Either Luskan can't read or he is naturally thick but I did state before that I am at work and hence not able to do any turns.............sheesh !
Looking at a map my biggest worry is that i will not be able to do what I normally like to do and that it to pull out my P-40's from the PI to OZ.  I also think that time is going to be a factor in getting troops up to PM before the yellow peril makes his move.  I HATE loosing PM as it makes the fight-back just that much harder.

I assume thats taken from a website which translates content that you enter there....there is a lot of work left to be done by them

we had it about at day 2 or 3, cant remember but I would give money for his face just to see it when it happend We are now at May 42 and he owns Noumea (taken on turn 2 in 41) but Noumea is a smoking base as I kept 24 hours of bombing on a nice shedule. Defending this base cost him more ships (2 CA, about 20 transports).
the last sentence above is out of any usage at all.

Yep, everyone knows that Boise was re-fitted in a earlier patch to have photons and force fields. I hunt Boise down with baby KB everytime. I get her most of the time too. Forget about taking her on with surface ships. I hate that blasted ship.

hehe very true, Luskan is Boised poised becasue against me, he even lost 1 CA & 3 DD's and a 4th DD got away with damage. Of course, Boise was lost but in return of a CA and 3 DD's ...

Ok, I've done some turns tonight - WITP thirst temporarily satisfied.  Oliver and I started a game very early on - lots of bugs and changes and updates on that particular game!

Ok, so Raver sends another turn and a few things start to go right.

A few things don't also.

Operations in the Pacific have gone extremely well to date - this theatre is running like clockwork so far. I've taken Nauru, Wake, Admiralty Is, Wewak, a few little spots on nothern PNG, Lunga, Shortlands, and you can see I'm going to have the rest of the Solomons under control in short order - I've got garrisons and eng units working feverishly for when the marines show up. Wake and Marcus Island are operational airbases able to take down early allied CVs on approach without sweat (like Kwaj or Truk). Rabaul is weakening and I've got heavy assets arriving in the area to oversee operations.

I've got an extended target for Aspiration set in the Pacific - more to follow within a few turns on this.

Operations in the SRA
have gone well this turn - a whole bunch of bases fall - but Brunei, Kuching and Khota Bharu are still holding out (not for long, admittedly) but they're not coloured red yet! Good news is half my airbases are up and online - and they showed how potent they are this turn - nells out of bangkok blew Repulse to hell and gone (Raver is no fool - she was slowed by the original torp hit, so he dumped her and ran with PoW). Then with extra satisfaction, my nells out of Kendari sank Boise without sweat. I've got the PI covered with my airbases now - nothing will escape!

I've got enough troops ashore at Tarakan to start my Brunei offensive, and I've almost got my two large hammers complete at Aparri and Songkia - next turn will see my invasion armies ashore, supplied and marching towards their respective goals. I've got units at Legaspi rolling north towards Naga, and when Khota Bharu falls, my second wave will land there.

I lost another 2 DDs under the waves this turn, taking my total to 7. 4 sunk by Boise alone.

House Rules:
1. Jap player gets a free punch on turn 1 - complete surprise all throughout the theatre. Raver gets to move his CVs, order his Chinese armies around, that is it for turn 1. He gets to give orders turn 2.
2. I will not port attack anywhere except PH on turn 1. After that, if there is anybody dumb enough to be parked at Manila or Singapore, I'm squashing them. Don't care how realistic or not this might be.
3. No 4 engined bombers under 6000ft. Not that Raver ever does this anyway.
4. If I intend to attack Russia, i need to pre-activate them 2 weeks prior.
5. PDU is on, and we won't restrict it. Neither of us will abuse it to the point of being gamey, but is too useful to do without.

pretty light on for house rules? do you have an 'understanding' against 'gamey' play? Or is this just a free for all?

As a rule, I don't like house rules - it is a game after all, I'm not interested in repeating history (otherwise I wouldn't want to be the japs).  The only house rules we use are ones that balance gameplay mostly.  Gamey things tend to not be a: any fun or b: work (even though that is why most people try them).  Raver and I enjoy winning this game just as much as losing it (aside from the pain, tears and agony when things go wrong) - so there has never been any "gamey" play and never will.

I've seen a lot of other people's house rules . . . and I would be amazed if I saw anything as crazy as that out of Raver (the suicide transport that creates a hoarde of "behind the line" PT boats house rule horrified me - if you're doing that you really don't get this game - and won't get to play against good opponents for long!).

I keep my house rules the same (short and simple) every time I play and the rest is based on mutual understanding of what is "fair" or "feasible" - the trick is to find opponents that feel the same way.  When you look at the guys who've been around this game and UV for a while, they're wargamers - which means they won't be gamey even if you are etc.

Thanks Mark VII - I'll keep up the good work and Raver will keep . . . doing whatever it is Raver does.

Extremely long and involved turn, where lots goes right - it is only the 10th of December and I'm already impatient.  Things are a bit slower than usual, but I'm happy with the way things are going.  Raver's mass exodus from the PI has begun - he left it a turn too long - I was ready for him (even if my port attack at manila found nothing).
Khota Bharu falls and my second wave begins to disembark.

All of my subs have been surged from the PI and with luck they should catch some of the stray jap Aks and APs that are steaming around the place.   Looks like Misway is next on banana boy's target list and there is nothing that I can do about it yet.

The speed of the jap assualt has shaken the US command to it's very core, and as a result of this some old plans have been taken out the the bottom drawer and are being dusted off.   War Plan "Recover" is being looked upon as the most promissing.  But it will be at least 2 years before i will be ready to start this operation.

Operation "recover" eh? I guess I'll just stop looking at the combat replay and relax for the next two years then.

Another good turn as the wheels of war grind on Raver's forces - and mostly spare mine.

Operation Aspiration's extension was the invasion of Midway Island - fairly easy to do at this point in the game. KB might be standing guard over the invasion (or might not) but the South Seas detachment has stormed ashore, leading a wave of engineers, a base force and some soon to arrive CD units into what will be their new home for the next 4 years. FOW exagerated the number of casualties we took in the landing . . . but not by a lot.

I have under estimated the strength and tenacity of several of Raver's strongholds - namely Rabaul (will fall next turn) and Kuching (turn after). My landings have begun at Iliolo and Cebu, where US Filipino divisions still resist. They will soon be overwhelmed - I intend to leave no handy bases in range for the odd us sub to refuel at, or an airfield to be used as a stopover while Raver's planes flee Luzon. An air battle continues over Manila, where P-40s resist my zeros from Aparri - obviously I will have to do something about them as this turn they cost me a few planes (good thing the pilots are mostly ok).

In better news, Brunei falls into my hands intact - meaning I won't have to spend months repairing the oil base there. The troops now leave behind garrisons and base forces and are re-embarking for their next objectives further south.

Several more ships fleeing the SRA get attacked by my air forces - depressed to see how bad some of my float plane pilots are at bombing - but fortunately I've got several small units of Kates and large units of nells scattered around where they can do the most good. My air commander's target selections remain accurate.

In other news, I manage one last mid ocean intercept on the Houston (who damaged my DD Yukaze & CL Kinu just enough to set them on fire last turn) with a second BB TF (without undamaged escorts Fuso was forced to return to a nearby port to merge with a light surface combat tf before resuming operations). This time, there were no mistakes as Nagato and Yamashiro made certain Houston wouldn't need to be intercepted a third time.

Operation Deviation was brought to a close when Houston sank - not really what I'd call a success with 7 of my own destroyers on the bottom.

Operation Expectation has also come to a close as KB slips off the allied radar and into the night.

No point in beating about the bush - Raver is no idiot and he will watch the combat replay and realise there are two whole divisions missing from my usual PI lineup. Very soon he'll find out where they are.

In other news, Raver continues his nuisance attacks at Rahaeng, stealing the base with the Burma rifles. Hardly clever with the 55th (?) division about to obliterate them when they arrive. There is a fierce battle over the railway intersection near Haiphong, where Chinese units are condensing fairly cleverly. Fortunately I have them sandwiched between two of my divisions and will drive them back up the goats track they came out of. Things in China . . . well I've learnt from some of the best Jap players and their AARS. Go in screaming Banzai and you tend to kill a lot of Chinese troops but you get bogged down and exhausted fairly quickly. Far better to methodically, precisely roll up the yellow carpet and leave those units crippled and badly in need of supply - my operations in China will not include too many whirlwind advances - I will carefully outmanouvre Raver's slower chinese armies and crush them one by one. The trick is not to let them all escape intact.

Operation Ordination was a contingency plan put together by my staff several months back - I had hoped to tempt or force Raver to bring his CVs and his heavy units to the fray early. Several other AARs show a sure fire way to get the allied player to fight before they're ready - and so I gave Ordination the green light. It will take a little while to assembled the forces and assets required but soon enough Raver will spot it and have no choice but to react.

As the 12th of December draws to a close, i find myself benchmarking against our last game - by this time in our last game I had captured a lot more real estate on Luzon and on Malaya. However it cost me a lot more troops, and I bogged down with my overly speedy advance. This time, although Malaya and Luzon have both lost important flanking bases, my air power over them is supreme, and my invasion forces have landed unmolested, in good order and have even had a quick rest before beginning their journey towards the obvious objectives, Manila and Singapore. Slow and steady will win this race better than the cavalry charge will.

Gawd Luskan can rattle on.......pffftt       At this point I am rather pleased with the losses and also the damage that has been put on both IJN ships and also his merchant fleet ships as well.  And while I would perfer to see a LOT more on the bottom, damaging them is just as good if not better, as they will soon clog up his ports and ship yards.

Quieter turn - things a bit slower than I would prefer - but my plans are progressing well enough - although admittedly I am getting impatient (with better than average progress).  Some of Raver's fleet has escaped the SRA - but they won't get far.

Operation Ordination is taking too long.

Yes he did! It would also seem that two of his submarines are on the long dive to Davey Jones locker.

Two of my submarines are on their way back for repairs - high float damage but relatively low sys - they'll both make it.  At this rate I'll torpedo 1 DD for every 4 subs he smacks around Pearl - which clearly isn't worth it so I'm withdrawing them to less patrolled waters.

As for Midway, well as you will see from the combat report, I've performed a retrograde manouvre with the South Seas Detachment - they were all packed up and safe except for 1 pesky knocked out support unit that is demanding to fight to the death and just wouldn't get on the bloody transports - so we left them behind.  Invading Midway is just not plausible - sometimes you'll snatch it, sometimes you won't - but every time you invade Midway you get your APs (6 of them and 3 small escorts) smashed by the coastal defence battery.  Fortunately only one or two will sink - but still!

Midway was never about taking midway (otherwise I would have sent in the 3 naval gds units at Wake after them!) - it was about offering Raver's CVs a chance to come out and play.  He didn't accept the invitation - (Xargun did - and now Lady Lex is under the water ).  Now, consider what happens if Raver continues to not come out to play and I continue to pour troops into Midway.  Yes I'd take the place.

Then I'd have to supply it, througha  gauntlet of enemy surface combat tfs and subs and CV raids.  EVERY TIME KB gets spotted anywhere at all, Raver would whale on Midway like a cat to a scratching post.  Over and over - he might try to take it back but why bother until he wants it? This way, KB slips off into the night several turns ago - and Raver doesn't know where they are.  That, and the fact that His chance to hit my support tfs at Wake has passed - my ships are unloaded, the place is secure. The South Seas Detachment did not die of attrition

So in light of the last turn I feel I should offer a few bit of analysis of the first week or so of play.

First up, patches since I've been gone haven't been kind to the jap player.  That said, things are satisfactory - not good or bad just yet.

I underestimated the defenders at Kuching and Rabaul (and instead of spreading my effort out quite so far, I should have concentrated on these two better).  That said, both will fall soon enough - and I am avoiding repeating the mistake at Iliolo, Cebu, Ambiona, Makassar etc.  Midway was as difficult as expected, and I've saved 80% of the south seas Detachment.  These boys will sit somewhere relaxing for a bit before I send them off to their new post.

I am a little frustrated with how slowly my invasion fleets unloaded at Aparri and Songhia - these are giant steamrollers so I had to wait for them in their entirety (nothing worse than letting Raver bloody some of my units when the end is inevitable anyway etc.).  With a division firmly ashore at Khota Bharu, I'm going to cut Kuantan (being bombed daily) off and pinch it out first, and then I'll crush Singapore.

In the PI, my troops at Aparri (main force) have their flanks secure (my smaller force at Vigan) - previously I've bypassed Tuggeragao (sp?) only to have it bite me later.  This time, I'll crush the defenders there carefully, before hitting Clark.  That means accepting the irritating P-40s for the moment and going slow and steady.

To date I have lost 9 ships, worth about 75 points, with another 4-6 going to sink, another 6-12 crippled and another 6-12 damaged.  Most of those sunk are DDs, APs and 1 CL.  Raver has lost 3 bbs at pearl, Repulse, Houston, 3 AS, 2 AVD, 1 AV, and a whole bunch of other ships from Manila (which my two small CVE units are chasing).

I was not surprised when CL Adelaide appeared at Gili Gili - although I imaging Raver is sending her to port to change commanders! The troops did not land at Gili Gili and the transports (still ok to sail) have been directed elsewhere.  At least there is one target in the Solomons worth chasing - CA Australia should be making an appearance soon as well.  Rabaul . . . well I would prefer not to take Rabaul until Gasmata falls (so they surrender instead of live in the jungle for the next 6 years without food, water or ammo and pop up at the end to retake Rabaul with tanks etc). but I don't think I want to wait.  Why I would loose two whole CD units to attrition worries me - obvious a new rule here I don't understand.

That said, my armament industry has grown by about 50% (increased all the small armament factories to medium ones) - I'm not too worried about those units - in 6 or so months they'll get replaced without issue.  Economically, I've learnt a lot from some of the better Jap economists here on the forums - I can see my pools slowly stocking up and I'm pleased with the way things are working out.

It is very confusing -- what happened at Midway was entirely realistic, but I would guess that a bug in the code caused the problem at Rabaul. (Not uncommon to have bugs in freshly implemented code.)

Your Week 1 summary was insightful and much appreciated. Never mind Raver's complaints about verbosity, the rest of the audience welcomes it!

According to the history the bananna speaks NO truth...

Only lies, half-lies, quarter-lies, etc...

Where as Raver speaks nothing but the truth so help HIM God....
