Oh its definitley a hit then fade away more of a progression of destruction than anything else and because I wont have transports I can move 7 hexes a day so it will be hard to stop....

Guys there is one other alternative I could consider......

Now this would be seriously risky and would push the boundaries a little so honestly tell me what you think.

I have c 10 Divisons of 1st Australian Army prepping for Malaya at Darwin with its nice shipyard all c 50% prep at mo for Singers or Johore.......

Now if I only sent units > 10 sys to the West Coast and held the others at Rabaul and held back my other units and brought Hangkok plus Bellau Wood/Saratoga, Intrepid and Yorktown to rendevous with the others I could probably just about launch the Malaya op in 30 - 40 days.

It would mean I would need to send forces West from Balikapan to capture Bajam wassisname now but it could be done.....

Now I would be taking an operational risk because a lot of units would be 9 or 10 sys at start but I could do it it is very possible......

The upside is it would put me astride his LOC AND that advanced Shipyard would speed up my downtime put 10 AR's a fleet HQ in there and we coulde be onto a winner.

Any thoughts ?

Andy

I see no reason to outrule that operation. So long as you reconned things enough and brought enough supplies to expand the repair yards it would make a good operation...

I think though that you may find it better to exploit without risking major ground fighting ( which would be risked in Malaysia where PzB can bring lots of his divisions from China, Burma etc into play) and hop to northern borneo, taan etc, Formosa and then Japan. Since each of these areas is geographically isolated you wouldn't be risking the sort of major ground war you'd be risking in the Phillipines and Malaysia  and all the airbases would allow you to operate a lot of your army air force ( thus sparing your naval air force which you've run into the ground recently).

This would allow you to neutralise Java and Sumatra and render all his holdings in mainland Asia almost irrelevant ( so long as you have sufficient CAP over your bases) whilst cutting him off from his supplies and making it more difficult for him to shift troops from Phillipines and China back to bolster the Home Islands.

If I were PzB and you invaded Malaysia I'd welcome it as an opportunity to tie down a dozen of your divisions on the Malaysian mainland and thus reduce the strength of all further amphibious operations significantly.

Dividing your forces (especially in WitP) is never a good idea in warfare. Assume the very worst (he knows you're coming and is fully prepared for it) and then ask yourself if you can still carry it off with acceptable losses.

If so then go for it, if not better to take a month long hiccup in operations while your ships refit then to be forced into a six month game breaking delay.

Besides if you take a month or so off, it'll give you some time to train up a new crop of 30 exp naval aviators.

Jim

Sorry to be clear no matter what I will be standing down my fleet for 30 days to rest absorb new pilots and do some training I need to reorganise my sqns if nothing else as they are all mixed up now.

The Singapore option only means I am standing them down for ONLY 30 Days instead of my planned 60 - 90 day refit enforced stand down if I send them all to the West Coast.

My forces have always been split during Hydra 70% of my BB's were in refit, after the abortive attack on Marianas I sent 3 Fleet and one Light CV for refit so I am never operating at full strength, the distance from my main shipyards dictate that logistically it is never possible for the allies to operate 100% strength and keep sys to acceptable levels.

I have ran my carriers hard in the last few weeks/months so a refit is called for the only question is whether it is a quick and dirty or a full west coast job.

p.s. allies cannot upgrade shipyards only the Japanese can do it but my assumption is that Singapore is c 250 now and that it would halve to about 125 on capture so an advanced shipyard bigger than any allied one other than San Fran right at the fornt

9 divisions for Singapore? Is it an urban hex? If so, what if he has 2 divisions there and level 9 forts and prepped 100%? Not sure 9 divisions would be enough then...

I guess from what I see, I would continue to take the rest, if not all, of Borneo. This gives you your "unsinkable" carrier in the middle of his resource centers without having to invade Java and/or Sumatra. You would cut off any transport of supplies, oil, and resources from India/Burma. Base your B-29's and other heavy bombers to knock out his oil/resource and use attrition. Then he doesn't know what targets you may hit next.

Have you thought about sending some of your CV's to the shipyards in Australia/NZ vs the time to go to the WC and back for some of your lesser damaged ships? I assume that most of them have been expanded to max port size and have a few AR's there to help.

Singers is non urban

I think ny59giants is to some extent correct I dont need to commit to any course yet.

3 Corps will take South Borneo

Formidable, Enterprise, Franklin, Bunker Hill, Hornet and Lexington
Bataan, Cabot and Princeton

These 9 Carriers need West Coast Refit

Bennington, Essex, Ticonderoga and Wasp
San Jacinto, Langley, Monterey, Cowpens and Independence

These 9 carriers could probably get by with local refit

Coming out from the West Coast Refit I will have Yorktown, Saratoga, Intrepid and Belleau Wood

New Build I will have Randolph (34 Days) and Hankok (3 Days)

Overall allowing 12 days for transit from West Coast I will have broadly the same carrier strength in 46 days that I had for the Borneo operation so I think I will hold off for 46 days before making a decision as to which way to go I will concentrate on securing Noemfoor and South Borneo for the next 30 days

Reviewing some ground units 3rd Corps operation in South Borneo is the very first operation without ANZAC support as they are all in Darwin prepping for Malaya.

3rd NZ Div lost 2 Bns on Zoamboanga and needs a long refit so I will withdraw it from Wasile at the first opportunity and transport it to Darwin  for a rest.

I am going to attempt another shock attack on Noemfoor because they have to be out of supply by now.

If I can take Noemfoor that will free up another Aussie Div so 3rd NZ and that Div would form 1st Aus Army Reserve for Malaya.

Assuming 3rd Corps can secure all South Borneo I would consider an attack on West Borneo and the Island off of Java to secure a corridor for the assault force of 1st Army to trasit under friendly sies.

11th Airborne Div (2 Glider Regts and a Para Regt) will arrive at Wasile tomorrow and with the rebuilding 503rd Regt and could be used to spearhead this assault operation if required

Change of plan 503rd Para will also be moved to Darwin at earliest opportunity to refit as will my Para Marines of 4th USMC Bn.

1st US Cav Div, a Canadian Division and at least 2 more NZ Bdes will be found to reinforce the Malaya op to give it more weight if I can I will free up a 3rd Corps HQ as well to give it a reserve Corps as I want to take the peninsula quickly that advanced shipyard is figuring more and more in my thoughts I need good current intel on Malaya without giving the game away - any thoughts ?

You could fly a long range B-29 raid from your new Borneo bases against the supply or factory there and add a few recon planes to the attack. But make sure to hit his supply and factories in other bases (Hanoi, Palembang, etc.) as well so as not to spotlight Singapore.

Jim

I think you will need to continue up the west coast of Borneo and use those advance bases for a systematic recon of all the area within range. Think like the Allies in ETO and don't make one particular area a higher priority of recon flights so PzB doesn't know exactly where the hammer will fall.

Good thoughts guys ok I will focus on taking the base at the west end Banja something by ground 3rd Corps will secure Samarinda then leave a blocking force and head West.

B29's can operate from Banja as its SPS 3.

Given I have abandoned Mindano as a target for near future that frees 6th Army for other ops I think 1st US Corps HQ will move over to support the Malaya Op  and will give 1/2 its troops to 1st AMphib and take the rest with it.

Andy,
Can you afford to have those LCU units tied up in Malaya for the long term or to the end of the war?? If I was PzB, I would move LCU's from India to Ragoon via AK/AP and then down the peninsula to enage your forces and prevent you from using them against the Japanese else where. Once you get on the mainland, you move into the area that the Japanese have an advantage in (LCU's). He can afford to send waves of them at you and force you to divert more and more resources to that theater of operations.
At this stage in the war the Allies have the advantage in air power and naval forces. A protracted land combat sequence favors the Japanese.
Just food for thought.

Ground forces are not a problem ny59giants

6th US Army has 3 strong (1st Amphib, US 1st and US 11th) and 1 weak corps (US 14th on Noemfoor)
8th Army has 2 strong corps (5 Amphib on Wasile and US 3rd Corps on South Borneo)
1st Aus Army has 2 Very Strong Corps (1st Aus and ABDA plus will become 3 strong corps when I retrieve Lt Gen Alexander's Burma Corps HQ from China)
10th US Army will have 3 strong corps and 1 weak corps (3 Amphib, 9th US, 10th US and 24th US all prepping for a deep strike in CENTPAC)

A strong Corps for me has 3 - 4 Divs plus Armour, Arty and support a weak has 2 Divs and a very strong has 4 - 6 Div equivalents plus armour and support.

So for example 1st Aus Corps has 4 Aus Inf Divs, 1 Can Inf Div, 1 Ind Aus Bde, 1 NZ Cav Bde and 3 Armoured Regts it is a strong force.

ABDA Corps has 3 Aus Inf Divs, 1 US Cav Div, 2 Aus Cav Divs, 1 Ind NZ Bde, 1 Ind Aus Bde and an Aus Cav Bde plus 3 Armoured Regts

These are strong Corps all prepping for one goal the conquest of Malaya add to them I am trying to free up some Army reserve troops for this op another NZ Inf and Cav Bde and some US armour and at least 1 TD Regt plus a US Para Regt and USMC Para Bn.

Add all of that lot together with Arty/AT/AA and an assault engineer regt plus Base Forces and it is a formidable integrated combination which will be backed by a strong AF basically it should be able to sieze most of Malaya allowing me to threaten the Bay of Bengal and SEA.

Singapore is becoming more and more critical to my plan but any more troops would be overkill

YOu want to take Singapore, then attack Soerbaja. Singapore would be the perfect place to put reinforcements. If PzB reacts to your attack, you win Singapore. If he doesn´t you win Java and you can threaten his supplylines from there.
Just send 2 Corps to Java and keep the rest for Singapore/Malaysia.
There are lots of bases on Java, you should be able to take one and build it to a 3/3 or 4/4 base or even larger to put LBA there.

Hmmmm interesting thought I will look at it tonight.

My only slight concern is it is dragging me further West Singapore is a means to an end because of the shipyard and its strategic position it is not on the direct route to HI so no question it is a diversion allbeit an important one to give me an advanced base.

I will think about it as a diversion it may be worth a small force and it does have some nice B29 ready AF's.

B29's on Singapore (such a pleasant thought !!!!)

I say go for Singapore. The repair yard will be extremely valuable and it will close Java even more effectively when combined with the Borneo invasions.

Is there any 'house rules' in use regarding the garison of India? If there is, it should limit John's response to a Malayan invasion.

Kind regards,

Thomas.

Possibly I am thinking (subject to recon)

1st Army - Singapore
1st Aus Corps - Singapore
ABDA Corps minus certain forces to Sinagpore

Provisional Cav Corps - Johore
1 Aus Cav Div
2 Aus Cav Div
6th Aus Cav Bde
NZ Cav Bde

Sparrow - Alor Star
4th US Para (by sea) - Mersing (on grounds it wont be defended and I can grab an AF early and then use paras as they were meant to be used

OK Its been a busy few days at work

Lots happened

I finally start to make progress at Noemfoor so that is going well I guess supplies are out.

PZB is bring in Transports but I will LRCAP

Several support Transports are hit on the way to Wasile not much I can do about it until I take Noemfoor.

Returning TF's from Borneo got hit by surface TF's in an Escort TF I paid for my Laziness with Richelieu eating a Torpedo.

Action 2 I am annoyed about the AK losses and raids that have gotten through so Superforts will start closing those AF's . Efforts will be taken to destroy enemy AF's in northern NG

Action 3 PZB is reinforcing Noemfoor if I can figure out from where I may use forces now available to land there.

Action 4 Marianas I am getting more and more Carriers in a never ending stream and 10th Army is operational will 4 Corps slowly building up (12 Divs plus Armour) in CENTPAC I dont feel like an invasion straight at Formosa is possible without Malaya and as it turns out Singapore is only a lvl 26 shipyard PZB has not expanded it (strat bombing target list givews the allies 2 much info btw)

So I am reconsidering a late 44 invasion of the Marianas when I have more assault shipping and more carriers but with the intent of keeping it simple i.e. come from deep and land everything in one place ....dont give PZB time to react and re deploy.

Action 5 4 more Superfort Gps just became available that gives me 400 of them I need to find somewhere to use them which means at least severral lvl 5 AF's but preferably lvl 7's need to think this through - Singapore may be the way ahead after all

OK Guys I have a problem I have been operating my TF's with relatively light screens relying on my fighters to protect my Birdfarms

with the new HL kami bullshit attacks and now night naval attacks I need to beef up the screen on all TF's with better AA platforms and I simply dont have them available in the numbers required I am still critically short on CA's and CL's

Any ideas I am at a slight loss as to what to do.
