I've been away from PS for a while (too busy with work to have much play time), but I was curious about the latest build and updated it a couple of nights ago and set up an association and let it run.

It started in 1919 - historical players - and I'm just about at the end of the '42 season. Reviewing the stats tonight, most things looked pretty good. (Even though the Babe did not pan out and retired with under 300 HR's.)

Here's what's got me astonished, however.

Paul (Daffy) Dean made his debut in '32 and was an ok pitcher his first four years. He did lead the league in K's in '34 with 178. Then then in '36 it appears he got hooked up with Barry Bonds trainer! (When did sterioids get invented?)

In '36 hi had 247 K's. Ok, that is a reasonable jump.

But look at the following years:
K's W/L
'37: 414 29-5
'38: 585 30-7
'39: 698 28-9
'40: 832 24-13
'41: 825 25-11

And in the first week of August in '42 he's already racked up 561 K's. He's only 29, and already has passed the 4,000 mark for his career.

I've never seen a statistical abnormality like this in PS with K's - at least not dating back to the earliest days.

I just thought I'd post it so that Shaun could see it when he gets back in town.

Wow!

To get 832 K's in a season means that a pitcher would have to pitch at least 277 1/3 innings with EVERY SINGLE OUT recorded as a strikeout.  That seems quite implausible from a realistic standpoint.

Oddly enough, in my fictional league I've simmed 21 seasons and there's never yet been a pitcher to reach the 300 K mark in strikeouts (which has always seemed strange).

In 29 seasons of my fictional league, my single-season strikeout leader had 306 strikeouts.

He also had a 0.89 ERA that season as a starting pitcher (yikes!).

Yeah, I was quite astonished.  I've never seen anything like this in any version of PS.

In '40, he picted 302.1 innings, with 832 K's.  He gave up 184 hits, 14 HR's and 53 BB.  His ERA was 1.19.  I'm actually surprised with those numbers that he ONLY had a 25-11 record.

And in '41 he had a minor slump - only pitched 290.1 innings with 825 K's.  <grin>

In the current year, in early August he's pitched 201.2 innings with 561 K's (ERA 0.80).

Since I have been away for a few months, my initial reaction that something must have gotten broken in the latest build - because I've never seen anything like this with strikeouts.

It'll be interesting to see what Shuan has to say when he gets back.

I thought I'd add his current ratings:
Age: 29
Stuff: 96
Velocity: 100
Control: 100
Endurance: 90
Potential: 87

Lord knows what he'll be like when he finally realized his potential!

Well, now that Randy's posted innings pitched, we can rule out that theory. Dean only had 2.75 K/IP in '40, 2.84 in '41, and 2.78 in '42.

As a first guess, maybe the incremental-changes-during-the-season feature has had his strikeout percentages steadily increasing, peaking in '41?

I was so suprised by the numbers that I stopped the Association.  I'm restarting it tonight and will let it run.  Now I'm curious to see just what happens if he continues to improve.  :)

Here's an update on the on-going progress of Superman (aka Daffy Dean):

In late August of '47, he's 17-5, with an EAR of 1.71.  H'es pitched 204.s innings so far this season, wiht 447 K's so far.  His ratings are Stuff: 92; Velocity: 99 and Control: 100.  However, his potential has dropped to 1 and his endurance is down to 62.

Here are the IP/K figures in the years that got processed since last night:

1942:  300.2 IP / 843 K's
1943:  272.2 IP / 767 K's
1944:  300.2 IP / 835 K's
1945:  277.1 IP / 726 K's
1946:  267 IP  /  627 K's

Running version 1.38.  Last year 1985 Dwight Gooden in his 2nd year in the league pitched 252 innings with 447 strikeouts.  This year, he had an 8 inning 21 kos, 1 BB with 0 hits.  Leading 1-0 the computer replaced him with the closer in the 9th.

That's what he gets for getting sloppy and walking that guy!
