Well, we just started a new game so we wanted to run an AAR.

It is scen 16 - The Day after the Day of Infamy (B-Mod scen 193).

Our Allied team is myself, BluesBob, and Kadrin. We have split the Allied side up as follows: The ABDA- Australia- SW Pac (Mac' country) is BluesBob; India-Burma-Malaya is Kadrin (Mountbatten); China, and the rest of the Pacific (North-Central-South), USAFFE (ground echelons), and West Coast are 'yours truly'.

Our distinguished opponent is kbad (aka Admiral Ichibon Karlson). Kbad wanted to control the entire Japanese effort rather than split up commands so we said fine...at least he won't have to deal with dissention in command at the staff meetings!

So getting started, it's Dec 8th, Pearl was smacked hard (historical results) and the Japanese Empire has paid a visit to Manila, Hong Kong, and Kota Bharu. Where is the KB? More reports as the war develops...

Well, it looks like we lost all the TK's and such at Manila. Too bad, but at least they're taking fuel to the bottom with them. No surprises so far, except maybe the ferocity of the attack on Manila.

On the bright side, although I am deprived of Indy's services for the next 20 months - she is coming back as a shiney new Baltimore!

As Big-B said early, I am to be the commander of forces in Southeast Asia.

As my theater will be primarily India, Burma, Indo-China and Malaya, China will be a concern of mine, as it is not only my flank, but holding quite a large chunk of the Japanese army in place aswell. I intend to help the Chinese effort in any way possible.

As I have the British Fleet under my control, I have a force kbad knows (from previous experience) is quite capable of taking on any thing he throws at me short of the KB. Therefore I believe after his foray in the Pacific his attention will shift to crippling the Royal Navy quickly, primarily its carriers and fast battleships.

I've given it thought and they shall be held back, most likely around Pangim to be close enough to react to any raiding or invasions, yet far enough to run should kbad decide to bring the KB around. The Maldives are going to be a crucial base to set up quickly with search aircraft to prevent him sneaking around the tip of India into the Arabian Sea (to hit my fleet in port, or raid shipping).

Singapore is to be evacuated, whatever troops I can get out will be ferried directly to Palembang, from there they will march to Teloekbetoeng and onto waiting transports back to India.

Force Z will operate in the DEI along side the ABDA, until Betty's/Nell's become a large threat.

As for Burma, I've already decided it to be indefensible and will only put up a few minor delaying actions to keep the Burma Road open for a while.

So now that my plans have been laid out, its time to continue with the war:

Troops on the Malayan Penninsula are retreating towards Singapore. I'm confident the Japanese will not advance fast enough and expect almost a complete evacuation of forces in Malaya.

Japan has established a secure beachhead on the Philippines as more and more troops disembark. Local intelligence reports the 48th Division has taken Laoag.

Marines have engaged in sporadic firefights on Guam as an NLF probes the defenses of the naval station.

A number of submarines have been spotted moving into the Java Sea and surrounding areas. On the other end of the Pacific Hawaii is now looking quite devoid of submarines.

The KB has once again disappeared, both Lexington and Enterprise are safely out of range. Plans have been made for Saratoga to rendevous as soon as possible.

And lastly, the Japanese have landed at Manokwari. I suspect this to be little more than place for his search planes to fly out of and make sure his next landing (which I'd wager is Biak) is quite safe.

Surely if you plan to help the Chinese effort, keeping the Burma Road open is a key objective? With your initial air transport assets you will never be able to replace the 500 tonnes of supply it provides each day. The Chinese have little enough supply, even after Big Bs readjustment of their supply levels, especially early on.

While the Burma Road is essential, Big B and I decided that the Chinese under Southeast Asia Command are going into Burma to hold open the road as long as possible before retreating into India. The British (and Indian) forces in Burma are to delay the Japanese long enough for the Chinese to arrive and take over. The British would then return to India and replace losses and disablements.

By having the Chinese units in Burma not only are they helping hold the road open but are also now off the Chinese supply lines, thereby improving the supply situation in China.

I'm planning on a counter-offensive a month or two after October when P-38's become availible, but until then I'll have a few units rotating in and out of Burma to get experience and help the Chinese hold the road. I expect the Chinese to be able to hold the road open until June. At which time preperation for the counter-offensive will begin.

This is all going off previous experience against kbad in PBEM's.

Also remember these are just plans, and are subject to change as the situation changes. What's important now might not be important in 6 months, 3 months, 2 weeks, or even just days.

Thanks for the info. I shall watch with great interest as I am just about to start a game with this mod against Scout1. I have allowed him to amend the dispositions of his APs and some AKs to ensure that he is able to move all of his assault units promptly rather than over a month as you have to with the standard setup. Time will tell as to how wise that was, especially with limited 4E until Jun 42...

How is the amended A2A shaking out in your opinions or is it too early to tell?

That brings up an interesting point: who will have command of the Chinese forces outside of China. Will it be Big B, functioning as Stillwell? If so, he'll have to pay attention to events far away from the normal sphere of Hawaii and the West Coast. (And, oh yes, we might not want to completely forget the Arctic.)

As you can see from the combat reports, there hasn't been any air combat just yet. I have a feeling he's getting his fighter units well rested before the confrontation.

I think I may post monthly losses for all aircraft to give everyone an idea of how the air combat is going.

I do believe he's handing command over to me as they reach Burma, with instructions to hold the road open but not at the cost of the units.

And yes, I bug him to check more than just the West Coast and Hawaii area often. Whether he does or not....

I'm looking forward to the new A2A resolutions. The reason for this AAR was to let people know how it works in Big B's scenario.

Since I'm taking the ABDA and Mac in Oz, I've also got to consider the new plane upgrades, replacement rates, and availability. No more can there be 200 B-17E's operating out of Moresby within four or five months. I'll be lucky if I have 48 for all of 1942. With the new A2A attrition may be down, but things will still move at a snail's pace as bomber command is more realistic.

Here is the action for Dec 11th:

The brave Marine garrison on Guam gave it their all in a shock attack attempt to wipe out the Japanese beach head, but the odds were too long for them. Retreat back into the island's interior now.

I pushed up a Philippine Army Division in time to save Aparri from capture - but the Japs are ashore in strength at Lingayen.
The Japs have also landed in my lap at Davao on Mindanao - but we gave them a warm reception there!

I'll turn comentary over to the others now...

And here is Dec 12th,
The Japs have landed at Tulagi - extending their presence in the Solomons, and they are also beginning operations in China to clear Guerilla Units in their rear areas.
The nail biting action for me right now (since I am General Wainright also) is on North Luzon. Signal Intellegence has discovered that the Japanese 16th Div is loaded up and heading for Naga - and our PBYs confirmed this today (see map below).
Also, I have ordered an All-Out Deliberate Attack on the Japanese beachead at Lingayen, using every good unit I have on Luzon - they will go in today, and I am awaiting action reports tomorrow!

We knew we might be facing a "new and improved" Japanese command after our last game. In that one we reinforced Rabaul and turned the bombers loose on Truk. We pasted it. He learned his lesson well. He's already taken Kavieng, north of Rabaul, and now he's landed at Tulagi. I suspect a Shortlands invasion soon, followed by Rabaul and then Lae.

Port Moresby he'll never take!!!

Dec 13th - What a day!

What a day! The Japs pushed me out of Davao, they took Tarawa, A SNLF took a deserted san Marcelino, and Wainright's Counter Attack re-takes Lingayen!
Meanwhile -subs on both sides are shooting at ships everywhere, and JapBB's are shelling bases across the Pacific!

It's a FLUID stiuation to say the least!

In the meanwhile, on Luzon,I am going to wipe out that isolated small Japanese force at San Marcelino - and hold the North Luzon Line...I hope MacAurther's promissses of relief from the War Department get here in time!

Dec 15th,

Well, the Japanese are busy expanding their hold in the Philippines, New Guinea, and the DEI. My (Wainright's) troops on Luzon are getting nervous - too many Jap landings to contest, I don't know whereI'm going to get the troops and breathing space to hold them all at the beaches!

The one element I am noticing so far is that we have not been subjected to merciless overwhelming airiel bombardment ... but it can only be a matter of time.

I need more troops and supply desperately - otherwise I will have to pull back everywhere on Luzon, maybe we are buying time for the ABDA to organize - but it's still early.

Hong Kong is still holding out, but the KB has vanished into the stormy North Pacific...for now.

The Thin Red Line.

Japanese agression has surprised us this game. Particularly in the New Guinea - Solomons area. But the combined Allied commands aren't worried. New tactics were tried, and although the enemy also was employing new strategy, our strategy seems to be holding out.

Intelligence is trying desperately to ascertain the whereabouts of the KB. It's presence in any theater could swing the tide of battle heavily in the Japanese favor and make future plans weak.

The only thing Big Mac found disheartening is having to abandon so many troops throughout the P.I. We had the ships, we had the time...but we don't have enough of those damn PP's.

But, overall, morale is high. We've played war games for many months now and know our enemies weaknesses...which is every friggin' aspect of his strategy, production, and material. Hahahahaha!!! We'll have the Emperor serving tea at the White House, Yamamoto sweeping the floors of Buckingham Palace, and Tojo lighting Big Mac's pipe in six months!!!

In an attempt to catch troops unloading at Kuching, Prince of Whales and Repulse were dispatched, along with 3 D Class Cruisers and 5 Destroyers, on a shoot and scoot mission.

They came across a Minesweeper and the light cruiser Kashii and proceeded to shoot the pants off them. Kashii took a 14 inch shell hit in the opening moments followed soon after by 2 torpedoes. The Minesweeper somehow managed to stay in one piece long enough to be hit by no less that 9 14 inch rounds (I admit I just clicked the done button after the 9th and didn't bother watching the rest).

The tally is now: RN - 2 IJN - 0

Time for the Royal Navy to disappear again, where will it turn up next?

Combat Report to follow.

The British always go on and on and on about Dunkirk. I got news for them...try a Dunkirk spread out over 30,000 square miles. And all we got is targets...none of those little boats that are ignored so well.

Confidence is high.

Dec 18th.

The war progresses, Japanese troops have taken Goergetown - severing the Malay peninsula, and have landed in force at Lunga (looks like a replay of the Solomons' Campaign is in the cards).

Meanwhile on Luzon, the Japanese 16th Inf Div assaulted Manila today - but made no headway, and the Japs finally took Aparri. Hong Kong still holds...

Well, things continue to develop. Japanese strategy is becoming clearer, as the Japanese landed on and captured Baker Island today - obviously they are going for the Australia Supply Line ASAP. Now we know where to go.

In the Philippines, the battle for Luzon continues. Manila is holding fine after a Japanese assault yesterday, and at San Marcelino - Japanese forces launched an all out Shock Attack against US and Filipino forces. However, Wainright's forces threw this attack back with heavy enemy losses.

Torpedo carrying Bettys were busy today as well, hitting several AKs with torpedoes.....

Confidence is still high. Evacuations not going as planned in the face of determined Japanese aggression. But...all is still going well. It's only a matter of time before he sticks his neck out a little to far and we chop it off. You can mess around with the fringes of the Allied area of control, but don't you dare come into the heart.

Dec 20th.

Another day of sad news for the Allies...Hong Kong fell today. Thousands of British troops surrendered today.

In the Philippines, General Wainright met the retiring US & Filipino troops as they fell back from the Japanese lines at San Marcelino saying "It's my fault, ...it is all my fault. Friends - hear me - it is entirely my fault. I thought we were invincible, but the blame for today's attack is entirely my fault. Now we must show good order - never let them see you runnin - do you hear? Never let you runnin! Now we must go back and reform to fight another day...and there will Be another day"

Japanese aerial dominance is making itself felt fast and furious now, G3Ms and G4Ms are now routinely hitting Allied surface ships in our waters, as well as Japanese submarines making their presence felt.

On Luzon, another Japanese Division has landed at Vigan, pushing US/Filipino forces back. Except for Manila, everywhere on Luzon we are in retreat now.

With Hong Kong gone now, only Singapore holds the Japanese back in the Malaya area.
