Yesterday I took some time to read through parts of the COG manual. I came to realise that a good understandings of the game mechanics is absolutely essential in order to really appreciate this game. The more I read about it (and also play it of course) the more I like it. After having read through the combat section of the manual I came up with a couple of questions. Is there some more detailed information available for example on formations and facing specifically related to COG? I’d like to clarify a couple of questions. For example in most napoleonic era wargames attacking with your cavalry the flanks of on infantry unit that is deployed in line formation can have absolute devastating effects. When I tried this in COG to my surprise the attacked unit remained relatively stable. I also found it quite surprising that cavalry fire power was quite effective in decimating infantry in square formation. It would be helpful to have a list of all sorts of combat modifiers that go into formation an facing. Since I’m at it – one more question. What would be the best formation to defend villages, buildings? According to my knowledge it has to be some kind of skirmish formation since it is the only formation that can efficiently make use of cover. But then again what kind of skirmish.. detached from line or column??? Are there any detailed hints, tips, tables out there on these issues or did I overlook something in the manual? Many thanks in advance...

Flanking, formation, and facing do confer modifiers in combat.  These bonuses are not as large as in some Napoleonic systems because in COG the battles are fought on the division level whereas many other systems are for the regimental level to which larger modifiers are more appropriate.

In the old format of the manual, the combat bonuses are outlined in section 5.8.  I'm not sure whether this is the same section in the new manual or not.  Some of the bonuses are described only in general terms; in these cases it's because the actual bonuses would require a much more complicated explanation than the other bonuses.

Skirmish order is probably the best way to defend village hexes.
