Does anyone know if there is a limit of how many seaplanes a tender can handle? I've noticed two classes of tenders, AV and AVD. I'd never heard of the AVD class and had to look it up. That being said, since the AVD is smaller (converted DD) it seems it should only be able to handle fewer seaplanes. If so how many and what kind, PBY's or Kingfisher size?

Check section 14.2 in your manual. It's all there...

And size doesn't enter into it. Seaplane tenders weren't meant to have the aircraft onboard and operate them from there...

Thanks, but unless I'm missing something I don't see the number of seaplanes they can support.

Ie: These ships add aviation support equal to the following:

Allied AVD/AV/CS ships with a durability greater than 12: their capacity plus 18, minus the number of planes on board.

Is the capacity the number of seaplanes they can support?

This is what's going on. I've started the Coral Sea scenario and the AV's and AVD's at Noumea have a capacity of 0 and there are no planes onboard the ships that I can see. There are seaplanes at the base.

What I want to do is move a sqd of PBY's and either the AVD or AV to support them to the northern end of the island.

I know I'm not using them correctly and I'm still searching on how.

Mike

The part about the tenders not having any A/C onboard I realise and understand.

Think of American seaplane tenders as the AIMD onboard the Chuckie V. In that they are shops and support equipment that could basically take a seaplane or float plane from the J2F duck up to the PBM Mariner and do repairs to the engines, airframes, electronics, weapons, and aircrew gear. They should also be able to load weapons. If you want to move them forward to an unimproved dot on the map the best way to do it is send an AK loaded with supplies to the dot you want to and then move your AV or AVD there. Once there then fly in the patrol squadron. They will operate as seaborne aviation support unit and when you click on the area that they are operating from you should see the aviaton support listed as n+12 or n+18. That is they will add to the aviation support at the base and though can fix shore based units to my understanding from playing the game will only concentrate on seaplanes at that base first then shore based. The AV will draw supplies from the ones that you offloaded from your AK. You will also need to understand that if you keep the AV and VP unit at this base you will need to ship in additional supplies as needed.

What YankeeAirRat said plus I'm guessing capacity is for onboard a/c only so, dur greater than 12 means they can provide support off board for 18 a/c, dur less than 12 = support for 12 a/c.

What it boils down to is that most Allied AVDs can support 12 aircraft and most AVs can support 18. They are like mobile aviation support units that only support floatplanes and flying boats.

Nice to see another Triangle guy! Live in Durham myself.

Japanese AVs and Allied AVs are different creatures. Allies generally have no seagoing capacity and only provide support for floatplanes in any dot or better hex. Japanese AVs have seagoing capacity and can launch at sea.

How ironic. I was AIMD on the Vinson.

Reading this makes things clearer, thanks.

I think there is two more people on this forum from Raleigh, weird because I don't think Raleigh is all that big.

Not usually. I do this a lot.
