I think high exp ships and the advantage of fighting on home turf close to friendly ports is vital Denisonh
Still amazed that these 2 cruisers could stay afloat after taking such a punishment. 3 torpedoes is enough to sink
a battleship....

I just put the Randy fighter bomber in production, 100 units. Will replace my Lily light bomber formations. Strangely
enough production date showed 07/44? Did this happen without me noticing it, or was it pushed forward? It's a while since I stopped producing Lily's, so I converted some Frank factories. The Randy uses Mitsubishi engines which is more numerous in stock.

Theoretical this fighter should almost be a match for the lightning. It carries 2x250 lb bombs, 20 and 30mm cannons and is sturdy and as manouverable as the Frank.

Let me guess: It will be shot down in droves by enemy fighters
Still, does anyone have any experience with Randys? Think I will use it as a bomber interceptor as I got numerous 80 exp Lily
units to convert.

Kawasaki Ki-102 Randy

Only as bomber interceptor. It's not maneuverable and it's not fast. It's sturdy as you said and keep it behind the front lines and go dragon hunting!

I've been using Lilys for ASW duties for quite some time...80 exp bomber interceptors
will come in handy one day!

Relatively quiet, Andy must be planning something really bad.
Hainan has now been reinforced with 2 full divisions and Formosa is a veritable fortress.
I'm also moving troops into Indo China and preparing a defense of Malaya and Northern Borneo.
With massive fortifications, it will require a massive effort to capure any sizeable base in the region.

Still quiet - except from the daily pounding from the air!
Most air activity finds place in Southern Borneo and south of the Philippines.
We're in a transition phase awaiting Andy's next major assault which will take
him further north, one way or the other.

I'm not so worried about were he will strike anymore. The last couple of months have
given me the chance to redeploy our defenses without being interupted. No matter were
Andy invades, we're ready to fight, delay and cause attrition to the enemy. The end of
the war is actually not so far away anymore.

I'm studying the terrain and trying to determine were we should make our stand in China/Kwantung,
Burma, Malaya, Formosa, the Philippines and even...Japan!

Our air force is again gaining strength and is able to field an increasing amount of modern interceptors.
The Sally, Helen and Lily bombers have been phased out and Peggy medium bombers and Randy light bombers/fb-interceptors
will replace them.

The KB is slowly bein repaired and in a couple of months we should be able to field a carrier fleet again.
The Last Command! Our surface fleet is still intact and remains a serious threat to any enemy invasion.

The major 'resource haul' is providing results and large amount of resources and crude continues to flow back
to Japan. In 14 days we'll make up stock (still awaiting some major convoys).

Lots of shipping moving around south of Wasile, something is probably in the kettle.
I'm upgrading most of my destroyers as they receive a pretty decent radar and AA suit
at this stage of the war. More hesistant about upgrading my battleships and cruisers as my
repair capacity is a bit stretched - and they may take forever to repair.

Today I upgraded the first Sally formation with Peggys. Looks like a sturdy ac with plenty of 12.7 and 20mm cannons for defense.
As you can see, I'm also rebuilding the fighter force and we already got quite a few experienced units. Planning to train all ac that upgrades
to the Franc c and Tony 100 into crack formations and keep them for a rainy day. Strangely enough I still got an Oscar 1b unit that upgrades
to the Frank c

Mitsubishi Ki-67 "Flying Dragon" codename “Peggy”

First encountered during the furious air-sea battle fought off Formosa in 1944, the Allies identified it as a new Naval type. However, downed examples in China and captured planes in the Philippines revealed its true identity. This was the Mitsubishi Ki-67 Hiryu "Flying Dragon" that resembled the G4M Betty put on a slimming diet. Designed by Mitsubishi Chief Engineer Ozawa Kyonosuke and his team in response to a 1941 Japanese Army specification requesting a high-speed heavy bomber the Ki-67 not only met the speed requirement she did so while achieving the maneuverability of a fighter. In addition, it also sported armor and self-sealing fuel tanks and was perhaps one of the best all around bombers produced by Japanese during the Pacific War.
Late in 1940, even as Nakajima’s Ki-49 Donryu was undergoing testing, the Army Air Staff was drafting specifications for her future successor. Mitsubishi was therefore instructed to build three prototypes. Ozawa’s team designed a clean, slender mid-wing monoplane powered by a pair of 1,900-hp Ha-104s. To ease production, the Ki-67 was designed to be constructed from sub-assemblies right from the start. Without a bomb load of any kind, the Hiryu could easily loop, its turning radius often exceeded some fighter designs, and its controls remained smooth and effective even in dives of up to 373 mph. It compared favorably with Allied contemporaries, but despite its official classification by the JAAF as a heavy bomber, it was more in the class of the American B-26 Marauder.
The type was considered to be both easy to fly and amazingly maneuverable. This performance inspired the development of the type into a heavy fighter (the Ki-109), which in addition to more powerful turbocharged engines, would have a hand loaded 75mm cannon and 15 rounds of ammunition in a solid nose . Unfortunately (or fortunately if you were a B-29 crewman) the more powerful engines were not available and the Ki-109 was equipped with standard engines, which would not allow the aircraft to reach sufficient altitude to attack the Superfortresses.
The development of the Ki-67 “Peggy” was chaotic at best. The potential of the plane was so promising that the Army asked for too many versions and tests so that it took until October of 1944 for the plane to enter service. It served mainly in torpedo missions I ALSO WANT THAT! against the US armada heading towards Japan. It also conducted several raids against B-29 bases in the Mariannas. A remarkable heavy bomber: it was not only the best in its category in wartime Japan, but its maneuverability was such that it could outshine purebread fighters. When the war ended and production ceased 727 examples of the “Peggy” had been manufactured.

Matrix pls read -> Somewhat unusually (given their inter-service rivalry), the Ki-67 was used by both the Japanese Army and Navy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of course I don't get torpedoes, 57 mm guns or heavy fighter verrsion of the Peggy....3x500 kg bombs is all Matrix gave me! Buhu

Within bombing range of Allied bases an AR ship managed to nurse the cruisers Takao and Kiso back to life in a size 3 harbour
without anything but leaky CAP as protection. Took a loong time to get flooding down and out. The slow trek towards Manila can
now start. A heavy CAP and escort TFs will accompany them.

Here is the punishment the Kiso took:

CL Kiso, Shell hits 6, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CL Kiso, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

That's 3!! torpedoes for an old Jap light cruiser....

Of these I was able to immeidately upgrade a Zeke Daitai to Jacks and the Oscars to Franks

Trying to rebuild my shattered Oscar force. In 16 days 8 withdrewn units will come back.

Looks like Andy is going to move troops into Benjarmisan. If he does it will be possible to bombard

I spotted an enemy surface combat TF at Samarinda, and since CAP was relatively
low I planned a sweep/naval air strike for the next day.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/16/44

Sub/ASW Attacks

Sub attack at 33,51

Japanese Ships - the damaged transport will attempt to reach Camrahn Bay!
AK Tetsuzan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
PC Ch 15
PG Saga
MSW Tasei Maru

Allied Ships
SS Queenfish
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Air Combat

Day Air attack on TF at 63,84

Japanese aircraft
G4M2 Betty x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M2 Betty: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged

Allied Ships
MSW Guysborough, heavy damage
MSW Competent

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
2 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/17/44

Air Combat

The ordered sweep went in from Tarakan and found 22 enemy fighters over Samarinda.
As expected, a very one sided affair:

Day Air attack on Samarinda , at 31,63

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 45

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 9
P-47D Thunderbolt x 13

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 24 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-40N Warhawk: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An enemy carrier TF and transports are approaching Macassar and continous air attacks
are launched. I will reinforce the place from the air before the landing. With 9 forts it is
worth a little effort.

Day Air attack on Macassar , at 30,69

Allied aircraft
P-38J Lightning x 24
B-29 Superfortress x 82

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
14 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 3
Runway hits 122

Aircraft Attacking:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The air strike from Brunei goes in - very fighter heavy as usual. Too bad
not all of the bombers could launch at once in order to optimize results.

If you count in the 22 losses from the sweep, the 22 enemy fighters shot down 66
of our Zekes. That's just laughable. 8 Warhwaks and 2 P-47s were shot down in the process.

At least our bombers got through, but their agile targets were difficult to hit.

Day Air attack on TF, near Samarinda at 31,63

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 101
B7A Grace x 8
G4M2 Betty x 21
Ki-49 Helen x 10

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 7
P-47D Thunderbolt x 13

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 44 destroyed
B7A Grace: 1 destroyed, 6 damaged
G4M2 Betty: 3 destroyed, 15 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40N Warhawk: 6 destroyed
P-47D Thunderbolt: 2 destroyed, 3 damaged

Allied Ships
DD Cassin Young
DD Nicholson
DD Mahan
DD Sampson, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD Buchanan
DD Gillespie

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 5000 feet
2 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x B7A Grace launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 5000 feet
3 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 5000 feet
4 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x B7A Grace launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
2 x G4M2 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the PM phase a follow up strike was launched: this time 42 enemy fighters
were on CAP....and one bomber got through to be shot down by flak.

110 attack ac shot down by the Samarinda CAP today. 10 defenders shot down
and 1 destroyer damaged. As I told Andy: I doubt I would finish this game if I hadn't
spent so much time and effort on it.

It's simply impossible even to think about attacking an Allied base, cause losses even
to a few enemy fighters are so cripling. Utter show stopper!!

Day Air attack on TF, near Samarinda at 31,63

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 44
B7A Grace x 2
G4M2 Betty x 18
Ki-49 Helen x 7

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 31
P-47D Thunderbolt x 11

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 30 destroyed
B7A Grace: 2 destroyed
G4M2 Betty: 9 destroyed
Ki-49 Helen: 3 destroyed
Ki-46-III Dinah: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-40N Warhawk: 10 damaged

Allied Ships
DD Cassin Young
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Air Losses from the strike on Samarinda

I have ordered some kamikaze units to launch against the enemy ships near Macassar.
This includes Zekes and Grace bombers. I don't have any scruples against putting them on max
altitude after todays slaughter above Samarinda...

My guess is that Kendari will be bombed into rubble by B29s, so it's doubtful whether the kamis will
be able to sortie. Their exp is so low that expected hit % is very low.

I am trying to train a portion of my fighters and bombers to very high exp levels since our medium exp
units are slaughtered 10-1 by the enemy. I will not attempt to hit enemy units protected by a CAP again
until I have to.

The expected invasion takes place: There is not much we can do to oppose it.

Defending force 29264 troops, 262 guns, 36 vehicles, Assault Value = 551

Macassar Invaded

As I told Andy, normally 500 ac would have intercepted the invasion of Macassar, but since game mechanics
doesn't allow it I will all but leave it alone as I can't afford to loose that many ac for no results.

Since A2A combat is so bloody, a more flexible command system for air combat is needed.
As it is the most valuable targets: carriers - are the preferred target for air strikes. So if I want
to attack the transports at Macassar I have to hope that clouds shroud in the enemy carriers.

If not my 2-3 waves of 80-150 attack ac will run into the Uber CAP and get shot down completely.

One way or the other, game mechanics must be changed.
- Less deadly A2A
- The ability to give attack priorities
- The ability to order attack groups to break of attacks if the enemy is too strong
(E.g Ignore losses, limit losses, recon attacks..)
- The ability to set certain hexes as off limits for bombers in order to avoid strong enemy CAP

It would be kewl if these orders were disobeyed due to FOW, strong willed leaders and misunderstandings.
If so, I would be pleased to stand down my training camps for Jap ac, not use high altitude kamikaze ac.

Would also like to see that the US got more ac and pilots to illustrate the immense pilot and ac pools that
were available in the war. Japan should not be able to out produce the Allies. Still, this is a means to an end
because so many thousand Japanese ac are shot down every month.

Imagine how kewl it would be to see the following message:
'4 Frances bombers evades enemy CAP in low clouds and attacks CV Essex'

The opportunities are SO great, and I just pray that Matrix finds a way to incorporate a more flexible
and FOW induced air combat system. After 1.5 years of sending hundreds of ac into suicide attacks with 90% losses,
I'm sick to the bone from reforming and 'training' air groups only to see everything happening over again ad-naseum.

Aha, that flawed game mechanic! There are just so many to choose from I was curious.

Excellent ideas, PzB. Those would go a long way towards correcting the A-A deficiencies. Even the one giving the US more planes and pilots (shudders...).

I think Matrix has to implement some changes Chez. They have done a marvelous job at fixing this and updating
the game, but this has mostly been based on feedback from 42-43 games. What I would like to know is how difficult
it would be to actually implement them and how likely it is that action will be taken....

Andy landed 6000 troops in the small size 1 port/airfield just north of Benjarmasan on Borneo with
fast transport. There is a construction battalion and 5 forts there. I will fly in a thousand troops
and attempt a heavy air bombardment to sap the enemy troops before they shock attack. They are most likely
very fatigued after their rough ride on destroyers and cruisers.

This is where my plan of building forts in all bases comes in handy. It's easy to reinforce them quickly
and provide the reinforcements with good defensive capabilities.

I have upgraded the first crack Lily unit with Randy fighter bombers.
80 exp pilots with a fast, agile and armoured fighter armed with 20 and 37mm guns must
be the perfect 4E killer?

Randy

Is it possible to have your kamikazes attack at night??
I am re-reading Samuel Elliot Morison's account of the US Navy in the Pacific and currently am on the last book with the Allied forces off of Okinawa. Most of the effective kamikazes seem to come at dusk and avoid the day CAP and try to get there before the night CAP.

Well, what do ya know! This ship is named after my great-g-g-g uncle, William Butler Ogden. He was the first mayor of Chicago and is my biological father's only claim to fame on his side! His brother was Abraham Odgen who was my great-g-g-g grandfather.

And you had to go and damage/sink it!

Whats the max altitude for randy? And could you perhaps post stats for both randy and P38J in comparison?

I think Matrix has to implement some changes Chez. They have done a marvelous job at fixing this and updatingthe game, but this has mostly been based on feedback from 42-43 games. What I would like to know is how difficult it would be to actually implement them and how likely it is that action will be taken....

I agree 100 %. It is not about stoping Allies in 1944 it's all about delaying them - i'm not asking for sinking Essexs in late period war but torp or kamikaze would be nice and possibly delay Allies for couple of weeks. I understand your frustration after countless failed strikes which just producing more Allied aces and i don't think i would start another WiTP game if somethings doesn't changes in A2A combat model (the only other choice is going for AV, but i never interested in that).

Ok, the question is is there something you can do it right now. I think that your only opportunity is to do what you've done in Marians - strong and experienced CAP since fighters on escort will be eaten no matter how experienced they are. I know that means no offensive missions but it seems that this is the only way...

Recent Andy's moves showing we were right - he is moving on Borneo-Java axe. If he tries to invade Java (somehow i feels that he could skip this option and go for northern Borneo, Thailand or Malaya; Palembang is very likely target too) you could use base NW of Soerbaja (Maedion?) which can not be reached from sea. Massing 300-400 hundreds crack Georges and Franks on CAP could scare him*

In stock version of the game, Randy is very close to the stats of Ki-45KAIa Nick. My experience is about the Nicks:
+ very good durability, saves pilots against the unescorted heavy bombers, I have noticed that losses are half of the Tonies and Tojos
+ decent speed and manueverability offers changes to intercept bombers
- not enough guns to bring the heavies down, Tonies kill double more heavies
- damaged planes repair slowly due to two engine construction
- gets slaughtered against escort fighters

The 37mm gun in Randy is a poor weapon. I would rather replace it with a 20mm gun. The accuracy is only 3 for the 37mm gun.

P38J is better in every stat vs. Randy.

Lightning vs. Randy
Speed: 414 - 360
Manuever: 34 - 31
Durability: 39 - 36
Gun value: 16 - 12
Altitude: 44k - 33k

well the Randy and Nick are usefull on rear bases beyond P38 range, against unescorted bombers... They are not even good in this situation, but they are usefull.... Forget about them on the frontline, it just gets the pilots killed...

The Nick is useless, apart from being used at night (guess thats why its a night fighter)

Havent tried it in night cap situation as my opponent has tried bombing anywhere at night (and he doesnt need too) But in a night bombing role, they destroyed a recon plane at Mandalay on thier first mission of the war, but the 3 months snice they havent hit a thing, even when attacking crowded airfields in large (60+) numbers.

They lowered robs bomber crews morale though apprently, perhaps due to the interrupted sleep they suffer from the attacks

If you count in the 22 losses from the sweep, the 22 enemy fighters shot down 66
of our Zekes. That's just laughable. 8 Warhwaks and 2 P-47s were shot down in the process.

At least our bombers got through, but their agile targets were difficult to hit.

Day Air attack on TF, near Samarinda at 31,63

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 101
B7A Grace x 8
G4M2 Betty x 21
Ki-49 Helen x 10

Allied aircraft
P-40N Warhawk x 7
P-47D Thunderbolt x 13

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 44 destroyed
B7A Grace: 1 destroyed, 6 damaged
G4M2 Betty: 3 destroyed, 15 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed, 8 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-40N Warhawk: 6 destroyed
P-47D Thunderbolt: 2 destroyed, 3 damaged

Allied fighters were outnumbered 5:1, I agree with you PzB, these results are simply laughable (unless your zekes had exp 30 pilots)... Show stopper for me, something must be done to increase the fun for jap players when allies get their new toys and bonus...

Bye
