All,
I'm slowly but surely plodding through my conversion of CHS/Nikmod 8 to a mid 1943 and beyond scenerio. I've made a first pass through the USAAF fighter & bomber squadron and the 01 Jun 43 start date does solve many minor OOB problems - all the earlier withdrawals can be removed nicely.

I've come to realize the plane set has several holes, and I'm considering adding a few more aircraft. So far I've been able to use open slots, but there aren't too many of those in CHS. I am considering removing some of the older aircraft to free up slots (I'll be mindful of China's needs). Any problems with this idea?

I've added a "strafer" version of the B-25C/D. The PBY-6A is next. As I plow through the transports, I plan to add the C-87 and C-54. I'm also considering adding the PB4Y-2 (tall single tail) and B-32.

I'm also very seriously considering the P-40K / Kittyhawk II.

Any others I should consider on the allied side?

I'll probably ask the same questions once I get around to the Japanese OOB, but it will be a while before I get there.

Please do add the P40k for the USAAF
I would also suggest adding the P-40F (merlin engine) as this was used by at least two USAAF fighter units namely the 68FS and the 44FS that i am aware of.
Also It may be an idea to add the Hurricane IIc as this aircraft was in far greater use than the Hurricane Mk IV of late 1943.

The P-51A is probably going to go in as well - looks like about 8 squadrons worth flew in the CBI starting in late 1943.

To pull this off I and have enough slots (particularly art slots) I'm going to dump most of the early war stuff - P-26/35's etc.

I haven't gotten to the RAF/RAAF/RNZAF OOB yet, but will look at adding the Hurri IIc.

Mostly the same ones you've referenced in the past, however for the P-51A I started here: http://home.att.net/~jbaugher1/p51_7.html

I know Joe Baugher's work isn't gospel, but it's a nice fast place to start. I've got some other Mustang books around here somewhere, have to dig them out now. Our basement (which is where my office is) took some water a couple of weeks ago and it was mass chaos getting everything to higher ground. I have a ton of more modern references from my game design days but they aren't much help in this effort. Everything is all thrown together for the moment...bleh...

As a plastic modeller I've found Bert Kinzey's "Detail & Scale" series to be pretty accurate - not so much for deployment dates, but for actual aircraft configurations. Take the field-mod strafer B-25C/D for instance - everyone knows about the nose guns, but waist and tail guns (usually a single .50 in each location) were also added at the depot.

That said, I'd certainly welcome any and all input you would care to offer. I've printed out a bunch of your posts from this forum.

By deleting the Dutch aircraft (except for the float planes), the P-26/35, the F2A-2, Vindicator, Devastator and probably one or two more, I should have plenty of slots (around a dozen on the allied side) to work with. One thing I've decided to is split the F6F into -3 and -5 models.

The airgroups and locations are pretty straightforward IMHO - the ships and LCU's will be less fun...

I have found lots of holes in the planes for each side.  The question is how detailed do you want to go, and how significantly different was one model from the next, and does it warrent a slot?  Here are some examples I have found in planes for both sides:

The following planes are either not in the plane set, or every model is not.
Zeros:
A6M2-21.....performace is almost exactly the same as the A6M2
A6M7 Model 62 and 63
F4U Models A, C and D and there was also a "clipped" wing C and D.  The C had four 20mm cannon instead of the .50 Cal, but how many were made and used I do not know.
P-38 J, P-38 L and L "Late Model" the game only has G and L
Spit Model III, V, IX, XIV and is the Spit's range correct?  I am looking into that.

Anyway those are some examples..........you could really get into a lot of detail here, with units going through several upgrades.

I'm only looking at what was around from 01 Jun 43 and later.

I haven't started looking at the IJA/IJN yet.

Right now I have the F4U-1, F4U-1D & F4U-4 as well as the Corsair III/IV and the RNZAF F4U-1D.

The F4U-1A is virtually identical to the -1
The F4U-1C was the cannon armed version that did see service in 1945; around 200 were built. I'm not sure if it's worth it to add this, but if I have the slots it will probably go in.
The "clipped wing" Corsairs went to the FAA, the brit carriers had less overhead clearance in their hanger decks. They are represented by the Corsair III/IV (and if I have the slots I may split this into the Corsair III and Corsair IV.

I already have the P-38F/G/J/L thanks to CHS - might remove the F as it was out of front line service by 1943. Not sure what you mean by "L late model" unless you are talking about the P-38L-5-LO vs the P-38L-1-LO. Not much of a change except to external stores capability - AtG rockets don't seem to work in the game and I'm not sure droptanks work correctly either, so not sure there would be a difference in game engine terms.

Let me know what you discover on the Spit's range, I haven't tinkered with them yet beyond what is in CHS (Vb/VIII/XIV plus Seafire I/II & III/XV).

As for Spit range I have found two statements for two different models, both about the same range, and much farther than the game allows.

Spit Mark I -------668K or 417.5 miles
Spit Mark IX------698K or 436 miles

Now if those are max ranges at cruise, then I suggest cutting the range down by 20-30% for an effective combat range.  This would take into account going to full combat power for 15-20min then having to return to base.  So if the range of the Spit is correct above, then shaving 20% equals a combat range of 333.6 miles and shaving 30% off equals 291 miles for a Spit Mk I.  A great improvement over the game range.  Oh and 292 miles is 242 NM, just fyi.  So a Spit one should be able to fly four hexs, if you used the 242nm as a standard.  I am not sure what their game range is right now.  I am also doing a re-working plane data for the Nik mod, re-doing plane data. I plan on using the above for range calulations, and IL-2 PF turn rate in degrees per sec for plane manuverability ratings. As for speed, using the IL-2 PF compare, I have found the Zero gets a bit slower, but is far more manuverable, while Allied planes, particularly after 43 get faster and have less manuevabilty.

On another note, if there is a set hard programed date in the game where the Japanese planes get down graded, or the Allies get a boast, as I saw some talk in another thread, then I am not sure if I want to even bother with it.
