This is a scenario by Quinton Van Zyl using Database 2000. It is set at 5/4/92 with a start time of 00.00 hours. The scenario is set about a disputed zone between Chile and Peru. I chose to play as Peruvian side having read Ragnars AAR on Harpoon Headquarters! I figured this should be a relatively easy ride for me…….. The scenario was played through partly as a test of 3.7. At game start the disputed zone was shown, with a nearby Chilean airbase Iquique. Peru had Coracora airbase. At Coracora I had some useful forces. Two Canberra B.68 were available with a useful 1000lb bomb load. For Air patrols I had eight Mirage 2000 P with a Magic R550 load out. There were 4 Sukhoi-22M-2 Fitter J with a cluster bomb load. For maritime patrols I also had two F27-20ME Maritimes. Surface forces consisted of two separated patrol boats CM21 Velarde and CM23 De Los Heroes, plus a Task force of four ships. These consisted of FM 53 Montero and FM 51 Meliton Carvajal, plus CH 81 Almirante Grau and CH 84 Aguirre. All told I had some fairly well armed vessels and sufficient escort and recon aircraft to complete the job, at least that was my thinking at start. At start all ships headed towards the disputed zone on passive emcon. 00.0 Combat air patrols set up, one maritime launched for radar coverage. 00.21 Maritime crosses the coast and detects about seven unidentified surface contacts. Both Fitters launched for classification of these. 00.26 Air combats going badly, two Mirages lost to fighters before they got chance to classify as hostile. My rules of engagement were restrictive. 00.42 Three more surface contacts picked up by Maritime. 00.50 Minor success, one hostile Chilean aircraft downed, our first kill. 00.53 Second shot down, suddenly the air war doesn’t look so bleak. 00.56 One Mirage lost, probably to a Tiger II. Most contacts by now classed as neutral. 1.01 Second Mirage lost. 1.22 One Mirage lost in contact with an unidentified hostile Chilean aircraft, however this was destroyed also. 1.38 Air war going steadily worse, one Mirage lost for no return. 1.44 Fitters close to Bingo as they close on a four ship group near disputed zone. One classed as hostile being 14 Latorre. Two Fitters head towards the ship at low level. 1.45 All bombs dropped on Latorre which is classed as sinking. Nearby FM07 Lynch is spotted. The group is relatively close to Iquique (around 80NM). All Fitters RTB on low fuel. Two are promptly followed by at least one Tiger II and shot down. 2.09 Another Mirage lost for no return, to all intents and purposes the Air War is over. 3.54 The last Mirage is lost. 7.11 Change of plan required. Fitters are rearming but take a seriously long time. Maritime has contact with a four ship group thought to be potentially hostile. Nothing available to classify. Two Canberra launched to investigate…..somewhat wasteful. 7.54 Canberra’s identify all four as commercial fishing. 8.06 Canberra’s run into the area near the disputed area, locate and engage FM07 Lynch. 8.08 Depressingly no hits scored and both Canberra’s are shot down. 9.34 One Sea King launched from Task Force to get a better look at the disputed zone. 10.09 Maritime and Sea King have localised most Chilean ships but nothing is in range. 10.46 Two Exocet armed Sea King are launched. 10.52 CM 21 Velarde is hit by a Mirage 50FC attack and lost. 11.57 Sea Kings are in range, two Exocet fired at Lynch and two at Condell. Condell hit. Sea Kings RTB. 12.25 The last two Fitter’s finally available, take off and head to the disputed zone. 13.07 Both Fitter shot down by Tiger II, however they did identify FM06 Condell as sinking and ID Vidal Gomaz plus Cochrane. CM23 De Los Heroes is only 62 NM away, speed set to flank. 13.50 Never pays to count your chickens,CM23 is struck by an SSM and lost. 14.47 At long last, with a Maritime for radar coverage the main Task Force is in range. Four Otomat Mk 2 fired at FM07 Lynch. 14.59 Two hits register,Lynch classed as a probable kill. 15.00 Four further Otomat fired on Vidal Gomaz. 15.12 At least one hit detected, contact classed as probable kill. 15.13 Four more fired on Cochrane. 15.43 Victory Conditions trigger. This is a stylish, fast moving and tense scenario. Having seen the weaponry available on the Peruvian ships I hadn’t anticipated being in as much difficulty as I was. It would seem to be a good candidate for multi-player games. Some of the harder (though achievable) scenarios available for play have a nasty habit of being Quinton’s. There are a number available for testing on the Harpoon HQ Scenario Testing Ground plus of course the 1965-79 database and scenarios:- http://www.harpoonhq.com/harpoon3/scenarios_1960-79/
