Who is the toughest opponent(s) you've ever faced in WiTP PBEM?

For me, hands down, it is Jagdfluger. That guy is an unstoppable monster as a Japanese player. I've played a dozen different players now, but Jagdfluger is clearly and without question the best.

Xargun

hard to say but I have the most trouble in our game. this doesnt mean my other opponents ( Luskan, Rob, Feinder(out of order atm ), and a guy from germany (Ralf) are bad or in any other meanings not good, its just the edge where I think Xargun is even more evil then the others. Maybe I have just more luck against the Banana ? only time will tell !

I notice that a LOT of allied players just brute force their way into the jap territories.

I never had an allied (or even jappanese) opponent that actually used any other tactic than BRUTE FORCE against me...

So, I cant tell about my best opponent as I consider them al mediocer at best (no offense)...

Worsdmith (UV days) = Quit after I sunk 3 of his US CVs
denisonh = took over for wordsmith and fought me to a standstill, we quit to start WitP
Luskan = Started a fresh UV game and gave me quite a bit of trouble, but we quickly ended the game in favor of the newer WitP. He disappeared for some time only to reappear, happily, in the last week or so. Would definitely like another go...

WitP
Fdeutsch = Quit after a failed invasion of Russia
Chezdajez= Took over for Fdeutsch and did well
Nomad = Started a CHS test game and quit after a week or two of play after I sank one of his CVs enroute to Pearl citing gaminess

My toughest opponent mostly due to being the most long lived would have to be Denisonh. He took that game over from Wordsmith and with no US CVs gave me a real hard time in the Solomons and New Hebrides. I had already taken PM and was attempting to take Noumea. He fortified and using selective aggression began to win the war of attrition. Very savvy with Surface forces...I'd hate to see what he could do with CVs.

Would never hesitate starting up another game with him.

how else should an allied player play??

think you have to rate allied players how well they do in the defense of DEI

My toughest opponent has been Denisonh also. Beat me in 2 (or was it 3) UV games and 1 WitP game and is pounding me in a second WitP game.

Max Fusion is a close second so far. He antipated my every move so far. Maybe he'll turn out to be my toughest.

I played a ton of UV PBEMs and would say that only two players "mastered" me: PzB and Tom Mills beat me badly (They brutalized me). They are very, very good opponents. Challenge them at you own risk.

Amiral Laurent, The Elf and Crocky were also tough opponents who gave a good game.

As for WitP, I have not played many games. Only Sonny and Amiral Laurent. Amiral Laurent is dominating our stock game PBEM. He is very savvy, deliberate and doesn't make mistakes. A very tough opponent, just read his AARs.

And a note for you Sonny: If you were playing Amiral Laurent and not me, you would REALLY be hurting. I am adequate as the Japs where he is a master.

Tough opponents are good, but reliable opponents are valuable as well. Players who play rain or shine. Sonny is a player who consistently cranks out turns and never quits, so he gets an honorable mention. (Where's your turn..........)

Sorry. Past couple weeks have been overly busy (plus the games with my other opponents have been more fun than getting squashed by you).

My thougest opponent is also... Denisonh. Dating from our UV days, we have fought in Pacific and if he is not mastering the Japan side (thanks for the kind words), he is certainly mastering the Allied one.

I'd say General Hoepner (with Japan).
He must have OCD, never misses a beat

bbbf is proving VERY effective (we've been playing a couple of months only).
He inherited a (pretty much doomed) match in '43 as Japan in a very difficult position and he is doing wonders.
Sometimes he almost gets me worried
I'm not sure I'd like to face him starting from scratch

What else is war about? As an allied player I think, "the smartest thing for me to do would be to wait for overwhelming odds, but then where's the fun in that."

Actually Graycompany and I have had an excellent game of move-counter move going on. The patience required to play this game would drive most people on this board batty.

Well i think you only know the skill of a Player when he play's Allies or Late War Campaign as Jap's and he succedes in sucesfouly dalaying Allies from their gains... this is especialy valid for Stock A2A as the only thing that can happen to you when playing Jap is when you are dumb enough to split the KB or send's out the invasions without cover... till lets say last qarter of 1942 Japan can virtualy achive any goals when you use your KB in concentrated.

So basicly what Willie say's about Allies later in the game can be used to describe the Japs in the early stages of the war

Oh God I forgot about Tom sinker of the allied fleet Mills ---- he brutaliesd the USN in my game with him as well ......

All my opponents are good but Tom and Dennis slapped my navy around sinking Essex's with KB in late 43 - aggression is his middle name !!!

Hrm, tough question, lots of opponents over the years.

Raver's obviously a good opponent - airpower/Land combat are his strong points so best keep him fighting across long stretches of ocean.  The real danger with Raver is his in depth knowledge of my tactics - we know each other's "normal" moves so we're constantly frightened of beomcing predictable.

Doomed was good too (he's still around) he's going to play me (as the allies?) sometime when he gets a spare minute.

Theelf was a canny bastard - I always almost had him but he never quite got the beating I wanted to give (once I finish Raver off, theelf is also on the hitlist.).

Ollie and I are only into our first game, although he has managed to stay out of reach for 7 months (no major allied fleet units sunk in all that time and he still holds java).

Have only just started beating up on Xargun (as advertised, he doesn't have Raver's luck so things going well there).

Admiral Arctic was a nasty UV opponent - not sure if he made it to WITP but he showed me how to do mid ocean intercepts properly.

There was a guy with Ice in his nickname . . . (i'm having memory loss after years of booze use, misuse & re-use - all without ever having read the instructions) he was dangerous because he was the most absolutely fearless Jap UV player ever.  I beat him in the end, but sheer audacity kept him whaling on me for most of the game (yes, he chased and harassed me so badly - and night bombed Noumea so badly that I sent moderately damaged CVs back to pearl rather than keep them in theatre!

Crocky smashed me once and I clobbered him back in our 2nd UV game so we're about even . . .

Difficult to judge an opponent before you've finished a game or two with them!

Surprised no one has mentioned Mog - although i've never played him.

Of course, I am new to the scene but I can speak that both of my two current opponents are tough.

TKillerich is my Allied Player and he is extremely precise in his early defense.  He has made no major mistakes (two minor ones that cost him about ten destroyers), and he has ruthlessly made me pay for mine (a too-early invasion of Ambonia, failure to properly escort several convoys).  It is early February in my game and I am just now feeling like I am getting any sort of momentum.

Jwxspoon is absolutely killing me as my Jap player. I have lost 76 ships in the first week of combat including two carriers, two battleships, six cruisers.  The game is barely ten turns old and he has made me feel like an utter fool after every single one of them.  The problem is that every turn I have gone into with a reasoned expectation and afterwards, he manages to do 180 degrees the opposite.  1942 is going to be a brutal year of play for me.

It's really difficult to list out a single opponent!
I have held most of my opponents in high regards:

For UV:
Crocky fought a long and hard game after he took over from Nomad. Would like a rematch in WitP one day
Denisonh, I got this feeling that I got away extremely well from our carrier battles and that it would be more than difficult to repeat it.

For WitP:
Wobbly, for holding out through all the storm and rain of the early versions of WitP - including night port bombings, hopeless ground combat
in India and never ending frustration. Would love a rematch one day!
ADavidB was the perfect logistics wiz..
Nomad for taking over in a very difficult situation and bringing hope back to the Allied cause.
Andy Mac for turning the tables and taking on the might of the mighty Empire -  it's possible that he won't lay down and surrender before
we march into Washington DC

Also enjoyed an interesting games that was cut short with 2ACR, think it would have been a good one if not for Iraq, sometimes real war gets in the way!
My only current game as Allies against Mike Hall, a very determined and dangerous opponent. Darned impossible to play the same trick twice on
this one

Hi, Yes that true. Most die of boredom after a few months.
My major problem in claiming any kind of skill at WITP is I've only played Allies once or twice and as Japan I don't go for auto victory or expand beyond historic areas. I don't fight in China unless forced and many of my games have been of experimantal nature reather then bona fide attempts by myself to actually win the game.

I think as Japan I have the historic expansion period down pretty well. (no one has ever prevented me from going where I want) The defense of the empire is much harder then the expansion period regarding improving apon hisotirc results. The newer allied aircraft and growth of their forces makes it difficult to win protracted battles. All I can claim is no Allied player has succeeded in moving faster then historic rate with the exception of brady who managed to cut SRA from Home islands and invade Home Islands in late 1943.
That result was recorded in AAR. Most of my opponents do not write AAR and I have little time to maintain them myself.
