I have a quick question on fast transports. The manual lists AP's and AO's as ship types for fast transport missions but when I go to place them into the task force the game will not allow me. Has this been changed in a patch (I did scan the notes but might have missed something). Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Brett

I always use DD's and APD's for fast transports. If I really need lots of troops/supplies in a certain area ASAP then I will include CL's and BB's.
I don't think that AP's,AK's and AO's can be used as fast transports as they are too slow and also take too long to be loaded/unloaded.

Plus the DD's and other "fighting ships" are unloaded at night whereas the AP's,AK's and AO's would have to be unloaded during daylight, enemy bombers would find them a juicy target. So you have to be flying CAP to protect your fleet.

I am using the latest patch 2.42

I hope I could help you a little

I agree: for fast transports, use DDs, APDs, and also DMs and DMSs as well. I know CLs also work, and I think MSWs do also.

Thanks for the reply. I agree they may not be the best type for the mission but the manual lists them as eligible for that type of mission. I guess the game was doing me a favor by not letting me use them.

Do CL's work for the USN as well as the Japanese? American CL's were more like CA's with 6-inch guns, and IIRC didn't have much extra cargo space.

Yep, Allied CL work as Fast Transports. AFAIK they have a similar or slightly less capacity than CA.

Allie CLs also add a little protection for the task force with their ASW float planes.

I'll take every advantage I can get!

Don't forget that you can also use float planes and cargo planes too
bring in troops in tandem with the fast transports too help offsett the
time it takes too sail back and forth, sometimes this makes or breaks an
invasion as you can keep a steady stream of fresh troops coming in every
turn too offset losses.
10 transport subs equals 200+ troops also if a base is close this becomes
effective also, especially if there are large naval forces present..
