Coming back to the game after discarding it for a couple of years. So I'm patched up to 1.8 and I'm still not happy with the air combat model. And I spot a mod done by Big B and decide to give it go. Some quick testing indicates that the air combat model might be very good and I figure, for the amusement of the community, an AAR against the AI by someone who might as well be a total n00b to the game might be of interest.

The AI is not allowed to read this thread. In return I will not look at his situation on reloads.

Details of Big B's mod are found here.
I'm playing with Andrew Brown's extended map, scenario 15 version of Big B's mod, every single switch to green in every single option available before starting the game (eg surprise on, 'historical' first turn etc).

The AI doesn't mind playing without house rules. So I haven't made any but I will try to play reasonably historically and in a manner most human opponents would find acceptable.

One final thing is that at some point in the next week my internet gets cut off for around a month (swapping ISPs is fun in the UK when they mess up the changeover dates). So there may be a period of quiet.

Oh and feel free to contribute - especially with production ideas and general tips and thoughts.

7th December, 1941.

And so it begins....

The KB paid a little visit to Pearl Harbour today.

Results were decent if not spectacular. It would seem that the US commander is hiding his CVs so we'll have to go find them after refuelling. And then we'll sink them and then we'll resupply and then we'll...

No reports of any of those ships sinking as of dawn of the eighth but I'm thinking that at the very least the US battleships will be out of action for 6 months or so. More than enough time to make hay in the pacific.

The Philipines

Not overly impressed by the number of planes destroyed on the ground but such is life. Perhaps the US have dispersed their airforce?

Singapore

The raid on Singapore by my Nell force can perhaps best be described as disappointing. But once I get an airfield within Zero and Nate/Oscar range of there, that place is going to be plastered. For the moment, I'm tempted to just put the Nells on naval attack in case the Britishers come out to play with my invasion fleets.

Other news of any note

Both Batan and Wake fell to the glorious forces of Japan today with nearly 3000 prisoners taken. The coastal of artillery at Wake did upset the IJN high command by planting 10 shells on the AK Kongo Maru (on fire), 7 on CL Yubari,
8 on AP Kinryu Maru (on fire) and even worse the 7 shells which caused heavy damage to the DD Mutsuki. Hopefully, the brave little thing can be saved. Meanwhile the captain of the Haruna is repainting his deck after a Blenheim I accidentally dropped a cargo of fresh eggs on his ship. Who would have thought that the eggs would bounce leaving just a scratch? Air cover obviously was not a priority of the previous head of the Japanese war effort.

Aircraft losses today are:

A20B - 5 ground
B-17D Fortress - 3 ground
B-17E Fortress - 4 ground
B-18A Bolo - 20 ground
Buffalo I - 7 ground

P-36A Mohawk - 3 air, 23 ground
P-40C Tomahawk - 6 air, 44 ground
P-40E Warhawk - 5 air, 17 ground
PBY Catalina - 39 ground
SBD Dauntless - 13 ground
Vildebeest IV - 7 ground

B5N Kate - 7 flak
D3A Val - 7 flak
G3M Nell - 7 air
Ki-30 Ann - 1 flak
Ki-51 Sonia - 3 flak

No ships have been reported sunk.

Japanese Sigint

There seem to be Russians at Vladivostok and Chinese in China.

-------------------------------

So what next for Japan? I've spent the past 9 hours planning out the first darned player move. What about production should I follow the standard plan of coverting the Ishi, Niss and Kawa engine plants to Naka engines? Should I halt production of the Nell?

Do I prep for my invasions or go for speed in taking out the SRA? How much effort should I put into taking the Philipines? Can I not just tie down the allied forces there and let them wither on the vine which allows me to bypass them and get at the Dutch?

Should the KB sail for another area or would a cruise down the east coast of the US be of more utility to freak out the US and cripple its supply lines to Pearl and Oz?

And how many AKs do I need to convert? And what should they be converted into? I've 1000 minelayers and not a single MLE but I also need ADs and ARs... How many can I convert on the first turn without running into problems?

So many questions, so many decisions to make. It's a wonder this game ever makes it to the Allied player for the first turn. Fortunately the AI is patient.

Great minds

So the planning is finally over. Thank God! I'll do a few posts on each area's long term planning. One thing to bear in mind is that I'm not going for a killer victory - I want to test out the air model more than anything, not beat up our very special friend the AI.

Let's start with the 'easiest' (planning wise)active area first. China.

http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?image=chinarq8.gif

Big B's mod notes say that he's added the equivalent of 130 divisions to China's OOB () but that most of them are static unless attacked and forced to retreat. So it seems to me that the most sensible things to do from the get-go are:
1) Get the garrisons of cities sorted out.
2) Establish a solid front line with no gaps from Swatow to Yangku.
3) Crush any Chinese units cut off and behind my lines.
4) Nibble away at the Chinese cities by encircling them before I attack them.

I'll transfer over the complete Kwantung airforce and approximately 1000 assault points worth of troops to help out in China. So I'll be saving up my political points like a good boy to do that. I also need to pay the political cost for the Southern Area division which is in China. I've moved it away from the coast so it's a bit gamey not change its command.

My first target is to take Hong Kong. Once that is taken then I can move along the coastal cities to get a continuous land route to Burma.

Troops have also been set aside for two other initial objectives once the front line is secure - Yenan and Ichang. Once those two cities are secure I can wrap up the southern part of China and also start pushing towards Sian.

If I beat China then the Chinese forces will be moved on to India. If I get bogged down, then I guess they won't be going anywhere

Malay Peninsula and Burma

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8403/malayaus9.gif

As always, the objectives are Rangoon to the North and Singapore to the South. Everything else is just a waystation to get to them. I'm not interested in pushing into India until much later on in the game so only minimal forces will be invading Burma initially. I'm not even particularly concerned if they pull up short of Rangoon - as long as they mask any British troops up in the jungles.

As you can see from my groovy red lines, a lot of thought has gone into this.

The only solution to Singapore is lots and lots of divisions. So that's what I'm sending in. Roughly 6 divisions in the Malay peninsula, all of them converging on Singapore once the other British bases there are taken. Almost all the Southern Area army will be at Singapore with the exceptions of those units which start from Taiwan or are already prepped for an assault on the Phillipines. Once I've got Singapore then the rest of the SRA can be mopped up quickly in conjunction with the small forces who are even now preparing to take out the British and Dutch bases on the Northern Coast of Borneo.

A mini-KB will help cover the invasion fleets alongside the Kongo/Haruna task force and the cruiser flottillas already in the area. But it's LBA all the way in this part of the world for me. Lots and lots of Nells to try and keep the Dutch and British fleets quiet.

The Philipines

http://img93.imageshack.us/my.php?image=philipinessd2.gif

Luzon first with landings from Palau area behind it. I want Manilla taken quickly so my LBA can start moving forward from Taiwan/Batan/Luzon. All the initial units prepped to go will go to their initial objectives. Troops from Taiwan will end up in Luzon too. I might throw more into the fray if Manilla proves to be too tough but as long as I can cut it off from supply it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Support will come from the 5 battleships I'm sending into this area, the cruiser led fleets already here and a tiny little single CV taskforce who will play whack-a-mole with the fleeing transports and any Dutch fleet which thinks of poking its nose in the waters south of the Philipines.

After the Philipines the Southern Area army here will press on to the SW (as the witp map looks onscreen) into the Dutch territories. I'm debating whether or not to hit Oz but we'll see what kind of a fight the AI puts up. Resources first, then fun.

Centpac

http://img221.imageshack.us/my.php?image=centpacnd8.gif

With Wake taken, I'm going to play conservatively here. I may go for Midway eventually but for the moment I want the Solomon's and Port Moresby more.

So I'm going to circle the wagons for a few months in this area - the only immediate offensive operations planned are for Tarawa and Nauru. Once they are taken, the focus switches to building up for a while. Big interlocking air bases with lots of torpedo bombers ready for 1943.

From Truk, I need to take Rabaul and Kavieng quickly. The troops are prepping and the invasion will be leaving as soon as they are ready. Naval assets will not be great but the KB will eventually find itself back in this area supported by a couple of cruiser flottillas and possibly the Kongo group should I get rid of the British big ships quickly enough.

Northern Area

I may eventually get round to pushing along the Aleutian islands but for the moment, there's not really much point doing anything other than setting up a base just to cover the area. It's a backwater for me offering nothing I want in the near future. If I get to 1943 with all targets met then I'll consider an invasion of the US just for kicks. But New Zealand and Oz are better targets and I'd rather have the US come at me than try to grind them down in the continental USA.

8th December 1943

It's always anticlimactic when you process the second turn after all the hours of planning. Mostly the day was spent loading troops and supplies onto transports, setting targets and arranging cover.

Highlights of the day are the three bases on Luzon in Japanese hands. Guam also fell to my unbeatable forces. Little air activity due to bad weather.

Sadly, I-124 was sunk today by destroyers operating out of Manilla. However, the Nagara led destroyer group did manage to sink a lone tanker, as well as damaging several other merchant vessels as they fled the Phillipines. The Ryujo's Kates did drop some bombs on a lone allied cargo ship, but we fear that it has not been damaged sufficiently enough to sink.

The KB will meet up with it's tankers next turn. Submarines are converging on large numbers of ships fleeing Pearl Harbour and heading east at very slow speeds. The enemy carriers have not yet been located.

One more air raid on Clark Field and then I'll start on the other air bases on Luzon. No idea where the US planes are hiding although the Bolos seem to be operating from one of the islands south of Luzon. The poor Ryujo keeps getting the most dreadful frights.

Really not a lot happening on the frontlines. The REMFs are being overworked instead.

Stockpiles are heading off to Palau, Truk and Kwajalein. Lots of troops boarding ships all over the map to head to the theatres of operation as well as supplies to keep them there. The Japanese merchant fleet is spread all over the map and gradually gathering together at key points for runs back to Osaka to go into the convoy system.

I played a little with the production system. Turned the Gumma Nate factory into Zeros, switched off Nell production and switched some engine production about to boost Nakajima for my frontline fighters.

Auto-pilot is well and truly engaged at the moment. On the brightside, the KB should meet its replenishment taskforce today which means I can try to prod the AI into action soon.

The extra troops to deal with Hong Kong also arrived today. Which means I can start reducing the horrid little place which sucks up so many troops to take efficiently.

For some reason I've got troops landed on the little beach of Makin. They managed to take it too against no opposition. Bravo!

Getting a little annoyed with the attacks on my shipping from Malaya. But until I get the base forces over there then I've only got one unit of Zeros who can provide LRCAP. Might have to lower my bombing altitude a bit to ramp up some hits on the airbases but we'll see how close those pesky Britishers get with their bombs - if they hit me repeatedly from 12000+ feet in a level bomber then really there is no hope for this game.

Well, the good news is that Japanese intelligence learnt that AK Taurus has been sunk by the Ryujo's Kates. The bad news would be that 2 Bolos managed to sneak through Ryujo's CAP and land a 500lb through the flight deck. Sneaky.

The Ryujo was busy spanking the transports fleeing Luzon, its Kates putting torpedoes into several but forgot that shooting down those B-18As would be a good thing to do... Fortunately, damage should be light enough to see the ship back to port.. sys damage 39, float 5, fire 12 and 3 days sailing to Palau from the Celebdes Sea. Goes to show that LBA in this mod should not be underestimated. Especially when your CAP is Claudes

On the plus side the Bolos morale must be shot to pieces and the invasion fleets for that part of Luzon are just about to arrive. Don't think they've been spotted yet, so there's hope they might get ashore without too much bother. Sorry, what do you mean air cover and I should have kept Ryujo back to do that?

Haruna and Kongo played with more LBA from Singapore today. A couple of hits on them but the 500lb bombs barely scratch the paintwork. When I start to spot torpedo carrying planes, they get pulled out

Other news is that the two transports and the poor Mutsuki are hanging on at Wake. But it's not looking good at a level 1 port. Aid is coming in the form of a naval HQ but it's still a few days away.

The KB refuelled this turn and spotted some nice juicy targets it is about to intercept. The enemy CV force is now known to be at Pearl Harbour. The slaughter of the submarine launched Glens hinted at that but Lexington was identified.

SS Sculpin had some misfortune today too. Its torpedoes failed to explode. Sadly my destroyers off Luzon failed to find it so everyone went home happy.

Looks like the attack at Khota Baru has stalled as well. My own fault for not shock attacking on the 9th but I'm trying to wait for the forces who will close the bases just to the north of Singapore to arrive. I really don't want to drive even more defenders into the fort. The 5th division is now fully ashore and is now advancing on Alor Star.

Ouch!
Just a quick side note - the only thing I did to Ryujo was - strengthen it (add a little durability)

This is good reading - continue

Going back to Pearl without the element of surprise, eh?

No guts, no glory! -----but remember, a posthumous Navy Cross usually goes along with the G&G.

Great read!

Thanks very much for doing this AAR. I am very interested in this mod so will enjoy watching. I am particularly keen to see how China plays out. The AI is not very aggressive in China, so I would imagine that as long as you take your time the extra troops will just mean more loss points. Has the China supply been increased to cope with the extra forces? The stock game did not have enough even for the few troops available.

EDIT: I have moved this discussion to the Scenario Design area under the B Mod thread
