in most games this wont be so much of an issue the no. 1 job of the RAF in all my games from now on is closing down the jap training schools in China - this is probably the number 1 stategic objective of the China theatre for me from now on !!!!)

It seems that production system is somewhat off. Too bad about those Hellcats pools being depleted I mean you will so many squadrons to feed even in carriers not take in consideration of LBA Hellcats.

I thought this game would simulate the hardship for the Japanese side in later years but... anyway at least KB is dealt with and that is excellent news for the allied player.

Also I do agree 100% that it is not easy to control sealanes even at 1944 with your navy.

Can you still push forward? You are in a bad shape, but I doubt he is all fine and well too..

Your transport fleets seem to be so close to Borneo, and from Tarakan you can strike into the east china sea.

When do you get P51`'s? Their performance should be quite equal to corsairs + they have incredible range. And you should have accumulated a massive USAAF pilot pool and you get an additional 200 per month no?

I think part of the problem is you stop accumulating pilots after you double your production. So if you have 200 per month you stop getting any more once you reach 400.

OK now I'm thinking that's for air frame production, not pilots... sigh guess I shouldn't post at 2 AM I can't think too clearly. Either way one or the other stops accumulating and it creates a bottle neck that simply breaks the system given the massive casualties it creates in air combat.

Japan is able to tweak their production numbers so they have double, triple or quadruple the monthly production of air frames the allies have. What we are witnessing in this game is the effect that has overall. Mid 1944 and Japan is STILL out producing the allies.

Where are all the Japanese players who told us their low experienced pilot pools would be the end of them and the allies would have nothing to fear by this time in the game?

As I've said in the past you need to feed the monster to make it work. If you lack enough equipment to feed it, it simply breaks your game. The allies need WAY more production in this game, forget historical production figures they just hamstring the allies because of the massively high non-historic losses everyone suffers. We need to triple production at a minimum for the allies. That goes for pilots too of course.

Jim

I think you have good points Jim. One of my game is in Mid 1944 too againts FDR. I think Japanese have an edge since they can produce the amounts they need or want.

As for RHS mod. Well just started a game againts Nemo! I'am already pretty much out of fighters and bombers. Replacement rates are so slow that I'am stuck with flying dead coffins. Needlesly to say it is not too much fun.

Yeah, all the time we hear that allied replacement rates should be historical and need tweaking. But what about the Japanese? I mean they can outproduce you with good fighters and bombers. Historically that a laughable since they were struggling from mid 1943 onwards.

After six months worth of airframes have accumulated in the pool the production stops.

Lack of Hellcats is annoying but I can live with running out of pilots well that is serious in all honesty the thought of PDU's in 44/45 scares me silly.

I have P51B's in the pool at presetn but nothing upgrades top them.

In reality its my operational tempo thats killing me the last time I really paused was 5 months ago. Even the alllies cannot keep up continuos ops.

After the landings in south Borneo I suspect I willl need to stand down for 2 months. Its irritating but I dont think I have a lot of choice. Zamboanga falls as expected all credit to PZB a counter invasion in 44 is a thing of beauty forthe Japs.

p.s. remember that I am only getting about 30% of the historic Hellcat production so the airframe issue while real is a game issue (I still accumulate 144 unusable nightfighter variants per month) but that discusssion has been had already 144 Hellcats is not enough but we are stuck with this low production level for this game so be it.

I suspect the pilot issue is more because of the strategic situation where the USN is having to take on the bulk of the effort.

I now bitterly regret even attempting the Marianas as it emptied my pilot pool.

Just to give an example of scale every time I fill up a CVR to support the fleet I use up 8 weeks worth of USN Pilot production  you know this isnt like it is Iwo or Okinawa where I am attacking the Jap heartland this is the Phillipines for gawd sake where my LBA can lend a hand.

Anyone who thinks attacking the homeland in a PDU game with these levels of replacements is kidding themselves on. I am killing thousands of Zekes and Oscars imagine they are Tojos, Tonies, Georges and Jacks and be afraid be very afraid.
