When a general is promoted does he retain all of his attributes?

I think there sould be a chance that he loses some of his attributes. There are many examples of leaders that funtioned well in lesser positions but suffered when promoted.

The attributes don't change because of promotion. One needs to promote the generals whose strengths are better suited for the corps or army levels (or, if the ratings are hidden, promote the generals who appear best suited).

Can you choose random attributes and hidden attributes together?

Also if you choose random attributes will the south still get a little advantage in early leaders or are all attributes just randomly generated with no regard to the south's initial advantage?

Yes, and it is hard to imagine either getting too much use without the other. Together, they put the player in roughly the same situation as Lincoln - not knowing who the good commanders are and potentially having to try several to see how they do and then make adjustments as necessary.

Yes, the south gets a little advantage when using random attributes. So while Davis will also need to experiment a bit, his search isn't as difficult as Lincoln's.

In principle, I think this is the best way of playing the game, for the reason you give ("same situation as Lincoln").

Unfortunately, I think many players, perhaps including me, will find it hard to get used to playing a Civil War game in which all the generals seem to have been to a name-swapping party. I'll have to try it and see how it feels.
