I continue to get strange combat results. One problem has been with Western Ally carrier planes which, although launched as part of a multiple plane attack against Japanese fleets and Japanese carrier planes, fail to take part in some, or all, of the air to air, or air to ship, combat expected (by me, anyway) of them. To give a classic example, I staged the following attack twice (by redoing that season's move) with different results as to the involvement of the WA carrier planes launched in the attack.

I launched 9 WA carrier air fleets against 4 Japanese carrier fleets, each with a carrier air fleet, and one Japanese supply fleet. Although in neither of the two overall attacks that I staged were any of the WA carrier air fleets destroyed in either air to air or ship to air combat, only some of the WA carrier air fleets took part in air to air and/or air to ship combat. In my first overall attack, one WA carrier air fleet didn't take part in any combat, and three undamaged WA carrier air fleets didn't take part in air to ship combat (even though two of those planes were subjected to ship to air combat). Then, when I reran the entire attack, four of the nine WA carrier air fleets didn't take part in any aspect of the battle.

Initially, I thought the answer to all of this might be that in AWD some of the attacking CAF's might "randomly" miss out on the attack, similar to the situation with ship to ship combat. When I went back to the rules, though, I saw that they stated that that aspect of combat was "unique" to ship to ship combat.

Am I (once again) missing something in the rules, or should all of the WA carrier air fleets taken part in both air to air and air to ship combat? Thanks, 32 shaw

It sounds to me like the following is happening.

3 of your CAG target the same Japanese CAG.
The first two fire and kill the Japanese CAG.
The third is left with nothing to fire at as its target is already destroyed.

As you have a large numerical superiority that sounds like the most likely explanation. In that case its working as intended.

Good thought, Jan, but I don't think that can be the answer. As I said earlier, the overall attack consisted of nine WA CAF's vs 4 Japanese carrier fleets, 4 Japanese CAF's and one Japanese supply fleet. From my experience with WAW, I would have expected the WA planes to be used in both air to air and air to ship until the opposing forces were destroyed. Yet, for example, the second time I staged the overall attack 2 Japanese CAF's were only damaged (via one WA air to air attack each) and one Japanese carrier, plus the supply fleet, weren't damaged at all. So what happened was that I had four WA CAF's doing absolutely nothing, even though there were still viable Japanese air and ship targets. By cross referencing the ID #'s of the 9 WA CAF's given in the combat results from the two times I staged the overall attack, I also noticed that three of the four WA CAF's that didn't participate in any combat in the second overall attack (i.e. weren't attacked either) had participated in at least one type of combat the first time I staged the overall attack. In the first overall attack, I also noticed that a WA CAF that was attacked by a Japanese CF in ship to air combat, didn't reciprocate by then attacking that Japanese CF (or any other enemy fleet), even though the WA CAF remained undamaged and the Japanese CF was never destroyed.

From your reply, am I correct in assumimg that all of the WA CAF's should have taken part in both air to air and air to ship combat until all enemy air and ship fleets were destroyed (with the obvious limitation of one air to air and one air to ship attack by each WA CAF)?

I'll continue to note what happens when I launch large multiple CAF attacks against air and fleet targets. Perhaps the game system just malfunctioned on the particular overall attack I've been describing. 32shaw

It stills sounds to me like it went as I described before.

9 WA CAG vs 4 Jap CAG.
WA1 targets Jap 1
WA2 targets Jap 2
WA3 targets Jap 3
WA4 targets Jap 4
Now all Jap units have been targeted once - from here on planes target randomly.
Lets say it went like this
WA5 targets Jap 1
WA6 targets Jap 1
WA7 targets Jap 2
WA8 targets Jap 1
WA9 targets Jap 1

Then the fighting starts.
WA1 damages Jap 1
WA2 damages Jap 2
WA3 damages Jap 3
WA4 damages Jap 4
WA5 destroys Jap 1
WA7 destroys Jap 2

WA6, WA8 and WA9 do not get to fire as their intended target is already gone.

Feel free to mail me the combat in question - preferably with a save just before and just after - and I will check to see if something like that happened.
