I've heard of the game, but don't know much about it. What is the setup? Do you play individual battles (Coral Sea, Midway, Philippines Sea, etc) or are their campaigns (SW Pacific, Central Pacific, etc). Do you include any invasions since part of what the fleets were doing was covering or defending against invasions. How does the game work? Thanks.

Individual battles concentrating on air/naval aspects is what this game is about.

Invasions are handled (iirc) abstractly. Carrier ops are the focus.

I look forward to this as I can't spend all my time playing WITP (or can I?).

I've played Uncommon Valor and War in the Pacific, and I know that Carriers of War is genetically related to them.  But is it simpler, more complex (more tactical?), or what?  And what will the rebirth add to the package that the original lacked?

Please advise.

Carriers at War is on a different scale than UV or WiTP, battles as opposed to campaigns. In CAW, the game play consists of finding the enemy and engaging him, and that's it (as far as I remember). In those other two games, you are running an entire campaign over a huge geographic area. UV and WiTP are considered monster games and CAW isn't.

Carriers At War was a game that ran in continuous time (IIRC, it had realtime capability just like Harpoon did in that it could be set so that 1 second of game time would take exactly 1 second of actual time, or much faster - you could adjust the speed as the game progressed) which you could pause so that you could issue orders. Most scenarios were only a few days long.

You organized your TFs, gave them orders, organized and sent out your search aircraft aand then responded to their sightings (keeping in mind that they were notorious for misrepresenting what they saw). You are in charge of organizing the CAP coverage of your aircraft as well. Land based air is in the game, works just like carrier based except that you don't have as many restrictions on plane handling (dependant upon hte airbase). . Surface combat was a little more complex than that in UV/WITP, but still wasn't done on a realistic battle map.

True ??

I always thought that game was classical turn based wargame with hexes.
It seems I missed a true gem when I decided NOT to order the old CaW from ssgus.

Now that I take a closer look at the screens, there are no hex either. Oh my !

Where is the damn credit card when you need it ?

Yep, CAW was/is real time.  You can plot your moves and then speed up time (really useful for night turns).  I had the original on my first computer (C64) and CAWII on a PC.  Really looking forward to this update.  I have UV but never have the time to put into it.  CAW will allow me to play the classic carrier battles again.

I've heard that Carrier Strike is also being revamped.  Is this true??  This one, I believe, was turn based and you actually got to manage carrier flight deck operations.  While not as pretty as CAW, CS was still a very good carrier game.

Nice to hear.

Nevertheless, I checked the Game page at Matrix and it says :

"Turn-Based IGOUGO - Top Down"

So where is the truth ?
I hope this is just a mistake from the website editor. IGOUGO is not a bad thing per se but real time would mean a true gem.

Cheers,

JeF.

The time structure of the game hasn't changed. Its realtime.

Gregor, sorry to butt in....but I would very much appreciate what the new system requirments will be for the new version of CAW. Am I going to have to go out and buy a new computer with a multi-gigahurtz processor and gazillion megabytes of system and graphics RAM to play the new game. I have been playing CAW, CAW2, and CCAW with a 500 MgH machine...is that going to be adequate for the new version? Thanks

I'm going to wager a guess at an answer here. The new one will require at least Win98 or more likely Win2K or XP as an operating system. Will your 500 Mgz system be aable to run a game under one of those OS's?
