That thread Mark VII is doing is really great. I think stories like that are very important. We are losing so many of those veterans every day. That oral history is important.

Along those same lines, MSNBC reported today that a WWI veteran died down here in Florida. He was 111. It went on to say that they now estimate fewer than 25 American veterans of WWI are still alive.

Back in about '76 (I was 11) my great-grandfather, out of the blue, unloaded some pretty graphic stories about France in '18 on me. He was a Guardsman with the "Etowah Rifles" from Gadsden, Alabama (he also served in New Mexico chasing after Pancho Villa in '16) in the Rainbow Div, the second American div Over There. Some of the things he told me have faded with time, but one thing I remember vividly was him telling me that they ALWAYS slept with their helmets over their faces to keep the rats' claws from scratching them as they scurried about. He showed me his bullet wounds in each thigh where he had been machine-gunned. My great-grandfather was 6'4" in 1918, a VERY tall man in those days, so where for another man the waist-high guns 'only' clipped him in the thighs, lucky for him, my grandmother, my mom, and I. Anyway, I was the first in my family to join the Navy instead of the Army for as far back as we can trace.
I think "Tay" might have had that in mind way back when....
He passed away a few months later.
