This morning I had a meeting with regimental hq, and they have decided they want to break the German lines outside of St Lo. As my battalion has been on reserve since the Normandy drops, it was selected to do the job. Weather precludes a drop, so we go in the hard way. We have very little intelligence as to the disposition and strength of the German force. I do know that the ground we have to cross is unfavorable, as it is very open, allowing a long line of sight and plenty of opportunity to cut my men to ribbons. What's worse, our support is limited. Originally, we were to go in with the support of two companies of Medium tanks, along with a healthy dose of artillery fire to cover us. However, a recent counterattack forced the higher ups to send those tanks elsewhere, and told us that "You have bazookas. Use 'em". Inclement weather makes this an even more miserable advance, but gives us some cover, though visibility is still good. It also means that we have no air support. Given our options, and the length of the German line, I had no choice but to adopt a broad front advance. As we are sorely lacking in support, I decided to send a net of all avaliable recon units to establish enemy positions and give an estimate of strength. We do have a number of 8 inch guns at our backs, and I fully intend to wear those bastards out before the day's over. Our recon will be given 10 mins, then the rest of the battalion will begin the advance. Batman, Charger, Dart, and Plymouth companies will form the main line, while Xen company, and our heavy weapons will plug gaps and act as a reserve. Recon units have been ordered to not engage the enemy, and to maintain LOS at any cost until artillery can bed those Jerries down in their rat holes. All Jeeps have been loaded, and if they are forced to deploy, they have orders to not engage with thier .30 cals. I imagine they'll be ignored anyway. Once the main force reaches the recon units, they are to fall back, and take rear guard positions. As expected, within about 7 mins we heard gunfire. Our forward elements came under heavy MG fire from the german positions, but failed to locate anything but one MG-42 and a Panzer of some sort. The coordinates have been relayed, so those targets should be seein some fireworks soon enough. Unfortunately, one of the snipers has been killed. He disobeyed my orders, and opened fire, attempting to drop one of the MG-42's crew. It did not end well...
