Ron,

Was this the first turn after the patch?  I found out that if the Allied player runs the turn and has already patch, and the Japan player ran the turn before patching, but issued order after patching, then there will be a sync issue every time.  The next turn was back in sync.

Nope. This occured about a dozen or more turns after we upgraded simultaneously. Everything was hunky dory up to this example. Just received the subsequent turn and all is good again. This must be really hard on the teams cranial hair follicles. I find it strange that nothing previously suspected to cause the sync anomaly is present in this. We'll see if the patch can handle strafing attacks as my other game has a big strafing attack ordered.

Not good news.

I was hoping that the bug was sqashed for good.

I've noticed that in all of my sync issues, the ASW attacks were different, or there were more/less of them then the original report.

Wonder if there is a connection here?

Another case where I had a sync issue (before 1.802) is I ran a turn as Japan, saved to send to opponent, copied a 001 turn into the save directory from a Japan opponent and ran it (and had sync issues). I never close the game completely. I was at the main menu when I did this. Don't know if not getting completly out of the game caused the sync issue, but just to be safe, I always get completely out of the game now.

Really sorry to hear that Ron. I was hoping this issue had been fixed.

For my part I always, ALWAYS scan the CR that my opponent sends me before watching the replay. I have lost two BB's to the synch bug in the past (by not knowing they had been torpedoed). Even if the bug is fixed I will keep doing that.

Also, nothing other than planes strafing PT boats has ever caused synch problems for me. A little concerning to know that there may be other causes.

Note that when we call a symptom "A Bug" sometimes this is a mis-nomer.

MichaelM did comment that while he fixed several instances of incorrect random number calls, we could not be sure we got "all" of them. There are multiple paths through the code. If one path uses the combat random number generator and the other path uses a different random number generator, when the paths merge, the random number sequences are different, hence the symptom is seen. But there maybe any number of spots where the incorrect random number generator is called. As we gets hints about causes we can search for solutions. The "strafing" attack version, was very reproducible and hence (ultimately) fixable.

A similar situation exists for the so called "disappearing unit bug" ... I'd really call this one the "disappearing unit bug Group" ... before Don and I got involved with the code I think MichaelW had fixed about a dozen "different" instances of this "symptom" ... and since Don and I have gotten involved I think we've fixed another dozen "different" instances. So about 25 fixes altogether. So is "the" disappearing unit bug fixed? I doubt it. But we can safely say that the frequency is very much reduced. And so we are at least making progress. And BTW we include "teleporting" in this same category, since the types of issues are the same, often related to unit fragments and divided units and data not getting cleared out when the units transition between these states. We've gotten a lot of them, but probably not all of them.

So, perhaps the same paradigm for "synch bug Group" ... we will be able to resolve the "different" causes, as we become aware of them ... sorry can't get 100% first time.

Unfortunately we haven't had any luck passing around saves of synch issues. Like if I send one to Don it isn't a synch issue for him. So we had to get to the point where we could build a test case. But eventually we got there. So what would help is telling us exactly (if you can) what keystrokes you did to make it happen.

Also like in the above (long) post, could you indicate where the first diverence happens? Use a third color on the blue listing?

OK..I never hit the escape key anyway during replays so that is out. I do mouse over to the exit toggle on the screen and left click on this to bypass the land combat (same thing but different method), air combat and naval combat animations when they are tedious or I'm in a hurry. What is interesting here is that I did not manipulate the keyboard or mouse click during the replay prior to the AM PHASE to instigate the sync divergence as it began almost immediately. The only aspect of the replays which match is the first combat below

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/14/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 46,45

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 10
PC Fumi Maru #3

Allied Ships
SS Thresher

All after the above is different. So, to answer your question more clearly, no keyboard or mouse manipulation occurred prior to the onset of the sync divergence. It occurred by its own accord.

I had this same problem of sync error two days ago... for the moment, 10 turns, has happened only one time. I didn't hit the ESC key too.

As long as your sure your opponent also did not hit the escape (or other exit buttons) since either player exiting annimation before done has caused issues.

But we're convinced there are other causes (other than strafing) just wasn't clear before we took that one off the table.

I have also run into this problem in my game with bernie.  I "did" strafe LCMs after the bug was squashed and 2 turns later bernie reported we were out of synch again.  Its not the first time in this game.  I wonder if you have fallen out of synch if you are more likely to continue to have problems with the bug?

Hi, Joe.

Oh, did not know that the Japanese player can cause sync issues as his replay is always identical. I'll ask Bill. So clicking on the "DONE" toggle is the same as hitting escape for the purposes of the sync issue, correct?

FYI, Michael Mac has the relevant game and replay files for the replay examples posted above.
