This happened to me in COG also.

After clicking on a few units ( random number, or at least I have never found a way to instantly reproduce it) the game must stick on a container ( suspect army but not sure) , what happens is you lose the ability to scroll the map. Sometimes randomly you regain the scroll ( usually after going from one window to another) but generally once it stops scrolling it doesnt come back until you restart the game.

I cant send you a save of it, since it corrects itself as soon as you start again. Your stuck using the small map to move around once the scroll quits working. It also puts the little blurb from what ever province the container that caused it ( I think) is in, on all new screens in the middle. So if you get stuck from an army in Fredricksburg when you use the small map to go to say Cairo, the blurb about fredricksburg is right there in the middle of your screen.

Happens to me too.  Damn shame too, especially hearing that it happened in their old game.  Why wouldn't they have
fixed it unless they couldn't?

Wish I would have known about this before I bought it

It isn't just annoying, a stronger word is needed than that.  Or maybe a few four letter adjectives.

Also happened here. Came out, reloaded and it was fine...even after selecting an object/state/region.

But it did happen.

It is random and seems to happen to me eventually ever session. Sometimes quickly, sometimes not so quick. It is annoying. It isnt a game breaker, I played COG with that problem too. But if something can be done about it, I would be one happy camper.

I can't imagine this one wasn't reported by the beta team.....surely in ALL the games they played, one or two would have experienced it if a few of us are already experiencing on release.....as you say, no deal breaker...but still a little annoyance.

It is a shame and I feel a bit embarrassed reporting it, as there are so many indepth aspects to the game, as yet untouched by my hands, and all I can do is moan about something so trivial....

It's happened to me twice so far, and it's quite annoying. Yes, reloading fixes it, but it's still annoying.

As Gil said (in another thread) there was an issue at one point where this would happen when we would alt-tab out and come back in. Sub-windows were somehow getting stuck behind the main game window and it was waiting for someone to click "ok" or whatever on that invisible subwindow. I've never seen it happen when I wasn't alt-tabbing and recently it has been working for me when I was. *shrug* My best suggestion is to close any windows prior to hitting alt-tab while they investigate further. I (and other testers) might just have been subconsciously programmed to do that without really giving it much thought and therefore might have missed an instance of it somewhere.

Regarding the "hidden window" issue, I have always found that there is a minimization bar at the lower-left-hand corner of my screen whenever there is a control (a pop-up, or a window) that is waiting for an "OK" or to be closed.  It is usually a small, rectangular grey bar.  Double-clicking it will maximize the hidden window, and you can then close it as needed.

Unless this is some other issue...but it sounds like the same sort of thing I experienced.

I have never alt tabed out of the game, nor did I do so in COG , which had the same problem. I have never minimized a window in the game, so unless one is minimizing itself when I close it I dont see how this applies.

It doesnt happen after I have opened a window and closed ( in game) it happens after I have been looking through containers, thus why I said it appears to be a problem with a container not releaseing right.

There was only one tester who reported it a few times. I made some changes to the code and the problem seemed to be resolved. There may be something system specific about the problem -- many of the testers (and our staff as well) have never experienced it.

I'll try to find a way to reproduce it.

If it's any help, in my case it did seem to be a case of a selected unit that needed to be unselected. The unit may have been an enemy unit, because when I finally noticed it, there were brown arrows emanating from it. I right-clicked by it, and suddenly I could scroll the map again. Thereafter I was able to play for a couple hours with no scroll trouble. (shrug)

Gil said something about a window not closing at the bottom of the screen, but I couldn't find any minimized window on my interface.

I can assure you it isn't just a problem with alt tab.  I never did that.

I hope you can fix it, It makes the interface extremely clumsy to use.  For me it
doesn't just stop the scrolling, it also stops movement lines from showing up, a popup
help box is stuck on the screen, weird stuff like that.

I will have to try the reloading thing, I didn't know till now that would "fix" it.

edit: and if it helps, here's my system:

AMD 64 3500+
1 GB RAM
Nvidia 6800 GT 256MB
Soundblaster Live
Windows XP Home
Asus K8NE deluxe motherboard

Thanks,

Rocco

The workaround is to use the arrow keys. FWIW I prefer them to hitting the edges to scroll the map. The scrolling is smoother for me with the arrow keys. As mentioned in the other therad, I also have seen the problem.

Scrolling with the arrow keys isn't much of an option here.

If I hold down an arrow key, it will scroll just a little bit, then stop.  I continue holding down the arrow key
and when I let go I am suddenly at the other end of the map

Horrible is what this is for me. Sorry, I don't mean to sound bitchy but the game is REALLY hard to play this way.

Rocco

Rocco you'e right.

I just started a game to have a proper play around and the scrolling froze after my first right click on a unit

Wheel scrolling still works to go up and down but it is jerky. The mini-map still works to jump from spot to spot and the arrows are just too clumsy and jerky for me.

Eric, please fix this with a quick patch (and please get the missing special attribute files in the same zip)

I'm using Low Animations btw.

Adam.

ericbabe (feels kinda strange calling you that...I hardly know you! )

It doesn't seem worth your time trying to track it down unless someone can recreate it and give steps on what happened, as it's going to be like looking for a needle in a haystack of needles. On the other hand, you may stumble across it...

Bu as reported, it's very intermittent. It has happened to me twice in the four times I've loaded the game...and there doesn't seem to be anything "specific" I did in those two instances.

Probably the best thing to do is ask the users experiencing it (me included) to watch carefully what we do in a game and when it happens again, make sure WE KNOW what we did priior to it happening.

Just to clarify, though, there seems to be some sort of confusion. This issue (map not scrolling with the mouse) IS NOT RELATED to alt-tabbing...I, nor, it appears, the others who have suffered this issue have ALT-TABbed.

Ha! My name's kind of interesting. I'm told it's from the Ukrainian <Babich> which means something literally like "of the woman" (the <bab> is the same in <babushka>, "grandmother"), but colloquially it either means "mama's boy" or else "ladies' man." I suppose I prefer the latter meaning.

I definitely want to fix this. My guess about it being machine specific: it may be related to some Windows setting, since it seems to be that the Windows timer message is being shunted off somewhere it shouldn't be. Since the keyboard is still responding, I could do a stupid fix by having a key that just grabs the timer and directs it back to the right Window. The game timer is paused when users do certain things, and users are apparently able to do something that pauses the timer, and then either the timer isn't starting back up or else it's been redirected somewhere useless. Even if I can't nail down where the problem is at, I may be able to fix it anyway by adding some sort of verify timer code. The hard part is, since I don't know how to reproduce this yet, I won't really know whether a fix has worked or not.

The mouse is still reposonding too but only the wheel and the buttons to click various things.

Eric I know I'm letting my frustrations come out in my recent posts but I really thought this game would be solid seeing as it was building on the lessons from CoG.

I just don't know what I'm meant to make of it all?

Adam, the game was thoroughly tested, and by some damn good testers. But some things do not come up until there are many more people playing a game on many more machines, since some problems will only crop up on particular systems (or systems with particular settings). This almost certainly will prove to be an example of that (in which case another month or three of playtesting wouldn't have led to its discovery). And now that we know about it, we'll work to solve it.

Yeah I can vouch for that, we testers had the scroll problem at one point, myself included.  But then it got fixed in beta (or so we thought) and we never saw it again, so it looks fairly likely to be system related somehow.

I played for several hours tonight on two different machines with very different results. So maybe my observations will help:

1. I had numerous scroll freezes on my AMD machine but only one on my Intel machine. The AMD machine: AMD 64 4000+, 2GB RAM, ATI Radeon X1800 with latest Omega drivers, Windows XP Pro. Intel machine: 2.16 CoreDuo, 2GB RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with latest Omega drivers, Windows XP Pro. So the machines are essentially similar except for the CPU chipset.

2. The freezes on the AMD machine happened quickly (within 10 minutes) and under a variety of circumstances - so frequently that I could not detect a pattern.

3. The one freeze on my Intel machine occurred in a very specific and repeatable sequence: when trying to right-click a second container while the first container was still open. (Specifically, trying to move generals from James by right-clicking on the ANV without first closing the general container. When I reloaded and made sure to close the container first, everything worked fine.)

So, could the AMD processor somehow be the main problem? Perhaps it would help if folks with the problem posted their specs.

Great game by the way!

My system is:
AMD Athlon 64bit XP3200+
2GB DDR PC3200
nVidia Geforce 6600GT 128Mb

Haven't had the freezes as regular as you mention in your post, though, for Athlons. In fact, I played the tutorial last night for a fair few turns and didn't have a scroll issue once...must've been an hour or more

Nah, it's nothing to do with Intel vs AMD etc.

We have to go back to the first post here. A guy had it happen to him in CoG. So it's bad code.

No other game freezes up scrolling.

there does seem to be a pattern to some/most of these, for what ever reason, a info box (container) is not being closed before another one is being opened, as long as the first box is still opened, the map is not going to scroll

by doing what some have reported, I have also made the stop scrolling

the statement about the Alt Tabbing is being misunderstood, what is being said is that by alt tabbing while a box was open, we where haveing troubles, once we learned what was doing it, we were able to stop it

and in CoG it was still the same thing

looks like maybe the trick will be, to "force" a open box to close if another box is opened, this way the first box will always be closed

So progress is being made..., but we're going to have to live with this a bit longer? Good to know.
