The little dots of beach, can they be built up to a base? Or are they just places to place troops for defense? And if just to place troops there, what purpose would that serve?

Anyplace with a dot can be built into a base. Some of the bases cant be much. If you own the dot, you can click on it and see how big it can be eventually. To build a base, just move some supply and an engineer unit (not comboat engineers, the other ones) to it and it will get a flag when it gets to size 1 in port or airfield.

Thanks for the reply. Was going over the manual and you are right, they can be built up into bases. Hadn't thought of clickong on one for info either. Thanks again!

Some dots can be built in big bases (Dobadura in New Guinea being a good example), most are bases size 0/0, but so can be built to 3/3 if you need to.

Samo (next to Rabaul) and Dabodoura (Just north of Gili Gili) build up nicely.

Just bear in mind that building up a 0/0 will take forever.

With Japanese Eng units yes, but not with 10 seebee units and 100,000 supply.

Took about 3-4 months with 300 Jap engineers to build Samo.

Yeh, our Engineering capabilities are too slow in the game.  The SeaBees had Henderson field up and running (Level 1) in just 3 days.  The planes came a week later.  I've seen it take as long as 2 weeks to get to that point in the game.  I think they require a little too much in the game to build at a good speed.

In the real world, Henderson was 90%+ of the way to level 1 when the US invaded. The US had been watching the Japanese build an airfield there and decided to invade Guadalcanal just before it was operational. In game terms, Henderson would have had some damage from the invasion, and would have been very close to level 1 when the CBs got there. All they needed to do was fix the damage and complete the field.

Also in the real world you wouldn't see 15 engineering units stacked on an atoll to build a level 4 airfield... you would get that in the game if it was easier to build them.

Wdolsons response above was true. But.... in game it is possible to take a size 0 AF (at 0%) to size 1 in 1-2 days - you just need enough engineers, and late game as the Allies you have plenty. May not work for bases with max AF size 0 (they are a lot slower - like 10x) but max 1 or better is possible.
