Since 1.8.02 I have had trouble with troops heading in the wrong direction. I will set a unit to move, say, NE and later check on the status and it has gone 30 miles and the indicated direction is E. When I reset the destination sometimes it sets the distance travelled to 0 and sometimes it keeps the same distance.

Right now I have a unit in Tjilitjap which I set to go to the hex SW of Batavia where an enemy unit is located. Few turns later I look to see that it has not moved out of the town and find it has travelled 55 miles and the direction indicated is W (into the sea) - and the destination is PALEMBANG!!

First I have heard of this. Is this a designed feature or an unplanned one?

I know that sometimes units will move in a different direction to your intention, but this can be due to the computer deciding the longer route by rail /road is quicker than by trail/clear/woods etc.
Haven't got a map in front of me so I don't know if this is whats happening to you.

Yeah but it doesn't always decide "correctly" ... here is example [one of my favorites!] ... I ordered the unit to move per the green arrow. One hex in the clear. (And no enemy units in either hex btw) .. but instead the "movement assistant" if we can call him that. Decided to put the unit aboard a train move him away from the front, then detrain then walk through 2 more jungle trail hexes .. total traversal time close to 2 months, versus the 6 days or so it would take to walk from the clear terrain hex - 1 hex - to the clear terrain hex. But my understanding is that this is WAD ... the "pathing" routine is following the supply routes which run along the roads.
Maybe one day we can "improve" this one (both the design and the implementation) !!

I've had units where it says the are moving the wrong way (east instead of west), but then once they reach th 60 mile mark, the move into the correct hex (the hex to the west).

Well, I did not change the direction of the example I gave above. Wanna see if he moves toward batavia or into the sea or ends up in Palembang - yes it says his destination is Palembang.

I have had troops go a different ways as Joe showed. But until 1.8.02 I have not seen so many incorrect directions, i.e. actually travelling one way but the indicator swhoed another direction.

A little earlier in the game I had a tank unit SE of Mandalay which I ordered to go NE to the hex E of Mandalay. The enemy was occupying Mandalay. The tank unit went into Mandalay resulting in the tanks making a shock attack and getting slaughtered and pushed back into their starting hex. Thought I made a mistake (quite a large probability) and sent it NE again. Same thing happened. Then an enemy unit occupied the hex E of Mandalay and my tank followed orders into the hex E of Mandalay.

I've also seen troops stay in the same hex for weeks when ordered to march. When I look at the unit it will say it's traveled hundreds of miles towards its destination. For example, I have two units that showed up in Karachi that I set to march across India. They've been marching for weeks now and the unit information screen says they have marched something like 900 miles on a 1000 mile journey (I don't recall the exact numbers), but they haven't left Karachi. I'm leaving them alone to see if they magically appear in their destination when they finish marching, though I suspect they won't.

Just curious - these random walk-abouts - do they happen in a new game started in 1.802 also? I was just wondering if the problem seems to be due to upgrades to a current game or if the walk-abouts happen no matter what.

Here's one I reported a while ago that sounds like what you're seeing (as it involves troops moving East). Joe, you might check your list to see if it's on it.

- Unit is set to move to a given place and begins doing so.
- Unit is attackced and forced to retreat.
- Unit continues moving to assigned place (that's good, the destination used to get re-set, many versions ago).
- Problem - the unit will always move to the East, even if East is into the ocean!
- Work-around - re-issue the order for the destination.
- The good news - the miles accumulated toward the East will be carried over (not lost), because the unit is still moving to the same ordered destination.

The direction also gets messed up sometimes with "pursue after shock attack." The unit(s) have the correct destination hex, but have the wrong direction (in a recent example, I had units moving either West or East, forget which, out of Noumea when the only way out is NE).

I think the units are moving to the right hex, but the movement rates suggest that they are not using the correct terrain values. For example, the units in the Noumea example I cited are using woods movement rates, not road. To help verify this, I reset most of them to move NW (thankfully the existing distance was not reset), but left one moving West. Next turn (two day turns), the ones moving NW had made considerably more distance, and most arrived (the ones that didn't were more fatigued, the unit I left moving the "wrong" direction was similar in fatigue to some that made it)

Well, sometimes the the miles stay the same and sometimes they reset to zero when I reset the destination. So I am never sure whether to reset it and lose the mileage or let it go and hope it ends up where I sent it.

In the example above the unit did move to the hex E of Tjilitjap instead of W into the sea which is where it was headed last turn. It still has 180 as the distance to travel (to Batavia I guess) and it has gone 3 miles. The destination however is still Palembang.

The Joe & Don crew haven't yet tried to tackle movement issues .. so no changes here since we've been on board (Mar 06 ... patches 1.8.0.0 through 1.8.0.2).

The above mentioned unit is now heading NW (toward Batavia) and has gone 33 miles. Still headed for Palembang.

The small enemy unit is either holding still or going off-road toward Merek. Wish recon could let you know what direction LCUs were headed. You'd think after the enemy had gone 30 or so miles your recon planes would notice it an let you know.

But maybe some of the improvements you have made brought some other problem to life or intensified its effect (since funky movement has been a problem all along).
